Ariz. dust storm causes pileups

TUCSON, Oct. 4 (UPI) — An intense dust storm that reduced visibility to zero Tuesday caused three major pileups in Arizona that left at least one person dead, authorities said.

Two chain-reaction crashes involving 16 vehicles occurred about 12:15 p.m. on Interstate 10 near Picacho Peak, the Tucson Sentinel reported.

“There is one confirmed fatality and two additional victims with life threatening injuries,” said Public Safety Department spokesman Bart Graves, who earlier had said at least 15 people were thought to have been seriously injured.

Another pileup on I-10 about 1:45 p.m. near Casa Grande, involving eight vehicles, also closed the highway.

“To my knowledge no one involved in this crash has life threatening injuries,” Graves said.

The interstate was closed in both directions in the vicinity of the crashes.
