Can Garlic Kill Foodborne Illness?

New research shows a compound derived from garlic kills foodborne illness.

Researchers at Washington State University found that a compound in garlic is 100 times more effective at battling intestinal illnesses than two commonly prescribed antibiotics.

In research published in the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, scientists looked at the ability of the garlic-derived compound, diallyl sulfide, to kill the Campylobacter bacterium when it is protected by a slimy biofilm that makes it resistant to antibiotics. Campylobacter bacterium is responsible for a number of intestinal illnesses. They found the compound can easily penetrate the protective biofilm and kill bacterial cells.

“Campylobacter is simply the most common bacterial cause of food-borne illness in the United States and probably the world,” said Michael Konkel, a co-author of the research.

About 2.4 million Americans are affected by the bacteria every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with symptoms including diarrhea, cramping, abdominal pain and fever. The bacteria are also responsible for triggering nearly one-third of the cases of a rare paralyzing disorder known as Guillain-Barré syndrome.

While the researchers do not know if garlic alone can fight food poisoning, co-author Barbara Rasco said: “Diallyl sulfide could make many foods safer to eat. It can be used to clean food preparation surfaces and as a preservative in packaged foods like potato and pasta salads, coleslaw and deli meats.”

    The antibiotic properties of garlic and onions have been known for quite some time.

    One of the best natural supplements known to kill all sorts of bacteria and viruses is oil of oregano. 2-3 drops under the tongue once a day, especially after a meal, will kill e coli and a host of other germs.

  • Sirian

    Natural protections provided by nature – will the pharmaceutical companies welcome this? Perhaps so. Then again, it could become another lovely little niche for them to exploit to the hilt. Who knows, they may have funded the research from the git-go.

      Big pharma and the FDA would most likely try to stop any natural remedies. Here’s just one of the current battles;

      Jim Humble’s (the founder of MMS) MMS Newsletter to you as it is very Urgent that you read, as the fate of MMS and the availability of it is in our hands. The FDA is determined to call it a drug and have it completely in their hands and Getapo control. This court case is also a precedent towards future activities of the FDA to prevent, stop, and suppress virtually any natural cure and health benefit that will come our way.

        Not so easy to discern what MMS even is. Google shows number of things called MMS, except for the “ads” which I avoid. Perhaps you should explain a little. Be sure folks aren’t confusing it with MSM.

      • Cribster

        You’re right Doctor Mom, I was in a hurry.

        This should explain it further;

      Sirian -
      Don’t count on the FDA, most of the traditional medics or Big Pharma to contribute to research on anything natural unless their goal is to get it off the market, suppress it or slander it as if it were an illegal substance. There is so much known about health matters (regarding drugs, chemistry, radiology, etc. of “acceptable” “medical science”) and how the body works that there is NO reason for people to get sick. I’m 67 and I quit getting sick 23 years ago ’cause I looked around and could see what medicine had in mind for me. I decided not to participate.
      The way traditional medicine does their diagnoses, tests, procedures (basically the whole “health” paradigm) in perpetrating “medical science” on its patients is the reason we have the current health crisis AND why it is so hugely, incredibly expensive (thus requiring “doctor payment” insurance). They, via Washington beauracracies, propaganda and crony subsidizations, are able keep you paying for the monopoly they own and maintain – to your detriment.
      I suggest building a library and learning everything you can about locally available simple healthful services, products, wild foods, herbs and how to use them. Do it before ObamaCare gets going.
      At some point it will eat itself up and implode. When it does it’ll be everyman for himself.

        Oh, and learn everything you can about how the 9 spiritual abilities listed in I Corinthians 12: 7-11. These were just as much a part of the gospel as “Jesus Christ raised from the dead, confess him as lord.”
        Paul taught believers to use these eveywhere he went (I Cor. 4:17). The believers in I Thessalonians 1: 2-6 learned from Paul how to use these things for their own and others’ benefit and “became followers ((Grk,: “mimetes” – imitators, mimics) of us (the Apostles) and of the Lord”. That’s pretty good company. These folks were not church big-wigs or elders who were operating this power Paul talks about – just ordinary folks. They were having fun with it. It says they had Joy of Holy Spirit, so it wasn’t some sort of drudgery.
        In Romans 15:17-20 Paul says these signs and mighty miracles were the norm and part of the gospel. Also in II Cor. 1: 13,14 Paul brings up “…for we write unto you none other things unto you than what you read or acknowledge” (that would be I Corinthians, including chapters 12-14) and finishes the sentence encouraging them to “acknowledge these things unto (“until”- time involved) the end”.
        What end?
        Verse :14 – “in the day of the Lord Jesus.” That’s when these powerful spiritual abilities go away – to be replaced by something better.
        This more than anything else is what this country needs – especially at this time. The Devil and the liberals are scared to death of these powerful manifestations of God’s power and gracious glory.
        Get on it!

    my family has used garlic for years alone with white vinegar. we have used antibiotics to much .

    When man starts extracting the “active” compounds from natural products, they are messing with things they do not really understand. Garlic (and other natural products) work as a composite whole. There are components of the garlic which protect the user from side effects and keep the “bugs” from becoming resistant. When you start separating out the components and focusing on one, you risk side effects and resistance. I do not find this “study” to be good news as it is just an excuse for the manufacturers of the food products to be sloppy.

      FF,
      Try roasting garlic with some white wine, Clip off the top and open the ears – then make a paste out of it and use it like butter, You will never go back to butter, or you can also mix it in with butter and green onions or even add hot peppers as well.

      Peace and Love
