Cherries reduce inflammation, risk of heart disease

Cherries reduce inflammation and risk of heart diseaseConsuming just one and a half cups of tart cherries daily enhances the antioxidant activity in the body, according to new research.

The study, conducted by scientists from the University of Michigan and reported at the 2009 Experimental Biology meeting in New Orleans, included twelve healthy adults, aged 18 to 25 years, who were randomly assigned to eat either one and a half cups or three cups of frozen tart cherries.

The researchers found increased levels of five different anthocyanins, the natural antioxidants which give cherries their red color, for up to 12 hours after consumption.

"This study documents for the first time that the antioxidants in tart cherries do make it into the human bloodstream and is coupled with increased antioxidant activity that could have a positive impact," says Dr. Sara L. Warber, co-director of University of Michigan Integrative Medicine and principal investigator of the study.

"[What's] really great is that a reasonable amount of cherries could potentially deliver benefits, like reducing risk factors for heart disease and inflammation," she adds.

Previous studies have linked cherries and cherry compounds to lower blood cholesterol and triglycerides levels.

Other benefits of cherries include a 14 percent lower body weight and less belly fat, the type linked to increased heart disease risk and type 2 diabetes, according to the UM researchers.

    I have ordered—and consumed—tart cherries and cherry juice in the past, as I truly believe what is being said regarding their healthful and restorative benefits. But I am retired, have minimal income, and simply can’t afford them. Ditto, blueberries. What’s a body to do?

        John, Swanson supplements are quality products and the prices are definitely the best — whether you buy the Swanson Brand or other brands available. I started ordering my supplements sometime ago and also the CQ-10 made w/Kaneka Ubiquinol is excellent and costs less than half what I was having to pay in a discount vitamin store.

          One more comment, if you have arthritis and that is inflammation caused — I saw a tip on Dr. Oz show that I think truly works and the Oz show said it does. You simply take 1 garlic clove with a teaspoon of natural honey, and chase it with milk and tablespoon of tumeric! The woman that shared the natural formula called it “the potion for motion!” Maybe if you go online to Dr Oz you can find the information still there. I think it works wonders — what I thought was indigestion–a painful problem when swallowing food went away after a week of using the formula plus I really feel the difference! Yes, at first it is tough to get use to it — but how inexpensive can you get — and it is better than anything I ever tried — even the tartt cherry pills. Of course I buy huge jars of the tartt cherries and I eat a 1/2 cup a day — The best of all the remedy learned by watching Dr Oz!

    John Palo, I take one of these tart cherry pills each day. Do you do the same? Do you think 2 would be better?
    What’s your take on this?

    BTW, tart cherries are very tart. One really cannot eat a cup and a half a day.
