Chicago City Council Approves Restrictive Gun Range Measure

July 11, 2011 by

Chicago is taking steps to loosen its gun laws. The Chicago City Council recently approved a measure that would allow gun ranges to operate in the Windy City.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who was previously President Barack Obama’s chief of staff, reportedly proposed the measure to allow gun ranges in areas zoned for manufacturing to avoid an unfavorable court decision, according to The Chicago Sun-Times.

The ordinance says that gun ranges could operate only with special permits that necessitate a public hearing and there would be a number of other restrictions as well.

Two lawsuits have been filed in Federal court contesting the city’s ban on gun ranges. City officials hope that the recently approved plan will put an end to those legal challenges. Also, a ruling against the city in either of those cases could result in much less rigid requirements for gun ranges in the city, reports the newspaper.

Walter Maksym, who is involved in a gun lawsuit against the city, said that the rules on gun ranges were a bit too restrictive.

“It’s a step in the right direction, a recognition that the original ordinance would not stand up to scrutiny, but it doesn’t go far enough,” he told The Chicago Tribune.

Call me crazy but we are talking about the Windy Crime City of this nation.
Perhaps PUBLIC gun ranges should be the streets where crime is out of control, but then again all offices of Government officials may also be a good start. Its really very hard to know who the players are when the city is founded on Crime and the acts of CRIMINALS.
So, do you start on the street level or just start at the top and then work your way down the list?

    • Warrior

Half the city is already an open gun range. Ya know what’s interesting is that all the alderman are allowed conceal/carry. Imagine that!

    • wandamurline

Friday, Minnesota Governor signed into law the right to carry a concealed weapon if they have been through gun training and have a permit to carry. Illinois (State of the Windy City) is the only state in the entire US that does not allow concealed weapon carrying. All 49 other states recognize the right to carry and have legislation in place for it. Now look at the crime rate of Illinois and tell me that it wouldn’t be to their benefit to allow good citizens to carry a gun.

      • Rick

I think you meant the Governor of Wisconsin. Thankfully, Minnesota signed the legislation years ago.

      • Billy C

New Jersey has concealed carry but only for judges and other elites!!!

        • Victor

New York City has conceal carry but it takes an act of God to get one; if you’re a regular citizen. Celebrities and such can get one in the matter of days.

      • 45caliber

No, it wouldn’t be to the benefit of the politicians there. It would be ONLY for the honest citizens.

After all, criminals don’t want to give their victims the right to shoot back.

  • s c

Way to go, Chicago. Way to go, Rahmbo! Now, I can go to my favorite shooting range and fire my favorite paintball gun in peace. Nobody messes with me and my paintball gun.
Just as soon as I get the rest of my brain put back into my head and I get discharged from the hospital, I’m going to find the miserable sob who shot me, and I’m going to paint that sucker from head to foot and use the sickest combination of colors anybody ever saw.
I got rights, and nobody gets away with depriving me of my right to protect myself and my family with my painball gun Nobody!

  • Greg

How are they going to get their guns to the range without harassment?

OK, So why is illinois restricting the RIGHTS of it’s citizens?

Do the people of this state believe that our RIGHTS come from the government and the government can take them on any whim?
Why are the people of this state not burning down these stupid oppressive rulings of a DICTATORSHIP?

Most of the politicians in town don’t want their criminal friends to be shot when they go about their “business”. And considering that most of the politicians started in that “business” they undoubtedly don’t want to risk being shot themselves.

  • Thinkbug

How simple can it be? Rahm Emanuel is for it; it must be bad for the human race! Defining the bad features is all that remains.

This reminds me of a ploy they(the authorities)use here in California. They call people(with warrants out for their arrest)up and tell them to come and pick up their lottery winnings at a certain place. When the person in question shows up they arrest them.If they want to know who all the gun owners are in Chi-town,they just invite them to”the range”.Complete with cameras, and a range marshall to arrest you for illegal posession.Hey…I’ll stupidly volunteer to be filmed on their”range”,and then they’ll know what kind of weapons I own. It’ll make it a whole lot easier to confiscate them if they know which ones I posess.Yeah…I’ll fall for it.-CC.

