Arginine And Antioxidant Supplements May Help Improve Exercise Capacity In Elderly People

Arginine and antioxidant supplements may help improve exercise capacity in elderly people As people age their ability to exercise for extended periods of time slowly diminishes. Fortunately, results of a new University of California study suggest that taking daily arginine and antioxidant supplements can help compensate for the loss of exercise capacity by enhancing a person’s anaerobic threshold, which is the amount of exercise that needs to be done before lactic acid begins to accumulate in the blood.

For the study, lead author Zhaoping Li and her colleagues from the university recruited 16 active male cyclists between the ages of 50 and 73, and randomly assigned them to take either a mix of arginine and antioxidant supplements or dummy placebo tablets.

After only one week of taking the nutritional supplements, the study group experienced a 16.7 percent increase in anaerobic threshold. In contrast, the threshold of the control group did not significantly alter.

"A dietary supplement that increases exercise capacity might help to preserve physical fitness by optimizing performance and improving general health and well-being in older people," said Li.

She concluded that findings suggest "a potential role of arginine and antioxidant supplementation in improving exercise performance in elderly."

    arginine and CoQ10, along with 3 miles of vigorous walking, per day (4 miles per hour) have significantly dropped my blood pressure.
    I started at 160 over 100 and dropped to 126 over 84 in three weeks!!

    yes, I have been taking L-Arginine and several sources of anti-oxidants, for stamina, for quite some time. I believe the L-Arginine also helps to keep my blood oxygen at the 98%/99% level. I find your article interesting, however I notice no mention of quantities other than “a dietary supplement mix of Arginine and an antioxidant”. so what does one do? put it all in a pile then grab what you want? Specifics are not this article’s strong suit.

    Bob,

    Are you a doctor? If not, you are doing a great disservice to your readers by advocating the use of arginine and antioxitants to cure diseases. Just because it was shown that it may help some people, is no reason for you to recommend your readers use it. This may be considered practicing medicine without a license by some at the F.D.A., or some other government agencies.
    It takes years and years of research before any compound can be found to be, not only efficatious, but, most of all, safe to be used by large numbers of people.

    Do me a favor, will you, Buddy? Please stick to what you know something about … politics.

      Fortunately we still have freedom of the press and no government agency has ruled it a crime to pass along information… yet. And while Big Pharma, the AMA and their lackies at the FDA want to stifle information on anything that doesn’t line their pockets, so far they haven’t been able to completely. For that I’m thankful.

    Dick: I did not read in the acticle that anything cured diseases. It says the use “MAY HELP” improve exercise capability.

    Where do we get L-Arginine? What foods is it in? I did not read where you said that it cured anything – just that it may help. That is all anyone is allowed to say when it comes to natural supplements. Not so with the pharmas.

      Dear Lurline,
      L-Arginine helps your body to get optimum levels of nitric oxide, which is absolutely essential for total cardiovascular health. It helps with stamina and healthy blood pressure levels. Some foods that provide it are peanuts, walnuts, seeds (like pumpkin and squash) and eggs and, to a lesser extent, poultry. It can also be taken as a supplement.

    Arizona lawmakers have approved changes to the state’s controversial law cracking down on illegal immigrants. The changes were designed to answer charges made by protesters that it will lead to racial profiling by police. The original law stated police can conduct an immigration status check during any quote “lawful contact,” if they have reasonable suspicion a person is an illegal immigrant. It replaces “lawful contact” with “lawful stop, detention or arrest,” clarifying police may not stop people without cause.     My colestrol dropped from 365 to 201 and my blood pressure from 165 over 96 to 134 over 74…. Being active plus helpfuls is the answer, Just keep moving and cut carbs. the fruits and veggies are energy providers. Mothers and GNC or health stores, even drug store and grocery stores… try and get your weigh down I was lucky by being active to weigh 5 pounds more than when I was 17. Keep that blood flow going!
