Biden Said He Will Impeach The President For War Not Approved By Congress… In 2007

If President Barack Obama launches an attack on Syria without full Congressional approval, do you think Vice President Joe Biden will attempt to have him impeached?

On Tuesday, we brought you Constitution-friendly Obama, circa 2007; today, we will revisit a Biden of the same vintage.

In 2007, Senator Biden said that he would absolutely do everything possible to impeach President George W. Bush if he attacked Iran without first gaining Congressional approval.

Via Seacoast Online, November 29, 2007:

Presidential hopeful Delaware Sen. Joe Biden stated unequivocally that he will move to impeach President Bush if he bombs Iran without first gaining congressional approval.

Biden spoke in front of a crowd of approximately 100 at a candidate forum held Thursday at Seacoast Media Group. The forum focused on the Iraq war and foreign policy. When an audience member expressed fear of a war with Iran, Biden said he does not typically engage in threats, but had no qualms about issuing a direct warning to the Oval Office.

“The president has no authority to unilaterally attack Iran, and if he does, as Foreign Relations Committee chairman, I will move to impeach,” said Biden, whose words were followed by a raucous applause from the local audience.

Biden said he is in the process of meeting with constitutional law experts to prepare a legal memorandum saying as much and intends to send it to the president.

Biden spent a great deal of time talking about illegal wars and impeaching President Bush around that time.

Here he is appearing on MSNBC in 2007:

Chris Matthews: “You said that if the President of the United States had launched an attack on Iran without congressional approval that would have been an impeachable offense. Do you want to review that comment you made? Well how do you stand on that now?”

Biden: “Yes I do. I want to stand by the comment I made. The reason I made the comment was as a warning. I don’t say those things lightly, Chris, you’ve known me for a long time. I was chairman of the judiciary committee for 17 years or its ranking member. I teach separation of powers and constitutional law. This is something I know. So I got together and brought a group of constitutional scholars together to write a piece that I’m going to deliver to the whole United State Senate pointing out the President has no constitutional authority…to take this nation to war against a country of 70 million people unless we’re attacked or unless there is proof we are about to be attacked. And if he does, if he does, I would move to impeach him. The House obviously has to do that but I would lead an effort to impeach him. The reason for my doing that, I don’t say it lightly, I don’t say it lightly. I say it because they should understand that what they were threatening, what they were saying, what it was adding up to be, what it looked like to the rest of the world we were about to do would be the most disastrous thing that could be done in this moment in our history that I could think of.”

I don’t think he will be allowed to say that again. Not if he wants to stay in politics that is. I would like to see that play out.

  • William James Ward

It is disconcerting to see what Biden has to say at most any
time. Holding Republicans to higher standards and Democrat
Communists to none is flattering to Biden’s rhinestone
character but fitting for the soap box administration…………William

As to Vice President Biden’s earlier statement, Benjamin Franklin pointed out that only two kinds of people do not change their minds: fools and dead men.

Mr Biden, like most other politicians, often voices one opinion in one circumstance and the contrary opinion in another. That it’s taken him from 2007 to 2013 to declare a change of mind is more remarkable than his desire to have President George W. Bush impeached absent a declaration of war but keeps his mouth closed where President Obama is concerned. He apparently knows which side his bread is buttered on.

biden what an immoral ahole for vice president but5 the he matches the president they could be book ends if they ever need a good job that they can handle

    • Oldmonkey

What else could he be other the town drunk he Is? Well I’ll tell you:
In the Art of War written by Sun Tzu he is a useful fool
He champions Lycurgus of Sparta wanting men to share their wives, with the state raising their children; eating their meals in common, hating fine art and culture, preferring Iron coins. Admired by Socrates for molding men’s lives like clay on a Potter’s wheel.
Admires Rousseau That preyed on women, and abandoned his children, who encourages monsters Like Maximilian Robespierre, using religion to encourage what it abhors like other Proto-fascism & Proto-communism.
He is a transgendered Madam Chiang Kai-Sheikh making excuses for abusing those he governed.

Just little bits of history repeating. We’ve seen it before
.. and we’ll see it again: Just little bits of history repeating

FDR on steroids, their root no different, and similar to Stalin.

      Like pork n beans.

Time to plaster Biden’s comments all over the news media and make him respond to the American people as to why he hasn’t started impeachment proceedings against Obummer. Obummer has a long list of impeachable offenses. It’s time for America to wake up and get off your lazy asses and start marching on Washington to take back our country before its too late!

  • bob arnold

and to think back of how everbody made a big deal about Dan Quale when as vice president he mispelled a word when all he did is read a card in front of him which had the wrong spelling, how far we have come to now have a liar and somebody who does not even no where he is, and tells you to buy a shotgun

    • Dennis Patrick

So you are one of those “blame cheney” libs, eh?

      • bob arnold

no you got that wrong i am one of the blame Obama,Biden guys

      • Iron Tub

bob and linda I am sure was talking about Joe Biteme telling women to just buy a shotgun during one of his bonehead speeches.

  • ibn insha

Biden said that about Bush. He has a different standard about Obama.

    • smilee

Obama is not invading another country with intentions to occupy it for ten years, Bush had no plan that had any chance of working, and it cost us 5000 needless lives and thousands more crippled and maimed and left Iraq in shambles., They are talking here about a three day military strike without entering invading Syria. To call this a war is a real stretch of the imagination The two cannot be compared as the same as they are not the same, this thread is pure silliness..

