Boehner Says He’ll Fly Commercial Aircraft When He Becomes Speaker

November 19, 2010 by

Boehner says he'll fly commercial aircraft when he becomes SpeakerA watchdog group that promotes transparency and integrity in government has praised House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) for announcing that he will fly commercial instead of using military aircraft when he becomes Speaker of the House.

Boehner is expected to become the next Speaker when Republicans take control of the chamber in January. He will replace Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who has been criticized by the GOP for allegedly using military aircraft to travel with her family and friends. In documents recovered by the group Judicial Watch, Pelosi's military travel is believed to have cost the United States Air Force more than $2.1 million.

In a Judicial Watch press release, the organization said it was happy that Boehner "will not follow Pelosi's corrupt example." Boehner's decision to use commercial aircraft is part of his party's attempt to reduce government spending.

"Over the last 20 years, I have flown back and forth to my district on commercial aircraft. And I'm going to continue to do that," said Boehner, quoted by the Los Angeles Times.

According to the news provider, Pelosi's aides have claimed that she often flies commercial and that she has used military aircraft less than her predecessor, Republican Dennis Hastert.
