Bachmann Creates Tea Party Caucus, GOP Reluctant To Join

Bachmann Creates Tea Party Caucus, GOP Reluctant To JoinRepresentative Michelle Bachmann (R-Minn.) said on Monday that the House Administration Committee had approved her request to create an official Tea Party caucus.

Although the congressional membership organization is not eligible to receive any Federal funding, Bachmann plans to use the caucus to push the ideologies of "fiscal responsibility, adherence to the Constitution and limited government."

"This caucus will espouse the timeless principles of our founding, principles that all members of Congress have sworn to uphold," she said. "The American people are doing their part and making their voices heard and this caucus will prove that there are some here in Washington willing to listen."

However, as of Tuesday, only Representative Mike Pence (R-Ind.) had expressed his desire to join the caucus, leading many political pundits to wonder whether the NAACP’s recent claims of racism have marred the conservative organization’s reputation in Washington.

Meanwhile, Representative Walt Minnick—an Idaho Democrat known for his fiscally conservative views—rejected the Tea Party’s endorsement earlier this week after originally accepting it in April, the Huffington Post reports.

Minnick, whose spokesman said he was reluctant to accept the endorsement from the beginning, rebuked the Tea Party after reading a racist blog authored by one of the organization’s members, Mark Williams.
