Break Down Those Barriers To Health

Spring is here, and with it comes a time of growth and renewal. With this change of season comes blossoming of new life, new ideas and, hopefully, a spring-fresh dedication to health and wellness. So let’s remove the barriers to our health while embracing a renewed commitment to holistic well practices.

Whether you suffer stress or back pain, headaches or PMS, tendonitis or something else altogether, the prescription medications helped a bit, for a while. But when they wore off, you had to take more… and more still. And now you are seeing an acupuncturist, a chiropractor, a massage therapist or some other holistic therapist and are finding that the requirements to do what is asked of you (even attending the frequent appointments), is just not quite fitting into your busy daily schedule.

Taking personal responsibility for your own health is difficult. It requires dedication and patience. Life is tough. Personal suffering is worse. It seems we all, in our quest for health, wellbeing or simple pain relief, encounter the same set of barriers. These are things that seem either to be in our way or fall along our path as we traverse it toward a better quality of life. And while each person’s barriers are of different sizes and shapes, the following three are by far the most common.

Barrier 1: Time
Perhaps the most obvious barrier to achieving optimal health is time. There is only so much of it in a day, a week, a month and a year. We can’t add time, and when we finally do find a free moment it quickly gets eaten up by unanticipated sources, like work, housework, family obligations, events, projects, you name it.

Something always seems to get in the way of doing our exercises; driving out of the way to purchase organic whole foods; eating balanced meals; getting a healthy amount of sleep; taking those supplements as directed; or drinking enough water or exercising. After a while, people start to think that going the “alternative” route to relief may be a bit overbearing. You have to visit the practitioner, perhaps several days per week for several weeks or months. You have to take herbs or supplements—and handfuls of them several times per day. You have to do a series of stretches or exercises between office visits… and sometimes even on the same day! Who’s got time for all that?

The main difference between mainstream medicine and alternative therapies is that the practitioners and products of alternative “medicine” are working toward healing you, not patching you up. And healing takes time. And I’m here to tell you that time is no true barrier to health!

Look, I know you’re busy. You’ve got kids, a demanding job and a hectic family schedule. But if you need to exercise you can prioritize 20 minutes at a time, three days per week.

Forget Seinfeld reruns; do your stretches instead. Better yet, why not do the exercises while watching your favorite sitcom or the evening news? Why not skip reading the morning paper and go for a walk instead. Avoid the take-out lunch and go to the farmer’s market on the way home from work, then prepare a healthy lunch in advance.

There are always sets of minutes in a day that can be “constructed” into health minutes. You simply need to prioritize your day, your week, your life—and establish the time. If you don’t, and your ills become chronic or life threatening, what good is your time then?

Do yourself, your family and your loved-ones a favor and break down that Time Barrier. It doesn’t exist; it’s an illusion. Time is an abstract concept, but its utility can be physically modified on the fly. Only laziness and lack of creativity makes time short. And we both know you’re neither lazy nor uncreative!

Barrier 2: Money
The second most common barrier to achieving perfect health is money. That is, having the financial means available to buy the best organic or free-range foods, receiving the best holistic treatments and taking only the highest quality herbs and supplements available.

A personal trainer costs money. A weekly massage costs money. Acupuncture gets expensive. Herbs are cheap, but their protocols are long so their costs add up. The main thing is to prioritize your wellness dollars.

If you are spending X amount on health each month, how can it be maximized? And if you are spending money on extra cable TV channels, expensive dinners and unnecessary clothing, then why not cut back on these and allocate the money for your health instead?

Despite what you were told in the 80s, it’s not how you look, it’s how you feel that counts! One of the best things you can do is to learn methods of reducing stress and some stretches and exercises you can do by yourself at any time of day or night. This will allow you to reduce your massage frequency and you will derive greater benefit from the herbs and acupuncture you are receiving.

