Cantor To Reposition GOP Beyond Debt Talk

Cantor To Reposition GOP Beyond Debt Talk
UPI FILE
House Majority Leader Eric Cantor wants the Republican Party to shift its focus.

WASHINGTON (UPI) — House Majority Leader Eric Cantor will urge Republicans to stop fussing about Federal spending cuts and start talking about helping U.S. families, an aide says.

The change to a softer tack, following big GOP election losses in November, is to begin today in a policy speech the Virginia Republican is to make to the conservative think tank American Enterprise Institute, the aide told The Wall Street Journal.

Cantor plans to tell the 75-year-old, limited-government group about a range of areas where the Federal government can help Americans, the aide said.

These range from education to medical research to job training, as well as an overhaul of the tax code, and would be framed in a way to show how Republican ideas can benefit families across the Nation, the aide told the newspaper.

He plans to point to existing and new GOP policies Republicans can use to argue their ideas are better than those of the Democrats, the aide said.

Some of the points are expected to include private-school vouchers for underprivileged children, healthcare options beyond President Barack Obama’s healthcare reform, workforce training initiatives, and a new push for science, technology and engineering visas for would-be immigrants, The New York Times said.

The speech’s theme will be that deficit-reduction talk should be complemented with ways the party can make government work better, the aide told The Journal.

Public opinion polls generally suggest Americans blame Republicans for the fiscal crises that have consumed Washington the past two years.

The speech would, in effect, be an acknowledgment the GOP must change its messaging and its actions, The Journal said.

Republicans significantly trail Democrats in appealing to women, young people and minorities.

      Of course he is.
What is it with these pathological altruists always running for seats of power over people?Who asks them to “help” anyone or do they have to force “help”?

      • old hillbilly

Right on! VOTE HIM OUT – use facts.

Here’s one – We have 20 million citizens out of work. Canter wants to recruit “high tech” aliens – put them through our schools? – put them on a fast track? Upgrade the genetic pool with “influential aliens? – sounds like Hitler repopulating his newly acquired countries!

The real problem is productive jobs – making things like we once did – investing in our country instead of China. We have engineers & many highly intelligent citizens selling used cars, working part time in walmart, or sitting home wishing they could feed their family! Stop allowing aliens to work here until unemployment is virtually zero. Save half a trillion a year & generate a windfall of new tax revenue that will make defecit spending a thinmg of the past

We import 2/3 of our crude – 100%+ US energy independence would employ millions in good jobs and reduce the cost of energy to a fraction of the current global monopoly prices. Again, hundreds of billions of revenue and wages here instead of disappearing into monopolist and terrorist hands.

Restart the steel mills, ore mining, & manufacturing – turn Detroit into a boom town of productivity instead of a refugee feed lot where residents have zero hope for independence and the American dream of something better!

Write articles or opinions in local & regional papers, mafgazines, etc. Make a difference!

Cantor is my RINO rep in my district. No one in my district likes him, but they always vote for him. Go figure.

  • Butch

Trying to act like Democrats won’t change anything. Actually downsizing the federal govt like you claim you want to do, would be a start. Ending all the illegal endless useless wars would be another start. Repealing all the oppressive laws and Executive Orders might make Americans feel like their nation does in fact care about them. This will never happen tho. The laziness and lack of diligence by the American people has ensured that this genie will never be put back in the bottle. Neither hopelessly corrupt party wants to do the right thing.

REPUBLICANS SHOULD HAVE DONE THEIR JOBS ,A LONG TIME AGO ,BY STOPPING FUNDING FOR OBAMAS AGENDA , AND THEY DID NOT HAVE THE COURAGE TO DO IT .WE HAVE BEEN LIVING IN HELL FOR 5 YEARS.

      • Chester

Irene, from just this one comment, it is easy to see that you have been living in a hell of your own making for most of your life. If you don’t like what you see going on, why have you done nothing other than complain about it? You might consider starting at the local level and getting involved in politics in your ward or district. Those who seriously WANT change need to start small and work their way up to a level where they can actually accomplish something.

      • old hillbilly

You’re on target! Chester may mean well, & local party involvement helps; but the establishment is the problem and it’s in control!

