Benghazi Testimony Leaves Questions Unanswered
UPI
On Wednesday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on the terrorist attack on the U.S. Embassy in Benghazi, Libya.

On Wednesday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton finally fielded Congress’s questions about the Sept. 11 terror attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Despite her theatricality during the Senate hearing, Clinton’s testimony left much to be desired from lawmakers who are still seeking answers about the attack.

“For me, this is not just a matter of policy. It’s personal,” Clinton said at one point, choking up. “I stood next to President Obama as the Marines carried those flag-draped caskets off the plane at Andrews. I put my arms around the mothers and fathers, the sisters and brothers, the sons and daughters, and the wives left alone to raise their children.”

That moment was seized by mainstream media as the defining point of the Secretary of State’s testimony. Largely ignored, however, was the fact that Clinton didn’t satisfactorily answer any of the questions related to the State Department’s bizarre initial response to the attacks.

The Secretary of State was criticized by Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) for not recognizing the possibility for violent acts against the consulate in the destabilized country.

In a terse exchange with Clinton, Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) made clear that he felt the top diplomat’s response to the attack should have been a “career ending” failure.

“Had I been president and found you did not read the cables from Benghazi and from Ambassador Stevens, I would have relieved you of your post. I think it’s inexcusable,” he said.

“I think we can understand you’re not reading every cable,” Paul said. The Senator said he didn’t suspect Clinton of “bad motives” but that Benghazi was a “failure of leadership.”

In response, Clinton pointed out that an accountability review board appointed by the State Department had determined that the mistakes made in responding to the Benghazi attack we’re made at levels below her office.

“I am the Secretary of State. And the [Accountability Review Board] made very clear that the level of responsibility for the failures that they outlined was set at the Assistant Secretary level and below,” she said.

The Secretary of State said a department task force has translated the 29 recommendations for improving security delivered by the review board into 64 specific “action items” and that 85 percent of the items are expected to be completed by the end of March.

Paul also asked Clinton about the possibility of the Benghazi attack being related to a CIA-backed scheme to collect weapons in Libya in order to clandestinely arm Syrian rebels.

“Is the U.S. involved with any procuring of weapons, transfer of weapons, buying, selling, anyhow transferring weapons to Turkey out of Libya?” he asked.

Clinton brushed off the question, saying: “To Turkey? I will have to take that question for the record. Nobody has ever raised that with me.”

Paul pressed on: “It’s been in news reports that ships have been leaving from Libya and that they may have weapons and what I’d like to know is the annex that was close by, were they involved with procuring, buying, selling, obtaining weapons and were any of these weapons being transferred to other countries, any countries, Turkey included?”

The Secretary of State suggested that Paul should take up the matter with the CIA.

Clinton concluded her prepared testimony by telling Congress that the United States must continue to garner influence in unstable parts of the world like the Mideast and Africa.

“We have come a long way in the past four years, and we cannot afford to retreat now,” she told the Senate committee. “When America is absent, especially from unstable environments, there are consequences. Extremism takes root, our interests suffer, and our security at home is threatened.”

Why didn’t the right wing get all a flutter when so many diplomats were killed during the Bush administration?

This is just politics, politics, and more politics so the right can distract from the fact that it isn’t doing anything to solve the problems America has.

      Rob

      • Steve E

There we go blaming Bush again. Hey eddy and RBT, you see that? You guys always say that you lefties never use that in your mantra. Well, here it is again.

      • rendarsmith

You’re right Robert, Bush did it, so let’s just totally ignore it when this administration does it. Makes perfect sense.

      • Robert Smith

Why didn’t the right wing get all a dither over THOSE attacks?

        Rob

      • Steve E

Robert, there were no cover ups and lying by officials in those incidents. That’s why there was no investigation into a cover up.

      • eddie47d

The thing is Steve E is that there is no cover up and the Republicans had to dig one up. Poor intelligence and poor security? Absolutely but that’s not a cover up and only miscalculations which all Administrations get tripped up on. Benghazi is being corrected so maybe you could correct your ignorance too! Now if you are afraid about facts on Bush and keep covering for him then that makes you an unconvincing troll. Since you totally ignore the embassy attacks during Reagan’s tenure we are just pointing out what a weak minded hypocrite you are. That also occurred because of poor intelligence and poor security so keep still my fool for there is no doubt about your lack of intelligence or honesty for that simply doesn’t exist!

      • Steve E

eddie, you are a good troll but Benghazi is not being corrected. It is still being covered up. Didn’t you see Hillary yesterday at the hearing?

      • Jana

Because at least under Bush, they did send in the military to help the Embassy’s and the military were not told to STAND DOWN 3 times.

      • got my licence

The attacks that took place under Buch were done with no prior warning hence the term suprise attack. On 9-11 2012 we had a anniversary. We had several request for more security. This was no suprise.

What was a suprise was the lack of leadership and responce. But what does it matter.

Does it matter that it was more important to buy electric cars and charging systems for the embassies in Europe than to provide the request of security in a war tron country?

Does it matter that this ordeal went on for 7 hours without any attempt to rescue these Americans?