I recommend consulting your holistic practitioner to get a clear picture of how many visits over what length of time will be required of you. You also want to know what herbs or supplements you may need to take and over what period of time. With this information you will know ahead of time (no pun intended), how much money you will need to allocate for your natural therapy.

With this information, you can begin to budget your wellness dollars accordingly. I highly recommend you not begin a course of treatment until you have the means to attend every required visit and to purchase whatever additional things are needed along the way.

There’s no sense in wasting money on half a therapy. And while you’re pulling resources together, work on your sleep/wake cycle, stress relief and diet. With clarity of costs and allocation of money in place, money will no longer be a barrier to your health.

Barrier 3: Beliefs
The third most common barrier to health is you own level of belief in what it is you are doing (or receiving) and what the result of that will be.

Are you on a fast? If so, do you believe it will do you good and deliver on the expected results?

Are you receiving CranioSacral therapy or Rolfing? Do you think the sessions are helping, or will help if you follow them through their prescribed course of treatment?

My point is, many people who begin and then drop out of holistic therapies do so because they lose faith in the method of care they are receiving. This either happens because the practitioner has made unrealistic promises or the patient was expecting different results than the ones gained. And most Americans want fast and easy results. Managing goals and expectations is the key.

By their very nature, alternative therapies are not fast—but they are generally safe, holistic, non-invasive and, if followed through, their results can be long lasting and life changing. When working with alternative therapies of any kind, you must obtain a clear picture of what may and may not happen, and over what period of time.

Managing your goals (e.g., “I want to be pain free by July 4″) and your expectations (e.g., “At the very least, I expect to be gardening again in April”), you will be able to ‘hold the course’ as the treatment progresses.

The best way to overcome the belief barrier is to discuss the therapeutic method at length with the practitioner who is offering the service. Ask for reading material. Ask for case studies. Talk to other patients. Put Google to work for you, too.

By doing this you will empower yourself with enough information to know that the program is either not the right one for you, or that you can rightfully dedicate time, money and effort to it.

In closing, I want you to know that I understand that you may be at the end of your rope. You have already spent huge sums of money, time and effort trying to get better, to become pain free, to lead the life you desire. But your life isn’t over and there is plenty of time left to truly live. All you have to do is redouble your courage, dig your heels in and: 1) make the time, 2) allocate the money, and 3) believe in the outcome.

By breaking down the barriers to health, nothing can block your path to the healthy pain-free life you so rightly deserve!

    I wonder why there’s not one, single article about the Japanese nuclear disaster? If you open a conversation on this, you would be shockingly surprised WHO AREW behind these events. Sure, many brainwashed believe that’s “Mother Nature”. But there’s something else too. The devil’s double agents: the Mossad and the CIA, which are apparently behind these tectonic ‘experiments’.       Your videos are unrelated to the topic or are you a confused Republican? The one video on HAARP is nothing more than the study of the ionosphere/to increase communication’s frequencies. It’s a joint venture with the University of Alaska and the Air Force. There are few government facilities where you can just walk into as Ventura was trying to do. Did you notice how he mysteriously flew in by helicopter and made it seem like no one was around. Yet during the filming a camper and a car drove by and on a road just outside the gate. I do believe you need a little of Dr. Wiley’s therapy.

    Dr. Wiley, the one thing that few people get around to thinking about is the idea that good health starts at an early age. Eating right is a huge chunk of the good health equation.
    Americans are at a disadvantage because good health is not a cultural goal. It’s great to be free, and being independent sure beat living in a country where you’re treated like cattle (contrary to what some Washington types say).
    Read. Learn. Compare notes. Find things that work and keep you healthy.
    Be suspicious of those who tell you that it’s OK to burn the candle at both ends and eat and drink what you want (because your sainted MD will be there with all the pills and treatments you need – HA!).
    For most people, your health is YOUR responsibility. No one (especially Uncle Scam) is going to lead you by the hand and tell you everything you need to know about good health.

