Are You An Organ Donor?

March 20, 2012 by

If you’ve marked the donor box on your driver’s license you have done more than just give up your organs. You’ve given up your right to informed consent.

Doctors don’t have to tell you or your relatives what will happen to your body during an organ-harvest operation. Your rights are gone because you’re dead. Or are you?

The 1981 Uniform Determination of Death Act made brain death a legal form of death in all 50 States. But the examination doctors use to determine brain death doesn’t involve scanning for brain activity. The Wall Street Journal reports:

The exam for brain death is simple. A doctor splashes ice water in your ears (to look for shivering in the eyes), pokes your eyes with a cotton swab and checks for any gag reflex, among other rudimentary tests. It takes less time than a standard eye exam. Finally, in what’s called the apnea test, the ventilator is disconnected to see if you can breathe unassisted. If not, you are brain dead. (Some or all of the above tests are repeated hours later for confirmation.)

Here’s the weird part. If you fail the apnea test, your respirator is reconnected. You will begin to breathe again, your heart pumping blood, keeping the organs fresh. Doctors like to say that, at this point, the “person” has departed the body. You will now be called a BHC, or beating-heart cadaver.

Still, you will have more in common biologically with a living person than with a person whose heart has stopped. Your vital organs will function, you’ll maintain your body temperature, and your wounds will continue to heal. You can still get bedsores, have heart attacks and get fever from infections.

“I like my dead people cold, stiff, gray and not breathing,” says Dr. Michael A. DeVita of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. “The brain dead are warm, pink and breathing.”

Studies have shown that some patients determined by these tests to be brain dead were still showing signs of brain activity. In one study, 17 of 503 patients declared brain dead showed brain activity in an EEG.

Like the rest of conventional medicine, there is big money in organ transplantation. When you check the box to make yourself an organ donor, you sign away your humanity and your rights and make it possible for doctors to choose expediency and profit over compassion. Your organs can be harvested from you before your loved ones have a chance to ensure you are dead and that there’s no hope for recovery.

This is absolutely horrible! Everyone is going to die. Would you rather die quickly, with your organs removed, or slowly, with say three years of being poisoned, cut, and burned for a preventable disease? Shark or cancer? You chose. I’ll take the shark if I have a choice.

I am an organ donor. I ride a motorcycle. I don’t want my heart restarted if it has stopped for more than four minutes.

I have also concluded that once my heart, lungs, liver, or both kidneys are removed, I’m pretty much dead. I don’t want to be revived or survive if my head has become a hood ornament on a Dodge Ram. I am an organ donor to insure that I am dead.

I want to be cremated once the organs are donated. That makes sure that what is left is dead.

I’ll take Ramming the Dodge with my head for a quick if messy exit…but if you’ve seen
the condition of a sudden impact…there isn’t much left that isn’t mush. I would like to share my parts when I’m all done with them….but I’m hoping to wear them out a bit ,first.
It’s been my experience that you’re not done ‘tll He’s done with you….and that parts are parts….but I don’t cotton to anyone messin’ with my parts unless I’m supervising.

What most organ donors don’t realize is that, not only do you forfeit informed consent, in many states you are opening your wallet to have it picked clean. You MAY be dead according to the medical experts, but in the legal & financial worlds, you’re still on the hook for paying. All that expensive life support while they harvest your organs? You pay, not the recipient. They keep you alive for a few days to complete their harvesting? You pay…….even if you’re dead. Find out how it is in your home state. You can find out more here :

      Somehow that doesn’t surprise me.

You have been terribly misinformed. Once you become an organ donor the cost is picked up elsewhere. This is an old wives tale. What a wonderful gift to bestow on someone in need. Probably many are not aware even our tissue and organs are still transplantable in later life. Take a little time and talk with someone from your local donor group. A total unselfish gift. God gave us a body please give what you can.

Interesting. I thought an EEG was done to insure you were brain dead. I know that they need the organs from one that still has the blood flowing to insure they are good but I didn’t know they did these simple tests instead. My step-father was in a coma some years ago. The doctor was telling my mother that he’d never recover when he sat up and started talking with them. He lived another 20 years. I wonder now if the doctor would have decided he was brain dead …

How can you reverse this decision ?

    • ValDM

The first place to start with the removal procedure would be your local driver’s licensing office. When you go to renew, have them remove the donor icon from your license. When you have your new license in hand without the donor icon (make sure) your next step would be to call 1-877-275-5269 to be removed from the national registry.

I’ve known that for years. At least as long as I’ve been a “donor”. When I reach a condition where they can do that w/out my protesting, they’re welcome to the parts.

  • GregS

I’ve known this for quite awhile. I’ve NEVER checked that box, and I NEVER will!

Furthermore, I would NEVER accept a vital organ from a donor, no matter how badly I would need it, or how willing he/she was to donated it, because I am fully aware that the donor was KILLED to obtain that organ.

  • JimH

I’m a donor. If anything is worth while after I’m done abusing it they can have it.

  • Thinking About

I want be needing my organs in my next journey and I hope to help many. Did you know a persons shin can help about 75 recipients with skin grafts?

  • tribs

I am not an organ donor!! If I were it would be included in a separate document for my children only. This way, it does not show up on my driver’s license and only my children know!! This way it is private and not advertised to any medical or any other professionals. There are way too many that would see the donor part; bypassing anything else for the organs alone. The rate of donors has gone down in the past decade. I have a living will that covers how I want me and my body to be treated. Whether that is donating an organ, skin or bone marrow is totally up to my children.