Now if Rahm Emanuel was a Repub and did what he did in Chicago everyone here would be chanting Rahm for Prez.If you have ever been to a firing range you will find all outstanding law abiding citizens and no sign of the criminal element.I think what he did was great for the people of Chicago and the people using these ranges are less likely to have accidental shootings making it safer for everyone. However the lunatic conspiracy theories will abound on this site and perhaps we should demand equal funding for these folks and have Rahm make a chicken coop for them.Look out the sky is falling!!

    • jibbs

You have that wrong, rahm would never be touted to run for president. You don’t know Chicagoans very well.

    • 45caliber

If he was Republican, he wouldn’t have put all the restrictions on the gun ranges.

Just another arrogant liberal who pretends to know what everyone would do…because “they’re all bad”. A graduate of the Hillary
School of (non) Thinking I suppose…

  • Victor

For the record, this is a non-event. It’s going to be so difficult to open a range in Chicago that no one will. Also, I’m betting that any range in the city will require the new CFP (Chicago Firearms Permit) – another document that’s so cumbersome and expensive to get, that not many people signed up for in the first place (they just kept their firearms unregistered).

A firing range in the city will not be profitable. There are alternatives in the close-in suburbs. I’m all for ranges in the city but it’ll be years before the first one even breaks ground.

    • jibbs

They all ready have several, they have been closed down for years, but they are still there. I know of two near O’hare airport.

      • 45caliber

Why use them when it’s free to shoot on the streets? Everyone else does …

  • C130 Gunship

$hitcago’s game plan is very simple. Continue to pass absurd laws and very restrictive regulations for the purposes of running interference until the other party (s) runs out of money and patience to get firing ranges within city limits. Even if the city continues to lose in court and eventually ‘gives in’ you can expect citizen harassment by the police, unlawful gun seizures, excessive regulatory inspections, and excessive permitting and fees to make it financially unsound to do business in the city.

So, if possible, move out of the city, taking your MONEY and guns with you and leave that cesspool to the crooked politicians, police, lawyers, judges, mafia and the flash mobs. It’s not like your vote even counts there. Eventually, as the taxpayers leave in larger numbers than ever, the ‘Cabrini Greening’ of the city will greatly expand and eventually result in “$hitcago’s chickens coming home to roost.”

    • 45caliber

When you have problems, I’ve always been of the school that says you should combine the problems into one spot – and then obliterate the spot. You sound as if you agree.

      • C130 Gunship

45 caliber….$hitcago is something like $108 BILLION dollars in debt for public pensions and other labor related obligations. There’s no way in hell it will ever get paid. Instead of the city actively seeking and encouraging new businesses to set up residence in the city, it chases out potential businesses and companies. $hitcago is a dying city, tax base wise, quality of the that tax base, moral, education, legal, and ethical decay thanks to the Democratic Party holding unshakable power for the last 40 or so years. It isn’t where you and I want to be when the SHTF right after the collapse of the economy there and when all those retired public employees don’t get their checks. This will result in the ultimate ‘flash mob.’ No city, state, or country can survive when there are no tax payers to pay the tax suckers. Most of us know what happens when the parasite (s) kills the host.

King Daily will undermine ANYTHING legal, to promote HIS dictatorship.

  • JC

Isn’t it funny how guns are evil and dangerous, yet when their life is threatened, the very first thing people will do is call someone with a gun to come and help them? Isn’t it funny how they will trust me to protect others when I am wearing a blue/black/green uniform, yet they will not trust me to protect myself and my loved ones when I am wearing blue jeans? Isn’t it funny how a foreign government will trust my training and better judgment to carry a firearm for personal protection when I am visiting, but my very own government will not? Well, I tell you what, it is not funny. It’s even pathetic. Being defenceless doesn’t make you safer. Never did, never will. EDITOR’S COMMENT: Once again, it’s people that kill people, not guns.

Pretty deceptive headline, it sounds like just the opposite in the article.
