US Embassy in Mexico Unaware of ATF Gun Sting

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico was kept in the dark about a sting operation that fed American guns into the country, a cable revealed Monday shows. In the July 2010 cable, quoted by the Los Angeles Times, the embassy advised the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to focus on arresting small-time Mexican gun traffickers living legally in the United States rather than drug cartels.

Norway shooting suspect claims cells exist; death toll falls

The suspect in the attacks in downtown Oslo, Norway, and an island admitted carrying out the atrocities and claimed to work with two other cells, a judge said. After a closed-door hearing Monday, Judge Kim Heger said Anders Behring Breivik acknowledged carrying out the attacks — a bomb blast in downtown Oslo and a shooting spree nearby on Utoya Island — but said the attacks were necessary to prevent the “colonization” of Norway by Muslims, CNN reported.
