California Dog, Missing For Three Years, Turns Up In Florida

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (UPI) — A California man whose dog disappeared three years ago said he was overjoyed to learn the canine had turned up in Florida.

Eric Hough, 30, a professional BMX rider who lives in Huntington Beach, said his pit bull, Bayou, disappeared when he and three roommates asked another person to move out of the Los Angeles home they shared at the time, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday.

Hough said he contacted police and confronted his ex-roommate but was unable to prove she took the dog and there was no sign of Bayou until late last month, when he learned the dog had been brought to a Brevard County, Fla., shelter as a stray June 5.

Tracey Breen, the rescue coordinator for Brevard Animal Services, said a microchip implanted under the dog’s skin bore Hough’s name, but two phone numbers included in the information did not connect.

Ryan Gamache, a self-described “pet detective” who volunteers with the non-profit Missing Pet Partnership, took up the case and was able to contact Hough through Facebook.

“I thought I’d try it out,” Gamache said. “I love these impossible cases, so I spent a lot of time, a lot of emails, a lot of phone calls, trying to track down this person.”

Bayou is being returned to Hough thanks to the non-profit Kindred Hearts.

“Now that he’s been located, I can’t lose him again,” Hough said.
