As Shutdown Looms, Capitol Hill Freaks Out

As the government shutdown fiasco continued Monday, Capitol Hill Democrats and some Republicans embraced increasingly harsh language to describe the tactics used by GOP conservatives attempting to defund Obamacare in return for passage of a government funding bill.

Representative Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) called conservative members of his Party in the House “lemmings with suicide vests” for their efforts to throttle funding for the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

They have to be more than just a lemming. Because jumping to your death is not enough,” he said.

“You have this group saying somehow if you’re not with them, you’re with Obamcare. If you’re not with their plan — exactly what they want to do, you’re with Obamcare. It’s getting a little old,” he said.

Senator Harry Reid (D-Calif.) told reporters Monday that the Senate would not allow a short-term, one-week continuing resolution to be passed in order to give lawmakers more time to come to an agreement because it would be akin to running the government like that of a banana republic.

“If we can’t pass this, we’re only truly entering a banana republican mindset,” Reid said at a press conference after the Senate tabled the House’s continuing resolution postponing the ACA for one year.

The Senate sent the House a “clean” continuing resolution without the language to postpone Obamacare. Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) indicated that he would not allow a vote on that bill.

“This is what we look at other countries doing,” Reid said. “The United States, we’re going to be funding the government for a week, ten days at a time — not so good.”

Reid also called GOP lawmakers “bullies” who should “get a life.”

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney used a number of rhetorical tactics to attack conservatives Monday— at one point, even accusing the lawmakers of extortion.

The press secretary also regurgitated Democratic assertions that anti-Obamacare Republicans are simply mean-spirited people who would like to see millions of Americans suffer.

“One might surmise that the extreme agita that you see among Republicans right now over the Affordable Care Act and Obamacare is a direct result of the fact that, beginning tomorrow, there is a concrete development that means that millions of Americans for the first time will be able to sign up for that health insurance,” Carney said.

And President Barack Obama added his two cents Monday evening, a mere seven hours before the possible shutdown would take effect accusing conservatives of being at the “height of irresponsibility.”

“One faction of one party, in one house of Congress, in one branch of government, doesn’t get to shut down the entire government just to refight an election,” Obama said.

“My hope and expectation is that in the 11th hour once again that Congress will choose to do the right thing,” the President concluded.

“You have to be dumb enough to think it’s important” – Eugene McCarthy

There have been several “shutdowns”, and nothing much happened. The only people trying to scare us with the threat of “government shutdown” are the only ones afraid of it.

This is a game of chicken, and I and my fellow citizens have already won. Please shut it down, for as long as you can stand it.

    • smilee

Obamacare will not be defunded or delayed and all will lose

      • Don 2

Go ahead, shut down the government! Only non-essential services will be affected, which asks the question: “Why does the federal government have non-essential services in the first place?”

        • vicki

And we would have a current list of non-essential services to use to trim the budget that eventually might get written.

        • JanelleHumbert

I love that question! Did you post that earlier or another site? I posted it on another couple of sites, but did not take credit for it. Well received, Don2. Thought you should know.

          • Don 2

I think that I saw it recently either on Godfather Politics or Glenn Beck, but it’s an old statement and usually worded: “which ‘begs’ the question:”

        • Robert Messmer

Yes and even non-essential employees in essential services are being sent home. So since they are not essential, other than that they are union members, why do they have jobs there?

        • Don 2

Clearly, you’re being here is non-essential!

          • Dave

More of that conservative humor when I put holes in your arguements.

          • Don 2

The V.A. is funded a year in advance. There will be no disruption in the care that veterans receive at the V.A. facilities.

          • Don 2

The V.A. is funded a year in advance as a protection for times exactly like this. No veterans will be denied care.

It’s not that you put holes in an argument. It’s that you outright lie!

  • Debbie Hogan Tate

There have been 17 government shutdowns and funding gaps since 1976, Has anybody really noticed them? SHUT IT DOWN!

