Caution Greets Suu Kyi Visit With Leader

NAYPYITAW, Myanmar, Aug. 19 (UPI) — The first post-detention meeting between opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi and the president of Myanmar was a good step but a slow one, an activist said.

Suu Kyi met with Myanmar President Thein Sein for the first time since the opposition leader was released from house arrest last year.

The government conducted its first general elections in decades last year, saying it was a step toward civilian rule in the country.

The international community expressed skepticism over the elections but Aung Zaw, a government critic and exiled editor of the Irrawaddy magazine, told the Financial Times the meeting between Suu Kyi and Sein suggested “things are moving in a very interesting direction.”

The government announced it was granting a visa to U.N. human rights officials to visit the country and U.S. State Department officials said the recently allowed political travel for Suu Kyi was a good step for Myanmar.

Despite the political maneuvering, however, Aung Zaw said it was premature to wipe the slate clean in Myanmar.

“It is a very good sign but we have to wait and see if this was substantial meeting. There are people who think this is a (public relations) ploy,” he was quoted as saying from Thailand.
