Common Herb Proves More Effective On Acne Than Popular Treatment

Thyme was significantly more effective than the highest prescribed concentration of benzoyl peroxide.

Acne is a four-letter word we learn to hate as teenagers; unfortunately, many of us carry that disdain into adulthood. Acne treatments can be harsh, drying and irritating, and often don’t live up to our expectations to eradicate embarrassing pimples and bumps.

However, Mother Nature has stepped up to the plate with a natural solution that seems poised to take the lead in combating Propionibacterium acnes (aka PA) — the bacteria primarily responsible for causing acne.

Researchers steeped thyme, marigold and myrrh in alcohol to extract the plant’s active compounds. They tested the resulting tinctures on the PA bacteria and found that all three herbs killed more of the bacteria than an alcohol control. But thyme — the star player — was the most effective of all. Thyme was also significantly more effective than the highest prescribed concentration of benzoyl peroxide.

The research was presented at a conference of the Society for General Microbiology in Dublin. As a conference presentation abstract, this research hasn’t been through the full peer-review process yet, as this usually takes place when research is published in journals after review for sense and validity by experts in the field.

ACNE IS A PART OF LIFE. AS AN ADOLESCENT AND TEENAGER I HAD ACNE AND UTILIZED Clearasil. BY THE TIME I WAS SIXTEEN, THE ACNE WAS GONE. ALTHOUGH I STILL HAVE “COMBINATION SKIN,” AS I GROW OLDER, IT BECOMES MORE MANAGEABLE.

PEOPLE NEED TO BE CAREFUL WHEN IT COMES TO UTILIZING MEDICATIONS FOR REMOVAL OF COSMETIC “HANG-UPS.” ONE OF THE MOST SILLY MEDICATIONS IS, Lamasil – FOR REMOVAL OF TOENAIL FUNGUS. WHO KNOWS WHAT TYPE OF FUTURE HARM IS BEING DONE TO YOUR BODY, SIMPLY BECAUSE YOU WANT “CLEAR” TOENAILS AND SMOOTH SKIN. TOENAIL FUNGUS AND ACNE ARE A PART OF LIFE.

What a sad comment by you on “fact of lifel”. Acne is not a fact of life, but by changing the diet, you can avoid acne. Stop using soap on the complexion, use a non-alcoholic toner/refreshner on a pure cotton ball on the complexion and finish with a non-greasy moisturizer. As a skin consultant, I can tell you this works. Cut out the fatty, fried and greasy foods and eat your veggies (just like Mom always said). Use a facial mask at least once a week for deep pore cleansing. As I have used this program for years with teenagers and adult teenagers, it works. Accepting defeat is not an option, but seeking a way to overcome definitely is. At 75, my skin looks decades younger so I know it works for we who are older as well. Been doing this since my teens too and it paid off.

      “carolinerh,”

I ASSUME YOU ARE FEMALE. UTILIZING SKIN-TONERS AND FACIAL MASKS ARE NOT REALISTIC FOR MALES. AS A SOUTHERNER, I LOVE PORK.

SOME FEMALES ARE MORE ATTRACTIVE WITHOUT COSMETICS. WE LIVE IN A “SUPERMODEL” CULTURE. A PERSON’S NATURAL ATTRACTIVENESS IS BEST. IF A PERSON HAS A SCAR, THAT IS A SIGN INDICATING THAT PERSON ENJOYS “ADVENTURE” IN LIFE. MY ONLY EXCEPTIONS ARE THOSE WITH GENETIC “BLEMISHES” AND THOSE INJURED VIA FIRE, ETC.

AS HUMANS, WE ARE ATTRACTIVE AS WE ARE – WE NEED NO MEDICAL ENHANCEMENTS.

I’m sorry that you had acne as a teenager but herbs do help for a lot of different issues. For instance, if you have acne scars you can use frankincense to to get rid of the scars or minimize them a lot. Thyme is amazing for acne and for many other issues as well, male or female. I made a tincture out of the frankincense for my grand daughter and she now swears by it. The thing we, in this society, seem to always lean toward is what the Doctor says or the commercial and we believe everything that is fed to us. However, How did people used to deal with issues before there was such a thing as a doctor or a commercial? We used what God provided, we ate differently and we lived differently than we do now. My theory on life, now at this stage of the game is, if God didn’t make it, I don’t eat it, use it on my skin or clean my house with it. We are trying really hard to stay away from all the chemicals that are being shoved into EVERY aspect of our lives. We wonder why there is so much cancer? That’s the biggest part of it.
        All the best to you.

        “Renee,”

MA’AM, I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH YOUR COMMENTS. BUT, HOW MANY MALES DO YOU THINK WOULD GO TO SUCH EXTREMES TO REMOVE SOME SCARS?

        • Renée

I think that if they are on the face, many of them would. I’m not a male and I don’t think like a male but there are a lot that make all their money with their looks. SO, with that, don’t you think that there would be many that would want to rid their faces of acne or poc marked scars? I’m just sayin,

      • CHRISTOPHER ALLEN HORTON

        “Renee,”

I UNDERSTAND. I AM FORTY-FIVE. I GUESS IT MUST BE A “YOUNG” THING, FOR MALES TO BE SO CONCERNED WITH THEIR PHYSICAL APPEARANCE. I AM AN OLD MAN.

        • Renée

Christopher, you are by no means an old man but yes, times have changed and there are many young men, as I’m sure you have noticed, wear as much make up as women now days.

couple of things that I have found that make me break out : chocolate and sodas (especially dark – maybe the caramel?).

If there is caramel in your chocolate it is a candy bar

Decrease intake in processed sugar and products with yeast and take 1 tablespoon of flaxseed oil with a dropper each of cinnamon bark and aromatic oregano oil per day per day to help control acne. It works!