    • Sig

      I never felt a thing.

      • Robert Messmer

Whoa there feller. You is preaching “trickle down economics” which all you Big Government is best types have always said didn’t work.

      • Don 2

The federal government had unfunded liabilities in 2011 exceeding $86.8 trillion, or 550% of the GDP which includes Social Security, Medicare, and federal employees’ future retirement benefits, not counting the new additional unfunded liabilities of Obamacare. There is not enough money in the entire world to pay America’s debt.

The federal government takes in $2.7 trillion dollars a year, and all of that has already been spent this year. Every dollar the federal government spends for the remainder of 2013 is borrowed, and the stock market is only kept going by the government printing money 24/7 and pumping it into the market. When the feds stop printing, the market goes boom.

You want to talk about a shutdown? It’s coming!

Who knew…..the folks who didn’t exist are now being polled for opinions about them. And credited for taking over the House……my, for a bunch of people who are also targeted by the IRS who don’t exist, that is quite a coup.

    • Don 2

The dems will always tell you who they’re afraid of. The more that the dems attack them, the more afraid of them they are. What’s a matter flashy, did your IRS muzzle get neutered for 2014?

      • Don 2

Must be a great plan Dave. The unions don’t want it. Congress doesn’t want it for themselves of their staffers. Businesses don’t want it. The Supreme Court doesn’t want it. The people don’t want it.

Money going to the Muslim Brotherhood, Fast and Furious, hell they lost a bunch of money at the IRS! Can’t find it. This government is corrupt, don’t you understand?

          • Rodhea

Oh Dave, c’mon…you name the spending since you are such a know-it-all. Tell us how we got from 400 billion dollar deficits to 1.2 trillion dollar deficits. Educate us on how the deficit hasn’t tripled. I can’t wait to hear you explain how Jana is wrong. Other than using the word debt instead of deficit that is ;)

          • IsThisAmerica

Apparently mr. know it all dave still has his head buried somewhere. As far as I’m concerned he is just a moot point. He would argue the earth is flat. Not worth my time anymore.

          • Robert Messmer

AS Obamacare proved, the GOP could not have stopped Obama from eliminating and reversing the Bush Tax Cuts. Not one Republican voted to pass the law but it still passed.

          • Don 2

85% of Americans were happy with their healthcare before Obamacare. Why did the Democrats have to screw with their healthcare plans, instead of coming up with a program for just those w/o insurance. Even after Obamacare is implemented, there will still be an estimated 10 million or more w/o insurance.

          • Merle Dickey

an dseveral million of those are children!

          • Adolf Schmidt

Where does the the money come from to pay the premiums! Over 300 companies and counting are making adjustments that will affect the workforce and economy adversely! They are reducing full time employment and replacing those with part time and temp. employees just to dodge the increased cost of premiums! The country is adding jobs at a snails pace, with 80% of those jobs being minimum wage or part time already! We need some kind of universal health care, but not something so ill conceived. The economy is extremely fragile at this point, and this will damage any improvement, as little as it has been for most! This is the lowest work force participation since the depression! This will not end well!,

        • Don 2

I agree that Obamacare and keeping the government running have nothing to do with each other. So why is Barack “my-way-or-the-highway” Obama going to shut down the government if he doesn’t get Obamacare funded?

          • Don 2

Obamacare is illegal. It did not originate in the House of Representatives.

          • Jana

            Temper temper!!!
It is too Obama’s fault. He won’t NEGOTIATE ANYTHING. He never negotiated anything about the bill EVER it was the DEMOCRATS WAY or the highway all of the time. Talk about hostage taking! We were all hostages.
Only the low information voters are for this. And that speaks volumes about you!

          • Jana

            He didn’t. It is coming.

          • Robert Messmer

Yes sir Mayor Bloomberg! “We need a serious review …and our lifestyle…”

          • Robert Messmer

Gee Dave how about allowing the citizens to make their own decisions? The government is not supposed to be doing any “review” of our lifestyle.

