Lifestyle and dietary changes, like regular consumption of cherries, may help manage the inflammation, stiffness and pain related to arthritis.
There is evidence that tart cherries may play a role in reducing the pain of arthritis, based on a review of studies published over the years in scientific publications such as Texas Reports on Biology and Medicine, Journal of Nutrition and Behavioral Brain Research.
Compounds called anthocyanins – which are responsible for cherries’ red color – are believed to promote this anti-inflammatory benefit.
Leslie Bonci, director of Sports Nutrition in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh, says her clients frequently ask about ways of managing arthritis without pharmacological drugs.
"For many arthritis sufferers, what they eat may help dramatically reduce their arthritis-related pain," she stresses.
That is why she suggests eating cherries as well as other red foods rich in anthocyanins and including omega-3 fatty acids in the diet.
In addition to that, the expert recommends staying properly hydrated and practicing gentle stretching that may increase comfort and lessen pain and stiffness.