      SC, you are so right in your assessment that health begins at an early age. Indeed, we learn our habits and routines as youngsters. What we eat, how we eat, when we eat, our notions and habits associated with exercise and belief systems… For parents and educators reading this article and others like it, taking the information to heart and bringing it to the children and teens is essential to helping shape or reshape their idea of their role in their own health.

        My mother is from the deep South and fried everything that didn’t fry her. She still cooks this way and does not understand why she is fat
        (she is also a sugar hound). I could not wait to move out when I was in my early twenties. I haven’t had any fried food in many years, and stay away from sugar and caffeine. I do my best to stick to a whole foods diet and take lots of supplements and vitamins. I walk the dog every day for about an hour, which is good for both of us. Right now I’m in the middle of a kidney/liver cleanse and have noticed my energy level and mood has improved even more.

          A plant-based diet is the cure for any ailment. Loading up on those yummy cheeseburgers (rotting, decomposing corpses) will take you down the road to numerous health problems.             While the types of foods we eat, and how we otherwise care for our physical bodies, is of importance, we need to address the root causes of our ailments before any true healing can occur.

            More and more we are finding that health issues are rooted in unresolved cell memory. We literally hold past traumas, guilt, unforgiveness, and even unexpressed desires, in our bodies, creating areas of stuck energy. These areas eventually lead to stagnation in our lymphatic flow, and cause dis-ease to develop, much like pathogenic growth in a stagnant pool. Once we identify these areas, we can clear them and healing results very quickly.

            We need to get over thinking that anyone else can heal us. This is largely because we are lazy, and want some ‘expert’ to do it for us, with the least inconvenience. WE are the ONLY ones who can resolve these issues, because it is largely a spiritual process. More and more practitioners are aware of this, and are developing methods to help us get to these root causes, but since money is a huge impediment for many of us, we can also easily learn to do this ourselves.

            Those who practice hands-on healing (and get results) as Yeshua did, do so with a burst of LOVE-voltage which clears energy channels, if the person is open and willing. It is the frequency of Universal Love which brings all true restoration.

            Qigong is one such method. It is a practice of aligning body/mind/spirit, and has been around forever.

            The Healing Code is on the NY Times bestseller list, and is the latest method of releasing cell memory.

            And remember to SMILE. This automatically produces endorphins, and aligns us with the healing frequency. Try it! It immediately lifts the spirit and gives a sense of better well-being.

      There were no cardiologists until 1940. They were needed because of the ingestion of more and more animal products. Also, at the turn of the century (1900) when Americans switched to an animal-based diet, cancer and heart disease were not even in the top ten causes of death!

      My how things have changed.

        Prior to 1900, most people died of the communicable diseases, ie tuberculosis, scarlet fever, etc. If that didn’t do you in, a job related accident would. One item the article failed to mention is genetics. For example, my grandfather lived to the ripe old age of 90! He drank & smoked, usually a pack a day & about 10 beers a night!
        He worked as plumber for over 60 years, not the safest or healthiest of occupations. He was partially gassed during WW 1 & 10 months of trench warfare left him with some lifelong physical problems. Grandma faired a little better, she made to 102! My paternal grandma made it to 96 & she loved her whiskey & fatty foods. All of their diets would make any vegetarian gasp for clean air. My paternal grandpa who had congenital heart disease only made it 70, but he loved his beer & pipe. Virtually all my great aunts & uncles lived to their late 80′s or 90′s. I’m not advocating these aforementioned vices or diets. I certainly don’t adhere to them myself. However, there are really no guarantees when it comes to health. One of my high school classmates, a vegetarian, runner & yoga practioner who professionally was a nurse/health educator keeled over at age 48! On the other hand, the last surviving veteran of WW 1 recently passed away at the age of 110. He had no special diet or exercise regime according to the obituary, just a passion to live life to the fullest. Even my centurion grandma outlived exercise/diet advocate Jack Lalane, who died back in January, by a full a full five years & she had some serious health problems, starting with a ruptured appendix at age 79. It never stopped her, though from getting on with the business of living. In retrospect, practice good health habits & keep yourself informed but remember what I said about guarantees!