          • IsThisAmerica

If it is such a great law then why did obummer change it later to accomadate congress, IRS, and everyone else on the hill, along with big business, so they wouldn’t have to take it? The rest of us are being forced to take it. No this is a very bad law.

        • Merle Dickey

ACA will be hard to repeal if it is allowed to go in untouched. Even if there is a republican win in 2016. What I read of it( still reading) doesn’t do seniors much good after 75 especially and they are taking money (again) out of medicare and not covering several illnesses. The premiums for younger folks will be pretty high once it gets going. My Dr. said there will be long waits to get in to see a Dr. I would like to know who exactly wrote this thing . Because they should certainly have to be on it.

        • IsThisAmerica

Not a bad law? I lost my Dr over this insane law. He no longer takes any kind of insureance now.

          • Jana

I am so sorry to hear that. Good luck finding another good Dr. And I do mean that in all earnestness.

Thos freak couldn’t make a pimple on a real president’s ass.

      • Dave

Tell that to my 14 employees who are losing their company provided healthcare benefits, that covered employees and dependants, to go on obamacare! I think I now have 14 employees who will be voting for the conservative candidate in the next elections!

        • Jana

          The RealDon2.

Sad that you have a copy cat namer on this thread. He isn’t even smart enough to have his own name, he has to use your name to try and confuse people. This just shows how devious he is and how you cannot trust anything he says.

      • merryinfidel

Fear that people will like it has absolutely nothing to do with the Republicans resistance to obamacare. They know, without question, that it will be an abysmal failure and they are merely trying to stop the catastrophic damage it will cause to the greatest healthcare system on the planet. It’s a difficult task as most liberal democrats are such uninformed, narrow minded buffoons.

      • Barakolips

Dream on, if this disaster goes through it will do nothing but help the conservative vote. We should just let it run its course and take back the White House in 2016 but as merryinfidel below stated, we need to stop it before anymore damage is done to the fragile economy, You know, the economy, that thing Oeffinbama should be focusing on rather than a starry eyed disaster of a health care bill!!!!!!!!!

      • IsThisAmerica

It’s very apparent you have no idea what you are talking about. But that’s the way it is with liberal, democrats. All they know is corruption, lies and are racists. Then they blame everyone else for their shortcomings.

      • Dawn Garland

this is so true, if the dems are afraid of you-they will call you names, and LIE to try to make you look bad–the media is in bed with the liberals so they help them with the smear campaigns. our president isn’t very presidential, he throws little hissy fits when he doenst get his way, he is like a school yard bully…who has to call names and make up lies so that he looks good—and guess what….he STILL DOESN’T LOOK GOOD!

    • Robert Messmer

So then the Tea Party should “endorse” the Democrat candidates. LOL

    • Dawn Garland

flashy–it seems you are making up your own numbers–good try though.

  • JanelleHumbert

Not that you will receive an honest answer from your reps, but you might inquire from them what services will affect them personally. I tend to agree with the quote ” Politicians should be changed as frequently as
diapers and for the same reason.”

    • JanelleHumbert

They will never agree to that. Ever. You must have noticed that not a one of them has refused their ACA exemption. Or any other staffer or federal worker.
It is our job, Dave. Two terms for reps and one for senators, then out. Remember what this country fought for in the first place. I know you do!

      • Don 2

You can’t keep it when employers drop you because it is cheaper for them to send employees to the exchanges.

You can’t keep your doctor when he decides not to accept the government underpayment for his time and service.

You can’t keep your doctor when he gets out of the business because it is no longer worthwhile and there is too much government paperwork to deal with.

Send senators, representatives, staffers, and supreme court justices to the exchanges. If it’s good enough for the goose, it’s good enough for the gander. The staffers helped write Obamacare, now eat it!

When taxpayers pay 75% of the Reps, Senators, and staffers cost for their healthcare, it is an exemption. Some of these people make over $174,000.00 per year. Why should the taxpayers have to pay 75% of their cost for them?