Write your opinions in the local and regional papers REGULARLY! My state has 2 progressive republican senators & they need to go! They vote for debt limit increases & lots more! One is up for election (very likeable person, but worthless) & there is a strong movement to remove him in the primary. The establishment is already throwing away money to save him. Don’t hate him, but will vote against him next time – democrat or independent if necessary. Rubio is in that same category – can’t vote for him, & would vote against him if I could to get him out!

      Good comments, Butch
We know what will cure our ills: a flat tax rate of 15% or less, cut the public sector by 50% and get the govt out of the marketplace. That would create a booming economy where the only complaint would be that there are not enough employees to fill all of the jobs offered.

But, you are right, that will not happen. Our future is a sluggish economy with very little opportunity, and a bunch of people whining, complaining, pointing fingers and saying “give me more”

  • Dr Richard Wright Hogeland

Either basic principles are right and in fact the truth that gives long term results or they are not
Pragmatism of basic principles is the total destruction of proper and correct principles
The basic virtues and deadly sins are as valid today as they were 100s of years ago –
They mustg be voluntary – they must be practiced rationally – they have nothing to do with others only ourselves –
If the Republicans are goung to continue to be – “a me too” party then all is lost
If they believe in Freedom and Liberty – all else fglows from ther greatest of all Maxim Freedom and Liberty – once it is in place all other morals and ethics are put in the proper place
Give away projects – will always be attractive to the have nots – any program favouring the have nots in the long term will not be sustainable -
As a starting point – taxing the worker to sustain . the non worker – will buy votes for the politician that espouses such a robbery – but in the long term – it is not sustainable and a bankrupt exercise -

    Dr Richard Wright-Hogeland

I’ll put it in simpler terms, you feed a stray kitty you will always be feeding the kitty.

      • Chester

One little thing everyone seems to forget. If you feed that stray kitty, soon you have no mice to worry about, and few other pests as well. Cats, like a lot of the “have-nots” live in a more or less symbiotic relationship with the rest of us. We give a little, but get as much, if not more in return.

  • Pris

Why don’t we just quit and let the Dems own the destruction of America?! The so called leaders of the GOP are only interested in keeping their station in life. The people in my district can do math and they are angry at the cowards that can’t stand up for Conservative principles. Dont look for their votes!

  • Al

How about instead of trying to win elections with [expletive deleted] promises you actually DO SOMETHING .The Democraps and Repugnacants are the same its all about power not people. how about applying what Newt said when talking about unemployment benefits “We should’nt pay somebody for doing nothing” and we definitely should not re elect them.

  • DAK

Perhaps if the GOP had tried governing instead of looking out for themselves back in 2008, things might of been different. Instead they focused on all the “You can’t do…” other than attempting to work for the betterment of the country. Now they are just pandering and tying themselves in knots trying to paint everything bad as someone else’s fault while they are pure as the driven snow. Republican’s number one rule is to always lay blame somewhere else and NEVER admit YOU made a mistake or had anything to do with the problem.

    • Ibn Insha

If governing is the criteria to win an election then why did the Democrats win? They are number one to look for their own interest at the expense of others and blame the GOP for all ills. With each passing day GOP is becoming more like the Democrats. Democrats were able to win last election because they promised people more than the GOP did. Simple.

  • Ibn Insha

Whenever a politician makes a move it cost me money. It is always about spending some more. GOP is so desperate to win an election, instead of being on the right side of history, they are looking more and more like Democrats.

  • http://yahoo.com Mary

Nobody listens anymore, best bet don’t VOTE!

  • Terry Bateman

I have a better agenda for republicans to run on that can’t lose:

    1. The Second Amendment Act of 2016: The right of U.S.citizens to keep, bear, and
carry firearms can’t be infringed upon by any local, state, municipal, or federal
    government.
    2. Murder and armed rape are capital federal felonies in all 50 states and U.S.
    territories.
    3. Repeal the Patriot Act.
    4. Repeal the Defense Authorization Act.
    5. Repeal ObamaCare.
    6. Tax Reform Act of 2016: Flat minimum tax rate of 20% for all individual income from
$1 up, corporate, farm, gifts. estate, dividends, capital gains. No credits, exemptions,
deductions, exclusions. All income subject to social security/medicare witholding taxes.

If the Republican Party runs another democrat for President like Mitt Romney in 2016,
I will vote for the Democratic candidate just for the hell of it.
