Apartment Residents Rescue Man In Fire

CHICAGO, Aug. 22 (UPI) — Firefighters say two residents of a burning Chicago apartment building dragged a critically burned man to safety after breaking down the door to his unit.

Rescuer Nick Salazar said he smelled smoke when he was awakened early Monday in the North Side apartment building by a banging on his door by another resident. The other man, who was not identified, led him to the first-floor unit of the burn victim.

The two men were able to break through the door and pull the 45-year-old occupant out of the apartment, where the fire apparently started.

“I grabbed him by the wrist and felt something wet,” Salazar told WGN-TV, Chicago. “It was his skin.”

Responding firefighters transported the burned man, said by residents to be a Chicago Transit Authority bus driver, to a burn unit at Loyola University Medical Center.

The victim suffered burns to 75 percent of his body, Battalion Chief Thomas Lally said.

Some other residents were treated on the scene for minor breathing problems, he said.
