Bachmann Says ‘Scare Tactics’ Are Being Used In The Debt Ceiling Debate

June 30, 2011 by

Bachmann recently weighed in on the debt ceiling debate.Representative Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) said those warning of economic disaster if the debt ceiling is not raised are using “scare tactics.”

The Congresswoman, who recently announced her intention to seek the Republican nomination for the Presidency, said that if the United States paid down the interest on its debt, it could avoid defaulting on its obligations. However, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told the House Small Business Committee that such a solution is “unworkable.”

Some government officials say that if the debt ceiling is not raised beyond its current standing at $14.3 trillion by Aug. 2, the economic consequences of an American default could be profound.

However, Bachmann said on CBS’ Face the Nation that such claims were false.

“It isn’t true that the government would default on its debt.” The Representative later said, “It is scare tactics.”

Republicans and Democrats have reached an impasse in their negotiations as the GOP balked at the White House’s suggestion that tax hikes might be necessary to solve the budget issue.

“Throwing more tax revenue into the mix is simply not going to produce a desirable result, and it won’t pass,” Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) told CNNMoney.

She’s right. A certain portion of America’s “leaders” never hesitate to use asinine scare tactics when they’re in danger of losing votes/power. It worked very well back in the ’60s, but that day is gone – finally.
It takes a while for common sense and reason to wear down raw stupidity and feel-good insanity, but it’s happening. Picture alinsky’s gift to economics [Geithner], the White House crew, certain members of the House and Senate and selected media whores (male and female) in cheerleader costumes, and you’ll get the idea. Tacky, dumb, predictable and deserving of nothing but national scorn.

    • Elevenarrows

I think you might be overly optimistic. It was just yesterday the fear of a financial crisis had most Americans begging the government “to do something” which turned out to be huge bailouts. From what I can tell, many people I talk to simply aren’t willing to have their daily lives impacted by the Constitution. The gov’t has been highly successful in using schools to create a large herd of sheeple. I, for one, would like the gov’t to NOT fix things. Just protect us from enemies, foreign and domestic, and leave the rest of it to the states. At least that way, we can leave a state that develops Hitler-type aspirations.

      • Jana

        Elevenarrows,
Wow, to me the scary thing is what you said about the people you talk to.

Tell it like it is…in May America exceeded their 14.6 trillion dollar debt limit…it is now almost July….has the sky fallen? Most people like you are so uninformed that they do not know that we have already overspent our credit card to the tune of several billions dollars a day since May. If we allow the debt ceiling to be raised without stopping the insane spending that this administration is doing, we will default on our loans alright…it will be just a matter of time before we are finally forced off the cliff into the abyss. The spending has to stop…taxes cannot make up what raising the debt ceiling will do to this country….wake up.

      • Elevenarrows

I completely agree. Raising the debt ceiling is like giving a teenage girl another one of Daddy’s credit cards because she maxed out the first one. Throwing more money at a problem hasn’t done anything for the gov’t propaganda–I mean, school system. It is disturbing to think that people with such an elementary grasp of economics control our tax revenues…

I actually believe they know exactly what they are doing and are orchestrating another “crisis” to get Americans to give up more freedom. I do agree that we are in a national, financial crisis, but the urgent cry for raising the debt ceiling is bogus. If they were really that concerned about the debt, they would be eliminating every gov’t program that is unconstitutional. Unfortunately, they can’t risk making Americans wean off of handouts or they might lose those votes.

Bachmann said that if the United States paid down the interest on its debt, it could avoid defaulting on its obligations. However, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told the House Small Business Committee that such a solution is “unworkable.” I totaly agree with
Bachmann, if the U.S. paid its debt obligations we would not be in default. When Geithner did not pay his taxes I did not hear anyone say it was “unworkable”. The average American has to make the same decisions daily on the priority of its debt.

