BP, Sempra Launch Hawaiian Wind Farm

HOUSTON, (UPI) — A wind farm planned for the Hawaiian island of Maui will provide enough power to meet the yearly energy demands of 10,000 homes, developers said.

British energy company BP and Sempra U.S. Gas and Power announced plans to develop jointly the Auwahi wind farm in Hawaii.

“Today marks an important milestone as this is BP’s first venture in delivering clean energy to the people of Hawaii,” John Graham, president and chief executive officer at BP Wind Energy, said in a statement.

The 31-megawatt wind farm will generate enough electricity to meet the annual demands of 10,000 average households, the British energy company said.

Maui Electric Co. signed a long-term purchase agreement for the power generated from the wind farm. Hawaii has a goal of securing 40 percent of its electricity from renewable energy resources by 2010.

“We look forward to providing a stable supply of clean power to the region and becoming a long-term partner with the local community,” said Jim Sahagian, vice president of renewables for Sempra U.S. Gas and Power.

BP said project construction is under way and the wind farm should be mobilized by the end of summer.
