Boy, 12, Starts Video Game Dumping Effort
SPECIAL
Max Goldstein, who says he enjoys the virtual combat of "Call of Duty," has started a movement called "Played Out" that seeks to gets rid of the video games.

NEWTOWN, Conn. (UPI) — A 12-year-old Newtown, Conn., boy is asking other game players to dump their violent video games in the wake of the elementary school shooting in his town.

Max Goldstein, who says he enjoys the virtual combat of “Call of Duty,” has started a movement called “Played Out” that seeks to gets rid of the video games, The Hartford Courant reported.

Goldstein said he didn’t think of the idea last Friday, when Adam Lanza, 20, entered Sandy Hook Elementary school and killed 20 children and six adults after killing his mother in their home. He said he came up with the program Tuesday after attending a funeral of a friend’s brother, Daniel Barden, one of the victims.

As he listened to the service, Max said he was struck by “how real this was” and how he didn’t want to kill, even in the cyber realm of a video game, The Courant said.

His mother, Roberta Mittleman, said she at first barred Goldstein from playing violent video games, but relented.

“I don’t believe it’s a root cause, but it’s a contributing factor,” Roberta Mittleman said of the games.

FIRST, THIS STORY KEEPS CHANGING. WHEN I FIRST READ ABOUT THIS TRAGEDY, Adam Lanza WAS TWENTY-FOUR – NOT, TWENTY. IN ADDITION, I FIRST READ Mr. Lanza KILLED HIS MOTHER [A TEACHER], AT THE SCHOOL – NOT, AT HOME. THERE ALSO WAS SOME DISCREPANCY ABOUT THE TYPES OF FIREARMS USED [OR, IN Mr. Lanza's POSESSION]. THE PUBLIC OFTEN CRITICIZES THE MEDIA FOR SENSATIONALIZING TRAGIC EVENTS. BY RUSHING TO REPORT THIS STORY – WITH CONFUSING- AND INACCURATE INFORMATION – THE MEDIA JUSTIFIES THE PUBLIC’S CLAIM.

IN REFERENCE TO VIOLENT VIDEO-GAMES, Max Goldstein’s EFFORT MAY BE SUCCESSFUL IN NEWTON, BUT, NOT ELSEWHERE. AS EVIDENCED BY ” BIG MONEY-MAKING-” AMERICAN FILMS, AMERICANS LOVE “BLOODFESTS.” MANY PARENTS ALLOW THEIR CHILDREN TO WATCH “R-” AND “NC-17-” RATED FILMS. SO, THESE GAME MANUFACTURERS ARE MAKING TOO MUCH MONEY TO LET THEIR “GOLDEN GEESE FLY-TO-THE-WAYSIDE,” WITHOUT A “BLOODY” FIGHT.

    • Joey

What he’s doing is not admirable, it’s irrational and he must have had video game issues.
You’re doing what Obama’s doing wanting a nanny state. Video games don’t kill people, people do.

  • mr_bad_example

i think little max probably has “issues” with his games. maybe he gets stuck at certain levels and gets frustrated. besides, where does a 12 year old get $50+ per game?

    • anon

He gets the games from his mother because the beg and beg and beg for the game…
I stood in line for a used game when the game about running people over and killing Joe schmo first came out and a kid about 12 – 14 told his mother she HAD to buy it for him…the game was rated M-17 and he was neither….

    • CHRISTOPHER ALLEN HORTON

“mr_bad_example” – YOU WOULD BE SURPRISED AT THE AMOUNT OF MONEY TWELVE-YEAR OLDS HAVE IN THEIR POCKETS. THESE DAYS, FIFTY DOLLARS IS “CHUMP-CHANGE.”

    • Nadzieja Batki

Stupidity starts early and the kid just proved it. He probably badgered and whined to get the parents getting the games for which hard earned money had to be spent to support the game designers and producers. Shouldn’t have gotten them in the first place but he would probably have died if he didn’t get them. All this is is emotional response so everyone can say what a good little boy he is.
The games do not make anyone violent, it is the heart of a person which is evil and spends the life devising evil. The shrinks don’t know what the problem is so how can they offer a solution

  • eddie47d

America loves its violence and will search for a FIX no matter who tries to stop it. No one will tear those video games from them unless its from their “cold dead hands”. What the heck we have our rights to protect and what’s a few casualties along the way!

  • http://www.facebook.com/thomas.sherman.589 tgsherman

At least he understands that video games are bad! That is more than Obama can comprehend!

    • Nadzieja Batki

Don’t go on another prohibition kick, bigger problems will be created. Prohibiting something makes it more valuable and desirable so the games you consider violent will go on bootleg, underground, blackmarket. So do you want more policing agencies created to confiscate the games.

      • Bill

        Good analogy, Nad
I was raised on James Bond and I have no desire to go out and kill people.

