On Wednesday, President Barack Obama gave his first press conference since March, speaking from the East Room of the White House. Lasting just over an hour, the press conference’s question-and-answer session covered a wide range of topics, but seemed to focus on criticizing Congress. Senate Minority Whip Says Treasury May Extend Aug. 2 Deadline

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said the Federal Government could, through various accounting maneuvers, avoid going into default after the United States breached its current debt limit of $14.3 trillion in May. However, he said the accounting hoodoo could work only until Aug. 2 at the latest, and he urged lawmakers to vote to extend the debt limit as soon as possible.

U.S. Court of Appeals Upholds Individual Mandate

On Wednesday, the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the Affordable Care Act’s mandate that nearly all individuals must buy health insurance. The three-Judge panel, which included two Republican nominees, ruled 2-1 in favor of the law’s Constitutionality.
