Apple Juice May Help Improve The Mood Of Alzheimer's Patients

June 18, 2010 by

Apple juice may help improve the mood of Alzheimer's patients Consuming apple juice on a daily basis can help individuals with moderate to severe Alzheimer’s disease reduce the psychotic symptoms that often accompany advanced cognitive decline, according to a study recently published in the American Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementias.

Due to the skyrocketing costs of Alzheimer’s care, lead author Ruth Remington and her colleagues set out to find an alternative, nutritional intervention that could help slow the progression or reduce the intensity of the symptoms related to the disease.

For the study, the investigators assigned a group of Alzheimer’s patients to drink a 4-ounce glass of apple juice every day for one month.

Using a behavioral barometer known as the Neuropsychiatric Inventory, the team found that the patients, as a whole, experienced a 27 percent improvement in the areas of anxiety, delusion and agitation. However, the patient’s caregivers reported no such improvement in their day-to-day abilities.

"The modest, but statistically significant, impact of apple juice on the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia in this study adds to the body of evidence supporting the usefulness of nutritional approaches… in delaying the onset and progression of Alzheimer’s disease," the authors wrote.

"As in prior studies with vitamin supplements, it indicates that nutritional supplementation can be effective even during the late stages of AD," they added.