      • JanelleHumbert

Dave, companies are cutting hours in record numbers to under thirty to avoid the ACA and canceling family benefits. Beyond that, however, I find the idea of this government intrusion appalling. Apparently they don’t have enough to do. And their track record into any business is a train wreck. Why in heaven’s name would you trust any group who can’t keep themselves to only spend what tax dollars they have with your healthcare ?
Would you give them control of your finances?

        • JanelleHumbert

At my age, I remember catastrophic insurance only. Everything else was pay as you use. It worked rather well. It actually works now. Any medical bill you choose to pay for is at least 50-60% less than insurance. And Doctors are willing to work with good faith efforts to set up no interest payment systems. It might help if you lose the chip off your shoulder, Don2.

          • garygerke

            EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!

        • Don 2

“The law limits how much insurance firms can fleece you.”

Obama postponed for a year, the maximum deductible amount for those on the ACA. In essence, there in no maximum deductible amount that a person can be charged.

  • Don 2

You got that right…..Nov can’t come soon enough…..neither can Nov 2016.

This ‘No Hope & All Out of Change’ crap has really grown old.

    • Don 2

Don’t worry, the public is sick and tired of that lying old AC/DC bag(Barack Obama in a pant suit).

      • Don 2

Dream on pal. Ted Cruz and Rand Paul are looking like good prospects for 2016.

Obama has done absolutely nothing for blacks in the job market, or anyone else for that matter, unless you want to count low-paying part-time 29 hour/week service jobs without healthcare. Big whoop!

        • Don 2

Stopping Obamacare would help the economy. Approving the XL pipeline would help the economy. Reeling in the runaway EPA would help the economy. Opening public lands to drilling for oil and natural gas would help the economy. Reducing corporate taxes would help the economy. All things under Dumocrat Barack Obama’s control, not the GOP.

          • Adolf Schmidt

Dave, you ever wonder why we are producing, and exporting, more oil than anytime in history? Yet we are still importing oil from OPEC, and gas is still over $3.00 a gallon! Gas would be back to $2.00 a gallon but the gov. needs the import and export tax! The gov. makes 3 1/2 times the money off of oil than the big oil companies do! We need to keep our own oil and reduce OPEC imports! Then this administration would have to raise the tax on gas and you could see what kind of crap they are pulling!

        • Merle Dickey

He has done anything he wants without the GOPs vote, with his executive powers!

“As democracy is perfected, the office of the President represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last and the White House will be occupied by a downright fool and complete narcissistic moron.”

What are you people scared of?
      To name a few:

      A. What it will do to the economy in the mean time.

      B. We have an extortionist and even worse for a President that goes around changing the laws that is not his place to do so.

      C. Obama also gives exemptions and it is NOT his place to do so.
      D. Once this stupid expensive law goes into effect its almost impossible to correct it or stop it like taxes, oh yes, it actually WAS deemed a tax.

      • Don 2

You mean, when Justice Roberts actually re-wrote the law in order to be able to make a case for deciding its constitutionality? The Roberts court legacy will be right down there in the gutter with the Obama legacy, neither one respected.

Again as you said before and I quote,” Oh boy… so many stupid remarks in one post….”

Exactly Don2!…I say it is also b.s. that they will ‘shut down’ the govt…it is only non-essential services and they have pulled this crap before! To reverse-parrot the lamestream media: they will Never shut the govt down…you know why?…because, “What if it Worked!?”

    • Jana

  • Fed-up!

