Coca-Cola Starts Ads Involving Obesity

ATLANTA (UPI) — Coca-Cola is rolling out two different ads addressing obesity, one for policymakers and one for the general public, company officials said.

“It’s the first time we’re really leaning into the conversation,” Diana Garza Ciarlante, a Coca-Cola spokeswoman, told Advertising Age. “We’re doing it in a way that’s anchored in what people expect of Coca-Cola. They expect us to be part of the dialogue, to lead where we can and to be responsive.”

A 2-minute ad, “Coming Together,” began airing Monday on national cable channels news channels such as CNN, Fox News Channel and MSNBC highlighting the company’s record of developing, distributing and marketing low- and no-calorie beverage options.

The spot, created by Brighthouse and Citizen2, communicates a “calories in, calories out” message.

“Beating obesity will take action by all of us, based on one simple common-sense fact: All calories count, no matter where they come from, including Coca-Cola and everything else with calories,” the ad says. “If you eat and drink more calories than you burn off, you’ll gain weight.”

The second ad, “Be OK,” is scheduled to broadcast Wednesday during “American Idol” on Fox and during the Super Bowl pre-game show.

Ciarlante said this ad is part of a global campaign that features a host of activities such as walking a dog or dancing that burn off the 140 calories in a regular can of Coke.

Some were skeptical about the ad campaigns because it might not escape the notice of the consumer that if taking a walk burns off the calories of a soda, taking a walk and drinking water might leave a consumer ahead of the game.

Jeff Cronin, a spokesman for the Center for Science in the Public Interest, said: “It’s not meant to be a meaningful contribution to addressing obesity.”

    If Coke puts aspartame in their diet products no one should drink it!!! And, if it is filled with high fructose corn syrup it Genetically Modified Organisms in it and no one should be drinking it!!! Also, the phosphorus in sodas eats the enamel off your teeth and no one should be drinking it!!!

    Well i will tell you this,i have been a coca cola drinker and collector since i was a father worked for coke and i even went so far as to paint my Harley Davidson fatboy in the coca cola scheme.i had it that way(varied)one way or the other since it was new in 93″,and was just a total fan!through the years coke has had its up and downs,but now i’m ashamed of them folding under to this new Obama and his henchmen white house.Obama’s wife went on a tangent to destroy America in her own way,and coke went along like a little puppy dog sniffing her butt!since they folded(like so many companies have)to the king and queens demands i have painted over the coke theme on my bike and sold off most of my collection and have not bought so much as a liter of the stuff!i still can not believe such an iconic American company went along with the pressure of this white house!and there have been many myth’s behind coke,i always stood up for coke and now i see they have totally lost the fight and will to live as an iconic American company,i am sorry to say……..(anyone want to buy whats left of my coke stuff?)

      I am with you. But I don’t want these liberal dictators (“Don’t drink Coke you’re a moron of you do!” – see above) thinking that it will be taking me away from soda. I’ve been drinking Coca-Cola since 1963. You would think that if it were that bad for you, I would be dead by now or some kind of 700 pound vegetable. People are stupid. They follow the leader more than they lead. When Coke went pro-gay, I was a little offended but tried to realize that they are a company who has endured over the years by staying afloat with current trends. If you don’t keep up, you fall back and Coke has stayed on top for over 100 years. Besides, their competitors *want* you to think like this…”I’m offended so I’m not going to buy Coke anymore!” If you’re loyal to a company or product, then you’re with it through good times and bad. I admit, I’m disappointed too, but once you realize that this company is always going to deliver to its consumers the goods we have always loved and enjoyed while, at the same time, making nice with the dictators in control and doing what is has to do to stay afloat in a world ready to eat up anyone or anything that it doesn’t agree with, then it isn’t difficult to stick by them. The alternative could be worse…remember Twinkies?

        coke is like any other company. they only care about the bottom line. since they don’t use sugar any more in soda, i have been discouraged enough not to buy it. although you can buy 12 ounce bottles at costco with sugar. alas! the real thing gone again. gatorade still uses sugar. thank god for that
