Anti-abortion, Pro-choice Groups Blast Healthcare Bill

November 27, 2009 by

Anti-abortion, pro-choice groups blast healthcare billAmericans United for Life Action (AULA), a national anti-abortion group, has recently stated that it will vigorously fight the Senate healthcare bill, which was moved to debate by last Saturday’s vote.

The AULA’s CEO Charmaine Yoest stated that she considers the successful passage to be "a pro-abortion vote…because this bill provides for an unprecedented expansion of federally-funded abortion."

Yoest went on to say that the legislation will move the U.S. toward redefining abortion as a form of healthcare, and that it will fail to protect medical providers who object to performing procedures that violate their conscience.

The Stupak-Pitts Amendment to the healthcare bill stipulates that no funds appropriated by the legislation may be used to pay for an abortion or any health plan that includes coverage of an abortion, but it does allow the option to purchase, with the beneficiary’s private funds, supplemental insurance that would cover such a procedure.

Meanwhile, some pro-choice advocates, including Planned Parenthood, reject the healthcare bill because they feel it is a step back for women’s right to choose.

"In reality, no insurance plan is going to go through the painstaking process of setting up two separate plans—one with abortion services offered and one without—to cater to fewer than 20 percent of the exchange participants who are allowed to buy plans that include abortion services," said California Democratic Congresswoman Lois Capps in an article written for Politco.com.