      • Barakolips

Yea right Einstein, and Vietnam started with a ” three day police action” , but you wouldn’t remember that because you probably weren’t born yet.

        • smilee

It did not happen in Libya so there is no reason to believe it will happen here either.Obama in these things has proven he thinks before he leaps.they did not do that in Vietnam and Iraq and he seem to have learned from those big mistakes. His model much more follows Bush 41’s model in the first Iraq war which was brilliant and our cheapest war.

  • bjeanfreau7

Here is candidate Obummer doing the same thing

    What two-faced snakes!

    • chocopot

And they get away with it because, first, the media cover up for them, and second, because the low-information morons who vote for the Communists – er, I mean the Democrats – have a very short memory.

      • real talk 1

Nothing short of memory just common sense.

      • Motov

That’s one thing that hasn’t been abused,..
Presidents have the power to “Pardon”
Usually right at the end of their terms they read from a laundry list of people getting pardoned.

  • Motov

Did you notice he was a member congress at the time he said that.
Now that he is VP, the rules have changed, He holds the mighty hammer (gavel) now, and probably envisions himself as Thor.

    • chocopot

Yes, people of very limited mental capacity and ability frequently have delusions of grandeur.

      • real talk 1

Oh how you speak so correctly about those liberals now that’s on time commenting the real deal.

    • Alan

He was against it, before he was for it. Much like that empty suit idiot Kerry.

      • real talk 1

All the top liberals suits are empty so you know what to expect from the bottom of the cesspool.

  • Stephen Gore

So this bafoon has been in Congress for 17 years. During those 17 years, just what has he done that is noteworthy.
We must be kind to our next President for 2 years, because Obama is going to get impeached. Now there will be riots in the streets, and people will lose their lives just due to stupidity, fueled by Al Sharpton, and Jessie Jackson, and the counciling board of the NAACP. This could be avoided of course, but the time has come that the man in the oval office who just wants the title and fame from that office has placed America in grave danger, economically, defensively, and as leaders of the free world. He should resign but won’t, even with hard evidence of criminal activitiy. He leaves no choice but it is a choice we must make America.

    • Al Chemist

Good post. I hope Obama does get impeached and removed from office, but I don’t think he will ever will be for the very reason you gave: that there would be riots in the street. The wussie Republicans in the House and the Senate (not to mention the democrats) know (or at least expect) this would happen. They don’t have the nerve, or they would already have already attempted it. We have a chance to remedy this in 2014, but it is only a small chance.

    • real talk 1

Oh well if there is rioting in the streets so be it it’s better than just letting those that did very little to make this country what is given the right to take away from those that did all they could to help make this country great ,and those that are here illegal courtesy of the FED GOV.

  • Al Chemist

The comments by Biden (Obama said essentially the same thing) are meant only for Conservative/Republicans … not the chosen ones. After all, why would anyone question Biden’s vast intellect and knowledge, and his superior gaff-free use of the English Language? In addition, they know that the MSM will not call them on a SMALL stretch of the truth, and a lot of the people in this former great Republic could give a (bleep) as long as they keep getting free stuff that they don’t have to work for. And … they will continue getting their free stuff as long as the liberal/progressive/commie/democrats are in power … and the people that do work keep sending a good portion of their hard earned money to DC.

  • Paul

Yep, Biden is starting his presidential campaign early! He is slowly moving to the center left to make sure he gets the support from the middle-of-road voters. That is all this is about. Despicable. It should be very interesting watching Biden attack Hillary during the next presidential election!! All the secrets they’ve shared should come to light.

    • chocopot

As much as I despise Hillary for being the anti-American Marxist she is, I will give her this: she’s quite bright. And compared to Biden… well, there are no words to describe it.

      • Motov

Her weakness is she does have an explosive temper, Get her riled and she may use some “colorful metaphores”

        • real talk 1

          And she’s a big liar.

        • cumiadom

Well lets start getting her riled then

      • real talk 1

Hillary might be as you say bright but she is a liar after all she lives with one of the greatest liar’s of all times.

        • chocopot

No argument there for sure. She’s as much of a liar as Obozo, and no further explanation of that is required.

  • 10-Nov-1775

Of course- if a Republican goes to war-IMPEACHMENT!! When a democrat goes to war- the silence is deafening. And, by the way, where is code pink, cindy sheha, and all the other anti war trolls who came out of the woodwork during Bush’s term, but the halfrican does it, NOTHING!!

  • 10-Nov-1775

The halfrican’s presidency should be marked with an asterisk.

  • Robert Messmer

First off he has not changed his position. His position was that if President Bush ordered a non-provoked attack against IRAN he would do what little he could to get the House to Impeach President Bush. No where in the interview did he mention President Obama or any Democrat, nor did he mention Libya, Syria, et al just Iran. I am quite sure that his position on THAT has not changed. Now as to impeachment of a Democrat President doing the same thing to a much smaller country we have no inkling what his position is on that subject.

  • cumiadom

He would do anything to impeach a Republican president, but if the POTUS is a lying communist and closeted muslim friend of his then there would be no reason for impeachment given the same circumstances as Demon-RATs are Above the Law and the Constitution is only good to subscribe an IRS croonie to the 5th Amendment when caught in a big lie to protect said community organizer, the Saul Alinsky and Frank Marshall heir.
