2nd Amendment Under Fire
The Senate Judiciary Committee spent Thursday considering four new gun control proposals initiated in response to mass shootings during the past year.
The three-member, bipartisan County Commission of Susquehanna County, Pa., passed a resolution last week to send a message that any potential Federal gun bans or restrictions being pushed by the Administration of President Barack Obama won’t be taken as law in their county.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has ramped up the anti-gun part of his super PAC’s message with a warning to the National Rifle Association that it won’t win a spending contest when the 2014 congressional and gubernatorial election season heats up.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo isn’t intent on letting the NY SAFE Act, his State’s extremely restrictive and reactionary new gun law, hamstring police and the film industry from access to weapons that are now illegal for residents.
The mayor of an Alabama city has proposed a disaster emergency ordinance that would give police the authority to confiscate weapons in the event of a major disaster. Guntersville Mayor Leigh Dollar says the ordinance would ensure a quick response in the event of a major disaster.
If the Presidential Administration’s goal is to ban certain firearms incrementally without making obvious that the elimination of all 2nd Amendment rights is the endgame, a recently leaked Justice Department memo is damning in its honesty. In a nutshell, the tone is this: “Well, we could actually cut the number of gun murders by simply enforcing existing gun laws, but if you guys want to ban them, here’s how.”
Reportedly, a bipartisan group of four Senators is just a few dotted Is and crossed Ts from crafting legislation that would bar private sales of firearms without restrictions, including a background check and extensive transaction records.
The full text of the 2nd Amendment reads: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” If only our current politicians could operate in such a straightforward manner.
The mindless trudge toward neutering the Wild West — and the rest of the Nation with it — slogs on this month in Colorado.
Gun grabbers love to denigrate 2nd Amendment supporters by claiming their fear that registration leads to confiscation is hyperbole or simple nuttery. And then there is Washington Senate Bill 5737, an “assault weapons” ban introduced last week.
