Representative Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) narrowly beat out her fellow Congressman, Representative Ron Paul (R-Texas), in the Ames Straw Poll on Saturday with 4,823 votes, or 28.6 percent. Her win cements her lead in Iowa, an early primary State.
In picking the last three members of the new super committee on deficit reduction, Nancy Pelosi said: “We must achieve a grand bargain that reduces the deficit by addressing our entire budget, while strengthening Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.” What, exactly, does she mean by a “grand bargain?” Clearly, it’s code for Republicans caving in again and doing what Democrats want them to do: increase the deficit even more.
Former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty announced Sunday that he is no longer seeking the Republican nomination in the 2012 Presidential race. After finishing a distant third in the Ames Straw Poll, well behind Representatives Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) and Ron Paul (R-Texas), Pawlenty said his “message didn’t get the kind of traction or lift that we needed and hoped for” going into the poll.
On Thursday, Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART), a San Francisco-area transit agency, cut off cellphone service for that city’s Civic Center Station, citing public safety concerns over a rumored protest being planned for the station via social media. The agency has come under fire from the hacktivist group Anonymous, which has called BART’s actions “censorship” — the group reportedly attacked BART’s website on Sunday and organized another protest for Monday.
The United States Department of Agriculture knew a dangerous form of salmonella was present at a Cargill, Inc. turkey plant but did not inform the company until after one person died and 77 others were sickened by the bacteria. Cargill and the USDA announced the recall of ground turkey from the Cargill plant in Springdale, Ark., on Aug. 3. It was the third-largest meat recall in history and involved 36 million pounds of ground turkey.
At a press briefing on Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said that extending unemployment insurance would create jobs, by directly infusing money into the economy. This is not the first time that the White House has argued that extending unemployment benefits will create jobs.
Representative Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) expressed his desire to get rid of the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) during a recent radio interview. Gardner noted that the government agency was too large and the functions that it supposedly handled were things that could be dealt with on a State level.