Does it matter that the American public was lied to for weeks?

Does it matter that the level of incompetence displayed on 9-11 may indicate what would take place if there was a all out attack on the United States.

So Robert don’t bother answering as I know that it does not matter to you. But be warned,
The monster you create will turn on you.

      • Robert Smith

Speaking of cover-ups: “The Bush administration has been plunged into a major political crisis following press reports that Bush was briefed on the danger of a terrorist attack involving the hijacking of US airliners more than a month before September 11. Despite the warning, delivered in an intelligence briefing last August, the White House took no action to forestall the deadliest terrorist action in US history, or to warn the public.”

        That’s from: http://wsws.org/en/articles/2002/05/bush-m18.html

        Rob

      • eddie47d

Where did you get “your license”? So lets see here… a surprise attack in one place is so much different than in another place. I now see your logic. Bush is good and Obama is bad or Reagan is good and Obama is bad or just MAYBE they all made bad calls in not preventing these attacks. Lets see now there were 34 at the Benghazi Consulate and 30 survived yet the anti-Americans on this site don’t like bringing that up. That doesn’t make for good news headlines and it sounds so much better that 4 died and then beat those 4 dead to death. I see YOUR propaganda is working… on your own minds of coarse.

      • eddie47d

Yes Steve E I saw the attacks against Hillary yesterday. What’s funny here is that you are ducking and covering far worse than she could every do. Nice foot work!

      • rendarsmith

Liberal logic 101: When somebody calls out a member of your party of their failures, dodge the question and blame Bush.

      • eddie47d

I sure didn’t do that because I’ll mention Presidents from all parties unlike you!

    • Bill

      Hi Warrior,
This is very similar to the Texas governors’ “Side Step Dance” in “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas”

All we saw was dancing and finger pointing

  • Steve E

When Hillary was asked about why the youtube video was previous stated by them as the cause of the attack, Hillary replied, “What difference at this point does it make?” She answered that way to avoid giving them real answer under oath. She learned that from her husband.

    • rendarsmith

100% correct. She’ll say whatever it takes to get herself through the current situation.

      • tim

She’s a POS just like her husband and the rest of them. I’m sure she had a real good coach on how to get around all the questions!!!!

    • alpha-lemming

I begrudgingly have to agree with her. Think about it. She HAS accepted responsibility for the “un-forced error” but with no consequences… that responsibility rings as hollow as a DNC capitalism rally. With no consequences…. what does it matter??… the answer is it doesn’t. Sad.

    • eddie47d

I wouldn’t be surprised if Steve E was co producer of that video the way he is dragging it out. This administration long ago admitted that video wasn’t the reason so why is it still an issue with you? As Hillary said mistakes were made and they are being fixed. That is what we want from public officials yet there is still no fixing you!

      • Steve E

The question is eddie; Who brought up the video in the first place. I didn’t co produce the video, because if I did, they would have arrested me like they did the producer of the video.

      • eddie47d

Wrong AGAIN Steve E they arrested him on another unrelated charge not the video controversy. You are grasping at straws!

      • Steve E

Believe that if you want eddie.

    • WIA Ben

The last time an Ambassador from the US was killed was in 1979, when Carter was President. The current last President before Obama was OBAMA. Thus, he is the one to be blamed for the last four years, when he did nothing except exacerbate the situation. The dems knew within hours that the attack on Benghazi was planned, and had nothing to do with a video. They sent out Susan Rice to spread the story because she could be said to know nothing of the facts of the matter.

  • Elevenarrows

Sorry, Rutter, I have to disagree. Rand Paul asked a very direct question and clearly, the Secretary was not going to give ANY information. I thought she came across incredibly gullible and ignorant-looking for someone who is supposed to be quite intelligent. I was embarrassed for her, but not surprised that it was a huge waste of time.

    • ranger09

In all my years none of these hearings ever amount to NOTHING, Just one politician polishing their own boots or polishing the boots of the other Club members. People the real problem has always been the congress and the Supreme Court For NOT DOING THEIR JOBS.

    • ranger09

These politicians on the review board knew what they were doing And that was doing as they always do NOTHING, HC knew what she was doing same as they always do, NOTHING. But it keeps the Sheep happy Just following the Bell
Wonder what the stats are for all the other Countries Embassys in the world, Seems like more people wants to attack OURS. Must be something here, Anyone have these figures.

  • ToughGuy1

    Hillary the master of cover-up!

  • ONTIME

More basis to the fact that incumbency breeds elitism and then more corruption, this disgusting display is a obvious example as to how elitism is used and how they protect each other from WTP. You the voter, tax payer and averge american are expendable and are there for the fleecing as they see fit..remember the government exist by the consensus of the governed, it’s important.

Term limits and a national sales tax are two items that can turn this around and help regain the representation that is being stolen from you on a daily basis by these kinds of poli-ticks……..

    • ranger09

You just might have something here, Term Limits, BUT who is going to make this happen, Sure as hell is not going to happen, Do you think these politicians are going to give up their free ride. And one thing for sure the Sheep are not going to make them do this. Heck we dont even make them do the job they were elected to do. Sheep will always be Sheep And just follow the Bell. And its been this way for a very long time.