    • Elevenarrows

You’re exactly right. Our family has to decide to buy groceries or fuel. Well, without the fuel, Daddy can’t get to work. Without work, we can’t buy anything. I resent the people who have sworn to uphold the Constitution sitting in Washington even considering options that the average American family would consider suicidal. They forget whose money they are playing with….

      • Jana

        Elevenarrows,
They also forget that each one of us has lived out here in the real world and know that when we start overspending we have to stop and cut way back. We have to cut our unnecessary expenditures.
We DON’T cut out the things we need, just the things we would like to have. Our Representatives don’t seem to get it.
We need the police, so they threaten to cut back on law enforcement. We need schools and teachers, so they threaten to cut back on our teachers.
What about their own salaries, and their own fringe benefits such as expense accounts and like Pelosi’s $18,000. dollar a month office back in her home state (that is for just one) even though it is a “green” office.
Why are we paying for abortion clinics in other countries? There is just a lot of pork that can be cut out.

    • James

It’s the interest on our debt that will be defaulted. At present it’s $1.13 billion per day, and any deficit spending will only add to that. It’s impossible to pay down the interest on our national debt. As long as the national debt continues to grow, so will the interest on it.

    • Dons621

And I don’t think I give as much credence to my own mind, because I see myself as being very limited and very flawed, and lacking in knowledge, and wisdom and understanding. .” – Michele Bachmann September 29, 2003.

The only person dumber than Sarah Palin is Michele Bachmann. Everything Bachmann says makes no sense, is stupid, and is all for attention. That’s why I can’t wait for the Palin/Bachmann 2012 ticket.

Although I do not intend to vote for Bachmann, I have to disagree with your assessment of her quote. As a Christian, I understood exactly what she was saying and it wasn’t “dumb”. I know it is difficult for an unconverted person to understand this, but Christians place the authority of Scripture above our own thinking. We recognize that we are not perfect people, but that God is perfect. His ways are higher than our ways. He sees the whole picture; we do not. His mind is infinite. Our minds are finite. I find it refreshing to hear a politician admit her own imperfection. I’ve had enough of the politicians who think they are gods.

    • eddie47d

I like your side of the story Elevenarrows for you always seem informed without going to extremes. I will also not vote for Bachmann and probably for other reasons than your own. She also tried to give life to the “death panel” talk like it was a fact written in stone which it isn’t. She accused Bill Clinton of “celebrating the Oklahoma City bombing” when he was there honoring the dead who lost their lives. If she is that petty over a memorial service then she would be willing to make hay over any issue to stroke herself. She belittled Michelle Obama when she encouraged women to breast feed for the health of the baby. Breast feeding is important for a babies immune system yet Bachmann tried to make hay over that too. That is the creeping sickness from the right that good is bad if they say so. Bachmann also made an outlandish statement(about Democrats of coarse) that school children will be “forced to take field trips to abortion centers” “Once there they will be given exams and if they are pregnant will be forced to have an abortion on the spot”. She spreads misinformation like she is at a Carnival handing out free toys. Even more important Dean Johnson who is a Republican in Minnesota and was the Minority Leader said this:”I don’t think I ever served with anybody who I mistrust more, from either side of the aisle”.

      • Jana

        eddie,
You want to talk about Michelle Obama getting out there and telling the world how to eat and what to eat? She has become the food police.

      • Dons621

Eddie I have a list of 42 people that worked for or were enemy’s of Bill Clinton that goes back to his Tour of duty in Arkansas. Many shot them selves in the back of the head (try it) others had 1 car collisions on lonely roads with a tree, some jumped from tall building, one women who was strangled was rule suicide by a buddy Judge of Slick Willy. And 2 boys fell asleep on the rail road tracks right by THE Dope drop Airstrip of Willies. Need a house to fall on you to get out of your coma.

P.S. Yes, edduh, politicians lie and are known for doing so. But there are those that stand by their convictions no matter what, like BushII and Reagan. I haven’t seen a dem do that in recent history.

