Americans Increasingly Turning To Alternative Treatments
Recent statistics show that 38 percent of Americans turn to natural medicine and alternative treatments, while 12 percent of children have used such therapies. More and more people are experiencing the healing effects of spa treatments, acupuncture, massage, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin and mineral supplements, yoga, Tai Chi, meditation and ancient herbs and tinctures.
In fact, more than half of U.S. medical schools now teach courses in alternative medicine. And the current research budget for the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) is $121.5 million. This is 61 times the amount allotted in 1992 when the department was founded.
