As Occupy Wall Street Grows, Politicians Try To Gain Favor Within Movement

October 6, 2011 by

As Occupy Wall Street Grows, Politicians Try To Gain Favor Within MovementWashington lawmakers, noticing the growing momentum of the Occupy Wall Street protests that spread Thursday to the Capitol, are now making an effort to embrace the movement. Many Democrats are now calling it the “Tea Party of the left.”

According to The Hill , several liberal lawmakers, including many in the Congressional Black Caucus, have offered support for the movement.

“We share the anger and frustration of so many Americans who have seen the enormous toll that an unchecked Wall Street has taken on the overwhelming majority of Americans while benefiting the super-wealthy,” Reps. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.) and Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) said in a joint statement. “We join the calls for corporate accountability and expanded middle-class opportunity.”

While the movement has been supported by many Democrats, some Republicans, including Presidential candidate Herman Cain, say that the idea behind the protest is against traditional American values.

“Don’t be jealous, don’t be envious,” Cain said of the protestors at a Florida book signing, according to CNBC. “I don’t have much patience for someone who does not want to achieve their American dream the old-fashioned way.”

Cain also said that the protestors were advocating redistribution of wealth, and that they should “go figure out what America is about.” Mitt Romney has offered similar sentiments, saying that the protests were a form of class warfare.

Ron Paul has been sympathetic of the protestors and their message, but says they need to take it to the Federal Reserve where he believes corruption between government and Wall Street begins.

The protests moved into Washington D.C. today, and the protestors have taken the following pledge  announcing the reasons for the movement:

“I pledge that if any U.S. troops, contractors, or mercenaries remain in Afghanistan on Thursday, October 6, 2011, as that criminal occupation goes into its 11th year, I will commit to being in Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C., with others on that day with the intention of making it our Tahrir Square, Cairo, our Madison, Wisconsin, where we will NONVIOLENTLY resist the corporate machine to demand that our resources are invested in human needs and environmental protection instead of war and exploitation. We can do this together. We will be the beginning.”

Let us see…Tea Party of the left…hmmm… OWS wants to grow govt hand outs and more govt intervention, TEA wants to end unConstitutional welfare get govt out of the way of small businesses. OWS is now backed by union thugs with a bunch of unorganized college kids pretending its 1960 and TEA remains a loosely affiliated grass roots movement of conservative Americans. Apparently OWS does not understand ballot boxes as they threaten to hang out until demands are met, while TEA rallies encourage voters to register and put Constitutional thinkers in office. Well, I guess you could compare the two…

    • Jana

      Jeep,
      You said it so well.
Of course they are the TEA Party of the left. Everything the left does like this is despicable.
You watch, when they leave, there will be a humongous mess. When the TEA Party left it was clean. We never heard them say of the TEA Party that they stunk like unwashed bodies (uncleanliness). They never said the area they were in stunk like urine etc. More uncleanliness.
The people of the TEA Party were pretty much in one accord, these unkempt people have no real idea of what they are even doing there. Now the Unions have gotten involved. You know, the professional protesters.
How very unproud of them their parents must be. They can’t get a job and they can’t even get the protest right.

Jana, had it not been for unions you may have been a child laborer working for less than minimum wage. What was said about the Tea Party and their racist signs with the witch doctor and the Hitler monikers the message was crystal clear no matter how they tried to clean it up. Besides how many of those idiots had jobs? Most followed Dick Army and Freedom works from city to city. Some are so quick to judge our young people and cast them in a negative light. Dick Cheney was not a hippie but he was a draft dodger. Russ Limbaugh was not a Hippie but he too was a draft dodger. How very unproud your parents must be of you to denounce an american right to protest.

        • Jana

          ron,
I never denounced anyone’s right to protest. How disappointed your parents must be that you failed reading comprehension!
What I do denounce is their having to be filthy while doing it.I also would like to know what it is that they are standing for. Everyone seems to have a different opinion.
Unions used to be a good thing, but they have long lost their goodness.
I have an Uncle that is in the Union. He holds an office in the union. I have heard way too much from him about how great his union is, but he actually scares me. The union is his god and it can do nothing wrong. I DO NOT agree with his ideals or ideologies. One thing I can say for certain, he isn’t a happy man he is mad all of the time at every one else who doesn’t agree with him. Hmm does this sound a little familiar to you?

          • Jana

            ron,
By the way, there were no racists signs in the TEA Party, there were references to Hitler I will agree with that, but they were saying they didn’t want Hitler’s tactics to be used. Most of the people of the TEA Party were and are responsible adults who were peaceful and CLEAN. NO ARRESTS were made. They have already been arresting these protesters.
By the way, you just can’t get by without calling names can you? Just because you don’t like the TEA Party people you don’t have to call them idiots. I haven’t called these young protesters idiots, so you might just lablel them and yourself with your own words.

Jeep here’s the deal. First they want the criminals who caused the collapse of the banks and Wall Street to face the criminal justice system. You know the guys that ask for a bail out but have yet to create the jobs Boehner and Cantor keep looking for. Second, if it had not been for those college kids of the sixties in some cases putting their lives on the line there would be many more Emit Tills. Had it not been for those liberal minded people (not necessarily democrat or republican) this country would have continued to waste our brave soldiers lives in Viet Nam. So while Herman Cain tries to gain support with conservatives the world moves on and OWS continues. The difference between OWS and the Tea Party is OWS will not sell out and vote against their own self-interest as the Tea Party continues to do today. Or should I say Dick Army, S. Pallin, and M. Bachman’s Tea Party. All are dam near millionaires. Money made off the backs of the Tea Party.

How did America create so many thin-skinned wimps who think their political icons will do the right thing once they get power? People, THE true test of character is POWER. By now, you should have a good idea of Obummer’s many weaknesses – and his very FEW strengths.
When we elect someone, we are GAMBLING that they won’t go the way of the career strumpet. Most surrender to the lure of easy money, titles and instant access to a pimped-out, ho bag media.
It is very dangerous to try and combine the weakness of the human heart with the temptation of a lifestyle that we mere citizens will never have. I have no reason to think that the Wall Street herd will do anything positive.
And why would I say that? It is ILLOGICAL to expect large numbers of people to come together unless their motivation has been pre-scripted. Contrary to what we’re being told, this Wall Street orgy is NOT a grassroots movement. The money that’s being poured into that “group hug” festival is designed to further dumb-down America and make America’s REAL grassroots movement take the rap for it.
Most of those young people would not know the difference between an honest demonstration and a staged charade if they had the printer’s version of the tech manual. Their sincerity is purchased, hyped gibberish, and their “benefactors” are a ravening trollops.
Expect nothing good to come from this farce. And, when it comes to making comparisons between America’s real grassroots movement and this pathetic circus, apples and oranges have more in common. The soul of this scripted aberration has been bought and paid for by people who hate America. Let them whiz and moan. Those few who have jobs need to be reminded that in a country where jobs are meaningless to the White House mob, they CAN be replaced with people who WANT to work.
Caring, concerned people, my arse. Place your bets, people. This
twisted, effing race is scripted, the players are clueless and the gamblers who expect to ‘win’ this bread-and-circuses monstrosity showed their true colors years ago.
