Calcium And Vitamin D May Help Prevent Bone Fractures

January 28, 2010 by

Calcium and vitamin D may help prevent bone fracturesAccording to a recent study, taking vitamin D and calcium on a daily basis can help reduce the risk of bone fractures.

Researchers at Copenhagen University in Denmark found that taking the nutrients together decreased participants’ isolated hip fracture risk by 16 percent and their overall fracture risk by 8 percent. However, the study also discovered that when the vitamin was taken by itself, no significant protection was offered.

"This study supports a growing consensus that combined calcium and vitamin D is more effective than vitamin D alone in reducing a variety of fractures," said lead researcher John Robbins.

"Interestingly, this combination of supplements benefits both women and men of all ages, which is not something we fully expected to find," he added.

Experts recommend a dose of 10 mcg of vitamin D and 1,000 mg of calcium on a daily basis, according to Med Page Today. For high-risk patients, the nutrients should be supplemented by bisphosphonates or other antiosteoporotic drugs.

Bone fractures are a significant cause of disability in older people. Nearly 40 percent of women over the age of 50 will experience a fracture of the hip, spine or wrist in their lifetime.

Actually, I work in the medical industry and if you are taking enough vitamin D you don’t need to take calcium. Your body needs D to absorb Calcium. If you are low in D taking calcium won’t help you at all because it needs D to absorb it. If you are taking D your body will absorb enough calcium from the food you eat so you shouldn’t need to take calcium.

So Take vitamin D. I take 8,000 IU’s a day and feel great. The only side effect from D is happiness. How can that be a bad thing.

I am 70 yrs..was told my bone scan was on high end of the base group they use as starting point for measurement.I take D but no calcium and am having Dr’s pressure me that I must take calcium and they get so annoyed I don’t feel they want me as a patient.I take anti oxidants and fish oil but would love to find a Dr that would support me in natural health with recommended amounts while taking things. At my age Dr’s are confusing me and I don’t like making up my own doses. I am healthy but at my age need support to keep things in line..Where do I find such a Dr. that will not push me to take Pharma prescriptions which I fear and work with me on what I need in the natural area….

THEY JUST DON’T GET IT – OBAMA DOESN’T GET IT!!! WHEN HE SAID THAT HE HADN’T EXPLAINED THE HEALTH CARE PLAN ENOUGH AND THAT IS WHY AMERICANS ARE UPSET – WE KNOW WHAT IS IN THE PLAN. THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN – WE DON’T WANT HEALTH CARE REFORM – WE DON’T WANT SOCIALIZED MEDICINE – WE DON’T WANT GOVERNMENT RUN ANYTHING!!! ARE THEY DEAF OR JUST PLAIN STUPID!!! OBAMA’S STATE OF THE UNION SPEECH LAST NIGHT WAS NOTHING MORE THAN A DEVIOUS PLAN TO MAKE AMERICANS THINK HE HAD MOVED TO THE MIDDLE, BUT YOU KNOW THAT IS NOT TRUE – ESPECIALLY WHEN HE SAID DON’T LEAVE ME NOW WHEN WE ARE SO CLOSE – AND THAT HE WILL NOT STOP FIGHTING. I HOPE EVERY DEMOCRAT RUNNING FOR REELECTION IN NOVEMBER LOSES AND EVERY STATE FOLLOWS MASSACHUSETTS.

I am with you 100% and very frustrated.I make any calls & sign any petitions I hear about but fear that is not enough. Our only hope is we all stand together and not back off.. This governmnent is so full of lies and devious conspiracies that things are going to happen behind closed doors before we will be able to respond. We need powerful assistance and guidance and where are we going to find that and right now we have to sit this yr until elections and it may be too late by then. Once something is passed we may not be able to undo damage.Be aware these jerks will pass little bits and pieces but will have underlying openings to add to them. They think we will not notice.. Everyone must stay alert, we are growing, we are right…

This article is WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!!!!! It says you need 10 micrograms of vitamin D, which is equivalent ot 400 international units (the amount in a multivitamin). That level of vitamin D won’t even be a percievable blip in your blood level. Most people have a blood level around 10-20 ng/mL and you need to take enought to exceed 50. You need at least 5000 IU (or 125 micrograms) to elevate your blood level anywhere near an amount known to reduce the odds of serious chronic disease.

Rich what you says goes with all I read and hear on Health radio but what I am seeing is even higher doses than what you take…. I am uping my doses now as I believe what you say…My health store says min of 6,000….