    • Diane

Amen, to the self made gods thing. It is sickening the way some think they are high and mighty and they certainly are not in the obedience of Gods word in their haughtiness. A true servant of God and others is humble, for the word of God says; for the lowest among you shall be exalted and the highest shall be made low. God does see the big picture and He is in charge of it, weather people believe it or not. God will help those that humble themselves and ask for His help, those who do not shall not receive.

  • Peter

It boils down to who you want to believe, a congresswoman who has been fighting for the American taxpayer, walks the walk and talks the talk, or, a political party that has no fiscal restraint and whose solution to all our problems is to tax the so called rich. As far as Geithner is concerned, how can anyone believe this dishonest tax cheat.

I admire Bachman because she’s smart, honest and a real fighter for the American people. She puts most Republicans to shame. You can bet that if she were to become President, you wouldn’t find her on a golf course.

If the debt ceiling is not lifted and the US must stop debt spending, what would be the worse case scenario? We shut down the government except for absolutely required spending (such as military pay checks)? We lay off a lot of office workers? We can’t make payments on the interest on our loans and go into default? None of those things sounds too bad to me.

  • Bus

We can either take a little bump in the economic lane from NOT raising the debt ceiling or the bottom will eventually fall out of the whole thing is the Dems continue to spend spend spend. Do you think our creditors would be happier to see us trying to make some effort to control the ridiculous debt or just keep our eyes shut and our heads firmly placed between our cheeks pretending we can somehow get out of this mess without some pain?

  • Raggs

Ya know… I’m REALLY SICK of oblama and his BS lies!

  • cerebus23

Cut out obamacare that would start saving money now, could axe social security and medicare, considering that they will cost about 4 trillion to try and fix they are not going to last much longer anyway.

Bottom line it is long beyond time that congress starts working for the people they are supposed to be serving, it is time to cut government spending, start moving towards privitazation, start getting our debt under control, because time is running out. and spending more money will not do anything but hasten the end, nevermind printing more money and inflating our economy more.

Thing that gets blushed over too much in politics these days, is who is going to pay for all this? We cannot afford what they have done to the country now and they want more rope to hang us? Or rather hang your children and grandchildren, but i think it is far too late to turn this ship around anyway.

And how about the press looking more at the current state of europes flirtation with communist social spending and how that has worked out for them? It is all over the news communist social spending does not work ever, and when the cookie crumbles it is never pretty. Riots violence looting, we are not too far off from seeing our whole nation descend into all this when our economy completely collapses. Many of the states are already broke, nevermind when the usd is utterly valueless virtually overnight the panic and fallout will make what is happening in europe seem tame.

  • Thinking About

In starting to pay down the debt Michele should return to tax payers handouts to LLC farm of which she claimed on her tax return and the “training” money her husband’s clinic received. These small facts are just a start. I don’t care if someone buys a jet just don’t count on American taxpayers to help pay for it. This is welfare and should be stopped. We can not afford to keep spending money like this. In 2000 the U s was headed in the right direction and the train derailed. It was 8 years of spend spend spend. A war of choice spent billions of money which could been place towards repairing our infrastructure which began with Eisenhower and we blew it in Iraq. I am tired of handouts and wasteful spending and a Congress wasting time and money not doing their job.

    • Jana

      Thinking about it,
Give some sources for your lies and misinformation.

      • http://naver samurai

Now we both know that if a lib gave sources, they would be caught in the lies they have told. Keep up the good fight, fellow patriot! FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

        • eddie47d

Now if a Conservative says the exact same thing about wasteful spending you would claim that person to be a hero to your cause. Yet when there is debt growing out the ears and economic troubles coming from the right it all falls on those deaf ears. That is where Conservatives can be very dishonest. Realize that and the truth can really set you free. If not then you are pandering to the right and yes I have mistakenly pandered to both the left and right. That’s life and the struggle to find out who is more right will continue.

