Bombings In Caucasus Region Injure 15

MAKHACHKALA, Russia, Aug. 22 (UPI) — At least 15 people, including three children, were injured in two bomb explosions in Dagestan in the Caucasus region of Russia, authorities said.

A blast was set off Sunday in a supermarket in Dagestan’s capital city of Makhachkala, and a second bomb was detonated after security forces arrived at the scene, authorities said.

“As a result of the first blast, a shopkeeper was hurt. After the second blast, eight people were taken to hospital with splinter and blast injuries, two taken to a clinic and four to a children’s hospital, including three children,” a law enforcement spokesman told RIA Novosti.

The first bomb was set off remotely by a mobile phone, the local Interior Ministry said.

Investigators say they consider the bombings to be terrorist acts, ITAR-Tass reported.

Russian security forces are still engaged in fighting with militants in republics in the region more than 10 years after the end of a federal war against separatists in Russia’s North Caucasus republic of Chechnya.
