Amid Solyndra Failure, Chinese Solar Panels Were Bought For Fed Building

If you can’t beat them, let them win.

That appears to have been the attitude of American bureaucrats who deemed it acceptable to use stimulus funds acquired via the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to purchase Chinese solar panels for the Senator Paul Simon Federal Building in Carbondale, Ill.

In 2010, the contractor hired to install the panels questioned the Federal government as to whether it was even legal to purchase the Chinese panels with stimulus funding, but the bureaucrats dismissed the query, according to The Washington Times.

Significance of the transgression has heightened in the years since the installation of the panels with the highly publicized failure of taxpayer funded firms like Solyndra LLC and Abound Solar. Both firms were involved in the manufacture of solar panels similar to those purchased from China for the building.

Since the companies’ bankruptcy filings, government officials have repeatedly blamed failure of the taxpayer-subsidized green-energy experiments on unfair competition from China.

    figures,what b.s.
Obama and many others need to go this Nov,clean the scumbums out!

    • Warrior

Doesn’t matter which “team color” they wear, ALL PROGRESSIVES must go.

    • http://yahoo gator

is anyone surprised this has happened in illinois?

  • brett

not the least bit surprised. china is way ahead in green energy tech. it’s true we can not compete. wonder why?

    • Ted Crawford

We can assume there are several reasons, however it’s certain that chief among them would be the egregious regulatory policies of Lisa Jackson and the EPA. Perhaps a lessor known cause might be found in the fact that China currently holds 95% of the Earths known sources of Rare Earth Minerals, a vital componant of Solar Panels and many other electronic devices!
Therefore Obama, in another disingenuous use of his “Level Playing Field” rhetoric, mislead America about our real chance to compete with them in this field!

      • ernest

to; Ted Crawford maybe the free-trade deals had a lot to do with it ( do you think China pays the same wage & benifits we do plus all the other costs of doing things in america like lawsuits, goverment interferance, insurance & ect. ) then people wonder why we are in trouble, a bunch of real smart voters.

    • eddie47d

If our government had put as much effort in supporting Solyndra as the Chinese did in supporting their solar business we’d have American made panels on that building. The Republicans once supported Solyndra and delayed its progress which allowed China to sneak in and take over. Obama did get stuck holding the bag no thanks to the Republicans. The Republicans are now the party of ” I was once for it but now I’m against it”. Politics at its worst.

      • Craig

again it’s the republican’s fault eh.

      • http://yahoo gator

eddie, it was the obaministration that finalized the deal. giving money AWAY to a bankrupt corporation was a stroke of genius by the barryboys. i’d like to know how many of those taxpayer dollars got kicked back to them, $500,000,000 is HALF A BILLION TAXPAYER DOLLARS by the way!, thats alot of kickin.

      • http://yahoo gator

eddie, by the way ‘A STROKE OF GENIUS’ was a sarcastic remark. i figured i better spell it out for you.

      • http://personaliberty.com Travis

How could this possibly be the Republicans fault? Perhaps they knew that investing in this company would be financial suicide?

  • bwilly123

I’m sure if they had spent more for US made panels Fox and other news agencies would be screaming about that.

    • Butch

The fact that they feel they even have to waste money on this “green energy” BS at all, is the problem.

      • Craig

See this just wrong thinking again. The government needs to pay the lowest cost, but the government should not pump hundreds of millions to invest in companies. Sony had to lose a hundreds of millions on the Blu-ray over HD DVD and will not get it’s payoff by winning the war. It was not the Japanese government that had the investment. Solyndra needed to invest their own money at their own risk.

    • Ted Crawford

To spend excessive amounts of our financial resources, at a time when they are so limited and we have many, many other, much more vital needs, on what even the Scientists and Investors involved in that industry, admit is an INEFFICIENT technology, is by defination idiotic!

  • gaaak

They maybe couldn’t find ANY companies in America that build these panels. Are there any?

  • Dad

Obama owes the Chinese… at least they own him. Talk about sending jobs overseas on Obama’s watch.

    • Realist

Uhhh…NAFTA, GATT…started under Clinton and perpetuated by the rest. No one wants to bring jobs back to America. Only the service sector remains and Americans arent too keen on raising a family with a minimum wage job. You will have to tarriff the crap out of those companies that have moved oversees but the lobby on K street would buy off all the congress and Senate who may not yet be playing ball.

    • skippy

Hahahha Dad, you make me laugh. Yep, ‘out sourcing’ at it’s VERY BEST!!! well said sir!! :)

  • Realist

As many hoarders possible scooped up all Solyndra’s remaining inventory for a song.
Look it up on E-Bay…they are selling them by the pallats and making a strong profit.

  • Realist

Unless a new executive order has been published since May 2010, as a retired manager for a Government entity at Fort Hood, TX, we had to solicit with several US manufacturers with our plans and needs and then entertained bids. Only as a last resort could we go on a single bid or overseas for anyhing. (It is called Fed Bid and it is illegal to go overseas
as long as an American company gives a competitive bid.) But that was 2 years ago!

Solar panels are just groups of solar cells.
Solyndra didn’t make the solar cells but was dependent on China to supply them and China upped the price until their competitors were out of business.
Anyone stupid enough to invest that much money without a secure supply of raw materials should go out of business or getting government funding is the real goal.

  • s c

Oh, I see. It’s important for the White House Messiah to stroke the sensitive feelings of those in China. However, are we supposed to conclude that this latest example of galloping insanity means Obummer is living up to his oath of office? I was not aware that honoring “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” of the Chinese people could be found in the Constitution. Live and learn. Hmmmm, hmmmm, hmmmm!
It sure is amazing how things are constantly found in the Constitution. Next, I suppose someone will claim that the urgent need for Sharia Law in America will become a #1 goal of the Shecawger White House gangsta. It does seem to fit. Only in Amerika, and only in a utopian Amerika.

  • Viet Nam Vet 67-68

I bet the $500 Million blown on Solyndra would have been better spent on an American solar company that was operating and making money and could have put up a lot of Solar Panels for $500 Million Dollars. Viet Nam Vet 67-68

    • http://yahoo gator

10-4 VNV, lets hope we can fix it come november.

      THANKS. gator

  • http://asdgsagdjs Mikel Lewinski

Certainly, but we all need to realise that adding Solar in their home is an purchase which could raise the longer term worth of their house if / when they come to a decision to sell. With the environment the way it is going we cannot dismiss any product that provides free power at no cost to both the client and more notably the earth!
