Baby Born During College’s Emergency Preparedness Training

FRESNO, Calif. (UPI) — Officials at a California college said a student gave birth on a bench right outside of the building where they were receiving emergency preparedness training.

Administrators at West Hills College Lemoore in Fresno said they were undergoing Incident Command System training to learn how to handle emergency situations on campus Oct. 18 when student Jessylyn Domingo gave birth on a campus bench outside the building, KFSN-TV, Fresno, reported Thursday.

“Incidentally, we were going through our ICS training for our next drill, and when we heard that someone was having a baby on campus, we all thought it was part of the planning,” said Don Warkentin, president of WHCL. “To say the least, we were definitely surprised that it was the real deal. We are so thankful that it all went well and that our staff responded very professionally.”

Domingo said she was assisted by a man on his way to the training.

“It was just crazy,” said Domingo. “The guy, I’m grateful whoever he was. He was the first one to come help me besides my mom. She just pulled up literally seconds after the baby came out and literally seconds after that other guy arrived.”

The man was Charles Freeman, a registered nurse and district director of health careers.

He was alerted to the situation by Leo Orange, a learning skills program assistant.

“I was really impressed with the mother,” said Freeman. “She was really calm and had a sense of humor.”

Baby Landen Alexander weighed 7 pounds, 14 ounces and was 21 inches long at birth.