    • eddie47d

Like any movie or video product there will be an endless supply from bootleggers. The Chinese and a few other countries reproduce the same games or movies and pump them back into the American markets. The Chinese wouldn’t be doing it unless the desire for violent videos weren’t here. No different than drug producing countries who say if Americans didn’t demand it we wouldn’t be selling it.

    • Joey

What are you talking about? Both him and Obama are trying to bring a nanny state, but the kid doesn’t understand what he’s doing.

  • logical and wise

Wow! I am appalled at the comments on this site! This boy is trying to do good after going through tragedy and everybody is worried about their own gaming rights…Can someone say Selfish? This poor kid has to live with this tragedy from his town forever and playing violent video games will never be the same for him or for many others that have gone through this ordeal. Good for him! Don’t worry, to the others that have left comments, your useless video games will not get banned. Now go and put your energy where you can do some good in the world!

    • Nadzieja Batki

Except for one thing, you are not logical nor wise. You are responding on an emotional level believing that the boy is doing some good. When you can think, think about this that when you believe that someone is doing good they can actually be creating more evil.

    • Joey

Those who would give up freedom for security that won’t even work deserve neither.
He’s a kid. He’s not thinking rationally, he feels guilty. Sometimes when I was grieving I reacted in odd ways too.

    • soldier

I didn’t kill those kids in Newtown when I fired up Borderlands 2 for Xbox 360. Maybe if one of the teachers was armed, Adam Lanza would have been stopped. We protect our banks, the white house, etc, but schools are advertised as gun free salughtering zones.

  • tncdel

Another contributing factor: Roe v. Wade. Kids have been brought up thinking human lives are expendable.

    • Joey

And big government politicians who never grew out of the stage the boy is in right now.

  • Franklyn Molina

What this little 12 year old snot nosed sissified punk fails to realize, is that we need to STOP blaming everything else, and put the blame where it truly belongs. First, on the mother for neglecting this kid; focusing only on her job at the school when her two boys needed her the most. Add to the fact that she was pretty quick to commit him to a mental institution when she didn’t bother to try actually being a mother. And the primary blame goes to Adam Lanza himself. Adam Lanza was a horrible evil individual. The bottom line is that Adam Lanza is insane. Max Goldstein is an ignorant little boy who fails to learn from history on the account of his even more ignorant parents. People were insane and violent BEFORE video games. There were shootouts and hangings from the gallows back during the days of the Old West, during the middle ages; the crusades, I could go on forever. Also add to the fact that religious documents and holy books are the greatest motivation for the worst kind of violence than any video game, movie, or TV show EVER possibly could. COMBINED. Max Goldstein needs to grow up a little more, live in the real world, and accept the fact that these are the risks that come with living in a free society. I can foresee this little historically ignorant child will lead another communist branch of Occupy Wall Street if he doesn’t learn to be a man and abandon his misguided quest.

    • CHRISTOPHER ALLEN HORTON

      “Franklyn Molina,”

      YOU CONTRADICTED YOURSELF.

ON ONE HAND, YOU RIDICULED MOTHERS FOR NOT SPENDING TIME WITH THEIR CHILDREN. THEN YOU CALLED Adam Lanza, EVIL AND Max Goldstein, IGNORANT.

PEOPLE GROW-UP TO BE VIOLENT BECAUSE NO ONE GIVES THEM THE LOVE THEY NEED, AS CHILDREN. LOVE IS NOT, LOVE, IF THE RECIPIENT DOES NOT FEEL “LOVED.”

Adam Lanza IS NOT, CRAZY; HE MERELY GREW TIRED OF LIVING HIS LIFE IN ISOLATION WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY BEING SURROUNDED BY PEOPLE WHO MISUNDERSTOOD HIM, BUT, “CLAIMED” TO HAVE “LOVED,” HIM.

WHEN YOU LOOK AT KILLERS THROUGHOUT HISTORY, YOU WILL ALWAYS FIND-OUT SOMEONE ELSE – USUALLY, FAMILY MEMBERS AND CLASSMATES – HURT THEM, FIRST.

      • Franklyn Molina

Not the point…..NOT THE POINT! You’re letting your ideology seep into your brains; you’re only getting exhibit A. You’re an idiot because you don’t know how to read properly. That, and you once again FAIL TO TAKE THE GLUE OUT OF YOUR CAPSLOCK. I told you, stop doing that, and then you can make your rebuttals to me. Stop with the constant capslock. It’s making you look like an obvious troll. Getting back to what I was saying, you’re only getting exhibit A. The point is that the blame DOES NOT belong to violent video games at all. Video games kill people. Irrelevant; replace video games with guns, replace guns with ciggarrettes. People are going to use this shooting to make up some blasted excuse for the government to use behavior control because they don’t like what we choose to do. And the government relies on ignorant punk like Max Goldstein to be brainwashed and completely miss the big picture.

      • CHRISTOPHER ALLEN HORTON

        “Franklyn Molina,”

        FIRST, YULETIDE GREETINGS. “Mr. Molina.”