Does this guy live on a different planet? The country is proceeding on a rapid pace towards coming apart at the seams, and you seem to be standing on the side to be a cheerleader!
As far as I’m concerned, shut it down! Any president who will negotiate with ANYONE else in the world, about far, far more dangerous subjects (nuclear capabilities, chemical weapons, etc., take your pick!) but refuses to negotiate with a house of representatives (who, BTW, were re-elected in 2012) over his “signature” piece of legislation, when a significant majority of the American population is opposed to his “signature” bill, has to be bit off kilter!
Three cheers for the extremists! Maybe we need more of that in DC, instead of the time tested practice of “go along to get along”. Would you support that practice in case of a rape? I hope not! But this is a raping of a large portion of the American public who believes firmly that it is bad policy, and bad law in it’s present incarnation. So I, persoanlly cheer on those congress persons who stand by their committment to defund, delay and get this bad piece of legislation off the plates of the American middle class!
In a Constitutional Republic, Tyranny of the Majority is a constant reality!

      northbrook writes:

      “Well Vicki,
The floor is yours… Please tell me how to reduce the rise of HC if we don’t all pay into the system,”

Why thank you NC. I will.

Remove the government interference with health insurance and allow companies to sell in any state.

Now to your example. If the supply of money in an industry increases (by your forcing everyone to pay into the “system” (actually industry) ) Healthcare costs will obviously rise. More money to spend on healthcare means that those who provide healthcare can get more of that money.

Supply / Demand. It is an immutable law of nature.

      • vicki

Of course you are NOT interested in price if you are really ill. THAT is why you buy insurance BEFORE you get ill. They compete to keep the price down. Of course insurance of any type drives up the amount of money available for HealthCARE providers to demand. Hence my 2nd paragraph.

The critical difference between my solution and obamacare remains INDIVIDUAL choice and consent.

Mine acknowledges your right to get insurance. Or not.

  • Rodhea

Show us the facts on your 3T dollar war claim Dave. I know you can’t, but humor me and at least try. And then tell us how this healthcare law will get a handle on healthcare costs instead of making them rise higher and higher. That should be good for a laugh too. Waiting!

    • Robert Messmer

Actually could have saved that money if the Democrats that were in Congress at the time had voted against him. President Bush never threatened to start a war even if Congress told him no. But 58% of the Democratic Senators said oh hell yes let’s go to war. Including Hilary “What Difference Does It Make” Clinton. They’re just teed off cause it was the first war, of any note, in almost a century that they weren’t responsible for. Wilson’s War WWI, Roosevelt’s War WWII, Truman’s War Korea, JFK/LBJ’s War Vietnam.

      • Robert Messmer

LOL wasn’t even enough to overcome the majority of Democrats.

To those that criticize the GOP for holding the government to a responsible budget and having fair treatment under ACA I say better a lemming than a politician looking to hold onto their job. All politicians should be required to live by the laws they pass no exceptions. Maybe then we would not face laws like the ACA.

Dave…let’s see how your analysis holds up. You say it is irresponsible to try to repeal or defund a piece of legislation (the law) just because you don’t agree with it. So how does your position hold water after Mr. Obama refused to enforce the Defense of Marriage Act as it was the law-of-the-land. He just didn’t agree with it. And, as the chief executive he is bound by law to uphold the laws of the land. Sound familiar. Congress has the Constitutional right to vote on a repeal or defunding of any piece of legislation…you know….since they have the right to create, amend or repeal laws and are the branch of government that makes the budget (as long as you aren’t in the current Senate controlled by Democrats which hasn’t passed a budget for several years now).

Speaking of how the process is supposed to work, why has the President “amended” the law by fiat in granting special privileges to congress and not implementing the law in full as passed by the Democrats in both houses of Congress. Or does the fact that not one Republican voted for it mean that the proper procedures don’t have to be followed?

  • Robert Messmer

And the biggest increases have been under Obama.

Sorry didn’t see the change of gears from the Obama and GOP to review as individual citizens.

LOL have to love the way you think. GOP Senators cast their votes and it is only groupthink but when Democrat Senators cast their votes it is a sign of mature and sincere voting of their conscience. Even if they have to say to hell with their constituents when they vote.

  • Don 2

Hey, the GOP passed a bill to keep the government running. It was Dinghy Harry and the Senate, per Obama, who shut the government down.
