Bombs Defused, Suspects Arrested In Russia

MOSCOW, Aug. 25 (UPI) — Authorities in Russia said they defused two bombs and detained five suspected terrorists Thursday in the country’s North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia.

Russia’s National Anti-terrorism Committee said one of the detained militants is suspected of being involved in a 2010 bombing in Vladikavkaz, the capital of North Ossetia, which killed 17 people and injured more than 190.

Officials said the disarmed explosive devices were equal to 5 and 20 kilograms of TNT, RIA Novosti reported.

Russia has been battling an Islamic insurgency in the North Caucasus, with heavy fighting in both Ingushetia and Dagestan.
