Campaign Seeks To Make Paris Friendly To Tourists

PARIS, (UPI) —  Tourism officials in Paris are distributing a training manual designed to help the city’s residents be more welcoming toward tourists.

The “Do you speak tourist?” manuals, authored by the Paris Chamber of Commerce and the regional tourism committee, were published Tuesday and are being distributed to 30,000 workers in tourism-related industries including restaurant owners and shopkeepers, The Local.fr reported Friday.

“The aim of this campaign is to focus on the quality of welcome that visitors receive in Paris, and to train professionals here to understand the differences between them,” said Francois Naverro of the regional tourism committee.

The campaign’s website tells workers how to serve tourists of different nationalities, noting the British expect “smiling, friendly staff, a warm welcome and a playful dimension to cultural attractions.” The website said U.S. tourists expect “to be taken care of quickly, and a mastery of English.”