YOU SHOULD KNOW – BY, NOW – I AM NOT LIKE OTHER Personal Libertarians WHO LOOK FOOLISH BY MAKING REPLIES DIRECTED AT A SPECIFIC INDIVIDUAL; YET, THEY DO NOT ADDRESS THESE INDIVIDUALS, DIRECTLY. [When a person utilizes another commenter's language or essence, it is OBVIOUS TO ALL, whom he/she is responding to]. IF I HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY TO YOU, “Mr. Molina,” I WILL “CALL YOU BY NAME.” YOU TELL ME TO NOT ADDRESS YOU UNTIL I TURN-OFF MY “Capslock.” YET, YOU REPLIED. SO, I MUST ASSUME YOUR DESIRE TO REBUT ME IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN MY CAPITAL LETTERS.

NOW, “Mr. Molina,” MY INITIAL COMMENTARY WAS A REPLY TO
Y-O-U-R ACTUAL WORDS. YOU BEGAN YOUR COMMENTARY RIDICULING MOTHERS FOR NOT SPENDING ENOUGH TIME WITH THEIR CHILDREN. IT WAS MY PEROGATIVE TO REPLY TO WHATEVER “CAUGHT MY EYE” IN YOUR COMMENTARY. I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH YOUR RETURN-REPLY TO ME IN REFERENCE TO THIS ARTICLE’S CONTENT. SO, “Mr. Molina,” IT WAS
Y-O-U WHO DO NOT CORRECTLY READ “MY” COMMENTS.

  • Joey

Oh, this is a grief stage kids might go through because they don’t think rationally and the consequences to this are damaging. It’s just like when they try to ban guns and a site called personal liberty should KNOW better than to want a nanny state regarding video games.

  • http://www.facebook.com/john.sweet.12 John Sweet

The Lack of personnel responsibility seems to be a great excuse to discriminate. We already have the lady that was fired for being to attractive. What is next the “Jocks” are a threat for being so actively violent prone, and concessions for the grades that the ones that study make are spread out to make sure that no one is below average

  • soldier

I would say with the exception of the call of duty series of video games, most non sport, non sim video games, pretty much have a theme of liberty against tyranny. For example, one recent game, “Transformers, Fall of Cybertron”, shows what can happen when a tyrannical force comes to power. The results can be genocide as the deceptacons lead a genoicde of the autobots. This is what happens when evil comes to power. Mao Ze Dong proved it, Hitler proved it, Pol Pot proved it, etc. If people want to ban video games, then we should ban all movies and all books. Sure some video games are propaganda, but as an avid player for years, many video games actually show what can happen when a tyrannical force takes power. Whether a powerful corporation, government, etc. I dare say I have been woken up more to the potential dangers of tyranny through video games than in the lamestream media, and in most hollywood propaganda fests.

  • soldier

They can rip my xbox 360 controller from me only after they remove my piece from my cold, dead hands..

  • Suzanne

Why is nobody talking about the fact that this and most killing sprees were committed by people on prescription psychotropic meds? Why do video games and movies not send you personally on a rampage? Well, are you taking meds that alter your mind? Didn’t think so.
You want someone or something to blame?
    Check this out…
    http://www.ignatius-piazza-front-sight.com/2012/12/17/front-sight-special-blog-psych-drugs-not-guns-doing-the-killing/

    • Franklyn Molina

Exactly. That’s what a lot of people fail to understand. Video games are NOT to be blamed for this sort of situation; violent video games DO NOT cause people to go out on shooting sprees. When I was a little boy growing up in the 80′s, I used to watch Columbo with my mom and I NEVER once in my life picked up a cigar. People need to start reanalyzing where the blame needs to be placed. But that will never happen, thanks to liberalism, not to mention emotions. It’s times like this I wish human being would start thinking more like Vulcans. Then again, not everybody can think like Mr. Spock.

    • CHRISTOPHER ALLEN HORTON

      “Suzanne,”

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PRESCRIPTION DRUGS AND CRIME IS A “SMOKESCREEN” FAVORED BY THE CRIMINAL-JUSTICE SYSTEM IN ORDER TO AVOID LEGITIMATE INVESTIGATIONS OF WHY A CRIME ACTUALLY OCCURED.

THIS IS COMMON FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT IN REFERENCE TO DOMESTIC-VIOLENCE CASES. IF A HUSBAND OR BOYFRIEND IS INTOXICATED, IT IS EASY FOR POLICE TO SAY HE BEAT THE FEMALE WHILE IN A DRUG-INDUCED RAGE – EVEN THOUGH, ACTUAL CIRCUMSTANCES INDICATE THE FEMALE CAUSED THE MELEE.

AS LONG AS DRUGS EXIST [PHARMACEUTICAL AND ILLICIT] LAW ENFORCEMENT WILL HAVE AN EXCUSE FOR BEING LAZY AND INEPT.