Egads…..someone PLEASE give Hillary a bottle of shampoo. She looks like she styles her hair with Crisco.

All embassies should leave the middle east. We have no business being over there anyway.

  • ranger09

Folks if you think this problem was put under the carpet, You are right. But keep your eyes on what is happening around the world, This was just one problem, There will be more to come. Just as HC said These People have to come around to our way of thinking. Well a lot of people in the world Do not care for our way of Thinking. So many more things will cause Destruction and killing coming our way, Thanks to people like her.and others.
PEACE what a Word, I wonder what it means.

    • http://gravatar.com/cbgard Carlucci

ranger09, you are spot on. I lived in the middle east for several years. There is no way “they are going to have to come around to our way of thinking”. It will never happen because their lives are dictated by a false and barbaric religion.

      • Robert Smith

I’ll bet they say the same thing about us.

And, with inquisitions, crusades, and “god hates fags” who can dispute it?

Do you really think this Ho from Hell would tell you anything? She is the very cause of the attack on the Ambassador in Benghazi. Her reply on TV when hearing of Moammar Gadhafis death, all the while laughing. “We came, We saw, He died”. Put yourselves in the Libyans shoes. What would you have done to any American you could find?

  • jopa

Hillary Clinton was totally awesome yesterday in the hearings despite all the atacks by Republican after Republican..She sure did lay the groundwork for the Presidency even though she didn’t announce the fact as of today. That Johnson fella from Wiscosin and that other guy Rue Paul I believe from Kentucky sure were made to look like a couple of know nothing fools alond with Grandpa McCain. The GOPers went in trying to score political points and they were shut out big time.Hillary 2016

  • chuckb

it’s quite obvious the senate and congressional hearings gave hillary a pass, their questions were weak, never to the point and the hearings turned out to be a joke.
hillary, rice and barry should be impeached for their coverup and lying to the american people.
hillary is an expert at evasion and lying, however, in the benghazi case, she has nowhere to hide and the hearings turned into a coverup by the senators and congressman.
we cannot continue allowing barry and company to make a shambles out of the law and his refusal to present pertinent documents. the clintons are old hands at these coverups and now they are guiding barry.
contact your congressman and demand they do their job.

    • Di,Cerrillos, NM

I agree. My sweetie calls her Teflon Hillary now. I said that she is a lawyer and a Clinton, we shouldn’t expect clear answers. But the lowball questions were obviously not designed to elicit answers. Weasels all over America are celebrating the triumph of one of their own!
My question: Why haven’t we pulled our embassies and foreign aid from the countries who attack our embassies? Let’s take care of business at home before we try to change the world.

  • TML

““I think we can understand you’re not reading every cable,” Paul said.
And the [Accountability Review Board] made very clear that the level of responsibility for the failures that they outlined was set at the Assistant Secretary level and below,” she said.””

I’m sorry, but if you are in charge, it’s YOUR fault. Simple as that, end of story.

““Paul also asked Clinton about the possibility of the Benghazi attack being related to a CIA-backed scheme to collect weapons in Libya in order to clandestinely arm Syrian rebels.
The Secretary of State suggested that Paul should take up the matter with the CIA.””

Wow, not the least bit of denial. I think I will have to take that for the record.

“We have come a long way in the past four years, and we cannot afford to retreat now,” she told the Senate committee. “When America is absent, especially from unstable environments, there are consequences. Extremism takes root, our interests suffer, and our security at home is threatened.””

Man, I can’t stand this woman. After the utter failures of intervention, both in the history of the United States, and most obviously the past four years, and she still thinks America is like god that without our presence, everything goes to hell. It’s amazing how someone so dishonest, or just plain deluded, could hold such high offices in our country for as long as she has.

    • Jana

She also wanted to know why it matteres now and, that what matters is making sure it never happens again. WHAT???

What matters are the lies and the cover ups that Obama and Clinton are trying to pull off. They think they can do anything even call off support for an Embassy that is under fire and tell the military to stand down and NOT go in to help them and then lie about it to the American people and we are supposed to trust them.

We are supposed to feel sorry for her because she is the one who had to wrap her arms around the families and lie to their faces?

Remember, the Ambassador begged for more security and it was ignored.
Now we know the same people involved in the Benghazi attack were also involved in the Algerian attack.

Why didn’t Clinton and Obama secure the weapons from Qudaffi when they had him ousted? Instead they allowed these weapons to fall into the hands of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Well, its obvious that some gullible, uninformed, Obama and Clinton idolize-rs will not even take notice of such an horrific lack of integrity and responsibility, but there ARE those of us who do!

  • Terry Bateman

Mrs. Clinton failed to provide security to American soil in Libya (The U.S.Consulate in Libya) and then wraps her arms around the relatives of those who died because of
her failure to provide security. Mr. Clinton failed to kill Osama Bin Ladin when he had
the opportunity. Mr. Clinton gutted the CIA of means and resources to protect America
through intelligence and 9-11 was the sad result. Yet adoring Americans treat these
    two like rock stars.