          • http://naver samurai

Asking someone for sources isn’t accusing someone of lying and you know it. Though it is true that our government does spend on things never authorized by our Constitution (Welfare, food stamps, medicaid, etc.), but that has nothing to do with right or left politics. It has to do with this country getting away from our Christian founding, but it seems that you have no way in understanding that. FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

Thinking about it, you are as full of —– Kenyan goat, It was her in-laws who got the CRP subsidizes, not her and her husband As for the subsidizes her husband clinic get subsidizes, that is what Medicare is which after doing a job, he needs to be paid. Thank your marxist/communist dumbocrats for starting that worthless program. As fort heading the right way under Whorehound Clinton, you are talking out you rear! clinton and his whores changed the accounting from accrul to cash, to get better numbers, and when he left he left the USA in millions in debt. As for spending, it is a MO of dumbcrap pukes to cut the military, to make it look good on paper, and the next Pres. has to rebuild it. I didn’t alway like Bush but the 4.5% unemployment was sure better than 24% unemployment now, even after the 1 trillion dollar stimulas program for his union —- and Wall Street tax cheats and Soros queers.

Bachmann listed the LLC income on her income tax so if you don’t like this fact you will have to learn to live with it. As far as the Clinton administration heading in the right direction perhaps it was because of Republician Congress. It does not matter who set up the welfare payments for training by Bachmann standards they are wrong and I don’t agree with any of them. You must suck the blood out of the government and think welfare is great. It is about the free market and don’t expect redistribution of wealth by corporate welfare.

Speaker of the house is in the emergency line for president, so i belive they are required to take air force transport.

I do hope someday you will on your own tell the difference between a lie and the truth. Have a nice 4th.

    Dear Mr. Livingston,

I have always been under the rule called PRODUCTIVITY will raise revenue. I’m a former farmer and school teacher. In farming we worked hard to produce good crops in order to bring in revenue to keep the debt level down. In teaching I worked hard to produce students that scored high on the ACT, SAT and State Test. In so doing my job was secure. Now we have a gov’t that thinks raising taxes or cutting spending is the answer to our country’s economic woes. Let me make this suggestion. DRILL BABY DRILL !!!! OPEN UP THE FERTILE SOIL TO FARMING ONCE AGAIN IN THE SAN YAKINE. To Hell with the environmentalists. They alone have put us in this delemma. They must be defeated but it is probably too late. Refuse to listen to their lobiests. Why don’t I ever hear about PRODUCTIVITY???? Two major commodities and they are ignored. If this is not addressed then we deserve a clataclysmic colapse. And I am not too stupid to know about the Trilateral Commission and the Builder-Group Commission. The politicians want our colapse and the boarders open. It is called ONE WORLD GOV’T and the ONE WORLD BANK. This has been the dream of politicians since way back before F. Roosevelt. Our soverignty is almost gone and soon will be a thing of the past. This is their desire. We have stood by and let Greedy Morons take us down. God Help us.

    • Diane

Sir, you are absolutely right, thank you for boldly saying this. The only thing I will add is that the Godlessness that is being promoted by these groups and leaders is the main reason that they are gaining any ground in their pursuit of our destruction. As this Nation allows un-Godly powers to control our Courts, our Schools, our seats in Government and even in our places of worship, we can not expect God to bless this Nation. Evil is gaining control because the Nation has turned from God and His will. A Nation that turns from God can not be blessed by God. Those who chose to trust in God can and will be, even when the Nation is not.

I decided to share this today because it is a part of our History that was our greatness; and remembering this is encouraging.
Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought fourth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
Now we are engaged in a great and civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting place for those who resting-place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate-we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us, the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us-that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion-that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain; that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom; and that Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

    Abraham Lincoln, Gettysburg address.

I know this is not what the 4th is about, but without the 4th we would not have had this great battle for the proposition that all men are created equal. Something only God can give and we also would not be a nation of the people, by the people and for the people. It is up to us to keep it, God help us do that until Jesus returns. Amen.

      AMEN