          Mike W – We are not living longer so much because of better medicines, but because of better hygiene.

          Actually, that trend is beginning to reverse, because of high stress factors.

    Avoid any “studies” that promote anything, also avoid the nannyu state crap on long life plans. Go check out all the supposedly bad “food” that should be banned and not eaten. It all depends who owns the products and who has total control. Years ago eggs and chickn was supposed to be eaten sparingly and on 1-2 a week. When Tyson got the chicken industry vertically owned and controlled, suddenly it was the “food” that was a great one to eat. Same happened to pork until Smithfeild food got the vertical control of pork production. With it completely controlled, then came the wonders of the new whitye meat program. Now beef is the evil protein scource, and the push is still for some company get complete vertically controlled by first controlling beef processing, feedlots controlled by a few companies , and the push now for producers to become some master company to tell them what to raise and what to produce. Why did Onumnutts buy Kolbe beef from Japan, becasue the governemnt controls the grading system with its inspectors to control what is consumed by th public.

      I hope you and everyone else are aware of the fact that the “inspectors” inspect about 1% of all the animals slaughtered for food. Anyone notice that there are no longer stickers on packages stating “inspected by the USDA”?

        Cathy – There are those who prophesied long ago that many diseases of these times would be from our food, especially animal products.

        Now with GMO invading fruits and vegetables as well, eating healthfully is becoming more and more difficult.

        We need to take care not to have negative feelings toward what we eat. If we eat something, we should bless it, give thanks for it, and intend for it to nourish us. If we feel doubtful about what we eat, it will affect us more negatively.

        We are in times where we must do the best we can with what we have. All of these assaults on our bodies and minds are to cause us stress, and to destroy us. But they only can if we let them.

        The wise use adversity as a means to discover how much greater they are than they ever believed. I think that’s what it’s all about.

    Instead of taking personal responsibility for your own health it is much easier to blame someone else for your problems – and attempt to get someone else to pay to correct them. After all, I didn’t eat all those hamburgers because I liked them – McDonalds MADE ME DO IT.

    Cathy, meats and food is coming from several countries do have inspected by USDA but are broken down off shore on ships in side the offshore limits so get by under a rule of processed products. This started in the late 70′s andhas only gotten worse. When contaminated foot snf mouth disease was discovered on the east coast, it was in the news only a few hours and then disappeared. Which can from South America or Africa, 2 spots that can not wipe out the diease. Just USA can not get a brucillious free status, because of the elk and buffalo and wild game in the parks. When buffalo wander off of the parks they are disposed of so livestock don’t become infected. Another fine example of government meddling and not bothering with human health. We know the mexican cattlre bring in TB that is pretty deadly and yet the dumb bastard beltway idoits can not build a fence to syop all the infect illegals crowding in to the USA. The out breaks that have been spotted in the USA were mexican origin livestock, as well as the

    When all’s said and done, Mom’s advice is still good: eat your vegetables. Everything in moderation, etc. There’s nothing new under the Sun.

    When I was a kid in the 40s and 50s, no one had to tell us to go outside and get exercise. You couldn’t keep us inside with a team of horses. We did what all kids did then: played ball, hiked, biked, swam, ran, walked, sledded, etc.

    No one had to tell us to “hydrate;” when we got thirsty, we drank water. No helmets, kneepads, etc., we experienced the skinned knees and hard knocks of life, and we survived the better for it. And above all, we had freedom. Mom said, “be back for supper,” and that was it.

    Kids today are coddled, managed, channelled into doing things they really don’t want to do. The X-Box and PC have stolen meaningful young lives for a generation and made them fat, dumb and unhappy. A hard day’s work is unknown to them, and high fructose corn syrup is turning them into diabetics.
