Choosing Dark Roast Coffee May Boost Antioxidant Intake

Choosing dark roast coffee may boost antioxidant intakeNext time the barista poses the question of light or dark roast, coffee-drinkers might be doing themselves a nutritional favor by going for the latter as it has been shown to contain more antioxidants.

Research conducted at the University of British Columbia has shown that the high temperatures at which beans are roasted to produce dark roast coffee are responsible for the beverage's antioxidant levels.

Coffee contains polyphenols which are antioxidants also found in red wine and certain teas. Antioxidants help eliminate harmful free radicals, substances which have been linked to cancer and other diseases.

Previous research from scientists at the University of Scranton has shown that coffee is a top source of the disease-fighting compounds. The study concluded that the beverage has higher levels of antioxidants than any other food or beverage, according to an article on

However, it should be noted that excessive levels of caffeine can put stress on the heart and lead to anxiety or hypertension. So, enjoy dark roast in moderation and try to include lots of fruits and vegetables to further boost antioxidant intake.

    Whole bean coffee is where it’s at, folks. I will nevr understand how or why anyone thinks that “hot and black” is the same as a cup of properly-made, whole bean coffee. Coffee made from grounds is no better than serving someone a picture of a fine meal (rather than the real thing). Blah!
    You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to make good coffee. As long as you have good water, whole bean coffee, a coffee grinder and a coffee-maker, you CAN make good coffee. Leave ground coffee for those who think a wonderful aroma and a full- flavored experience are ‘too much to expect’ in a coffee cup.
    DOWN with ground coffee! UP with whole bean coffee!
    NEVER settle for second best when you can have first-rate coffee! Get some STANDARDS into your life!

    Speaking as a Floridian, I can sure relate-there isn’t anything like a cup of good cafe con leche made with Cuban dark-roasted beans (I mean BLACK roasted)! It’s so strong it can’t be drunk straight unless you are really hard-core..lots of Cuban restaurants around here. Yum!

    I like Community coffee. It is made in Baton Rouge Louisiana in several blends including dark roast which is blacker than hades at midnight. Them Cajuns know something about coffee as well as good food.

      Independent, does your coffee have chicory in it? A brand that has been around for what seems like a long time [Chock Full O Nuts] has chicory in it, but I haven’t tried it as yet. I’m told that chicory can take the ‘rough’ edge off a cup of coffee, and improve the flavor at the same time.

        They make chicory coffee but I prefer the dark roast so it has been many years since I had any with chicory. If anyone is interested in the Community coffee and it is not available in your area you can order it online.
