American Hikers Released From Iranian Prison

American Hikers Released From Iranian Prison

Two American hikers who have been held in Iranian prison for more than two years were each released on $500,000 bail ($1 million total) Wednesday, according to reports.

The release ends a standoff between Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his rivals in the country’s judicial system. Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal were arrested after crossing an unmarked Iranian border two years ago. They were sentenced last month to eight years imprisonment in the country.

Ahmadinejad announced plans to release Bauer and Fattal last week, just ahead of his appearance before the U.N. General Assembly in New York. One judge had signed the paperwork Saturday, but Ahmadinejad left for that meeting in New York on Monday with the two Americans still behind bars, according to ABC NEWS.

The release followed a power struggle in Iran since Ahmadinejad’s announcement of a fast release. Iran’s judiciary, which is directly controlled by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, reminded the public that only the courts have the power to control the release’s timing.

Bauer and Fattal were released to Swiss and Oman officials, who also handled arranging the payments of the bail because of the United States’ economic sanctions on Iran.

It’s good to hear that they are out of Iran and on there way home

    • Bob G

No. They are morons and deserve to do prison time.

      • bob wire

A little harsh for being “suspected of” crossing an unmarked national boundary line in the “out back” with no legal representation and no evidence of spying devises or data.

It ended much as I thought it would early on. Eastern thinking,~exploit all opportunities of compromise for personal gain.

If I can see you! You owe me. They thrive on civil entanglement on any and all levels.

These kids are lucky, is could have been much worst.

        • mark

“Eastern thinking,~exploit all opportunities of compromise for personal gain” No, this is actually called capitalism, Bob. It’s the U.S. national religion.

        • wandamurline

Every other country in the world arrests you for entering their country illegalls….except for the US…here they give you welfare, free health care, free tuition etc. I heard that the million came from Saudio Arabia….I doubt that very much….I believe that the tax payers paid the bill…and if that is so…then these two imbeciles need to be put to work immediately with monthly payments back to We the People. We should not be paying for stupidity…however, we still have that in Congress so I guess it is a lose/lose for us.

          • http://?? Joe H.

I think I heard Oman! The kids were stupid to be hiking in a turbulent area like that anyway!!

  • Jim

Did you hear this guy say that he is praying for the political prisoners being held in America? DUH?? This answers why he was hiking along the Iran border. He IS a moron!!!

    • bob wire

In two years you can get a lot of programing my friend and might say anything.

These two were not hardened professionals but products of Sponge Bob and friends that seen adventure as fun.

    • DonS

Just 3 happy go lucky “hikers” near or across the Iranian border? Sure! When Shane Bauer spoke of “releasing political prisoners in America”, he added my doubts about their “hiking” claim. Finally, now just who really paid the $1 million, AND WHY?

There is far more to the story than has been reported by our “objective, interested in the truth” media.

    • Karolyn

I am sure there are many political prisoners being held in the US who do not belong in jail and are not being given a fair shake. Those suspicious of our government like you should certainly believe that is happening.

  • Free Mind

Nowadays we are all political prisoners. Why are hikers who can’t read a compass making headlines?

    • mark

Right there is no difference between living in an Iranian prison for two years and living today in America. They are exactly the same. This is why the Tea Party is such a joke.

      • http://naver samurai

Actually you, not the Tea Party, is the joke. FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

    • 45caliber

Why were they hiking in that area in the first place? That alone makes them stupid in my book.

  • Tom

We could eliminate our debt if we charged $500,000 per illegal that has come into the U.S.. Our administration wants us to pay them instead. What a difference is border security…..

    • eddie47d

There are people in this country who want to criminalize everyone also so if the shoe fits wear it. It was a political excuse for Ahmadinejad to gain points and here the left and right use border crossings for their political fist fights. What a shame how countries all over the world use and abuse these situations.

    • Christin

Great point, Tom… border security versus NO border security.

…Except in Mexico’s case it might be five pesos instead of $500,000!

Of course, we could show them how to get a ‘China Debt Connection’ and then charge them what the evil Iranian leader’s did.

The American captors in Iran did not knowingly cross into a country to LIVE and TAKE as the Mexicans do in ours.

Frankly, going on a ‘hike’ in hostile countries like Iran is just plain dumb, in the first place. If these three were ‘liberal minded’ thinking these countries are so great and they could just go walking and talking to the nice people… I think they got a rude awakening, I hope.

In any case I am glad they have gotten out and will be safe, but may need some de-programming.

    • Erik

Why can’t we hire an Iranian border patrol in our own country? I’m sure they would do a better job then we could, and besides it would be a great public relations ploy to bring our two countries into a better understanding of each other!

  • tsunami

There must be something about hiking that makes stupid.
On the otherhand perhaps the hiking stores offer an unlimited supply of stupid pills.

You read all the time where hikers fall off cliffs, trying to see over, hikers killed by grizzley bears, but running away and yelling,
hikers killed by exposure, improper clothing and supplies.
hikers lost and died as they had no compass or did not know how to read one.

These two clowns are just two more in a long list.

I wonder how much your Government spent in money and political capital to get these two back.

If it was up to me they would be geting their Old age pensions in jail.

    • bob wire

Such talk as the above coming from Tea Party activist is why the Tea Party will never be accepted and become the driving force of reform by the American people.

It’s sad too, there is so much good that could be have been accomplished.

The Tea Party quite simply has too many such people that react in unmeasured ways and display contemptuous civility like it was a virtue to aspire to.

Why not return to the GOP and finish destroying it?

      • CC

And…it’s a coincidence they were released yesterday.

      • http://none Bill Cook

How is the Tea Party involved in this?Berkly Libs are NOT in the Tea Party.Get real bob.

      • http://naver samurai

Are you smoking weed again? FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

    • mark

Yes but Thank God we all live in a country in which nothing is up to you.

  • William

My Question is : Who paid to get these two Young Morons out of Iran and What kind of Deal did The Alien President, Barack, ( Don’t even sound like an american Name ),make with that Country????

    • eddie47d

How would you like to be thrown in a foreign jail over a minor incident? How would you feel if you or a loved one were on vacation in another country and got in a traffic accident:lets say Mexico and had to spend time in one of their sordid jails. You better hope some excellent diplomacy will get your butt out for it is not easy. Iran used this as political leverage and nothing else so grandstand all you want with that “evil” Barrack.

    • mark

Don’t even sound like an American name.? Your racism is just so typical of this site.

      • 45caliber

Are you saying it IS an American name? I’ve never heard it before here – but I have when talking about Muslims.

        • eddie47d

If a Muslim is an American then it is an American name. Not too many parents name their kids Sven any more either so would all the Sven’s be un-American. Your going down hill fast Caliber with all those odd comments.

  • CP

I still wonder if these kids actually crossed the line, or if the line reached out and grabbed them. For sure it wouldn’t be the first time someone had been grabbed from where they were legally entitled to be and drug across an imaginary line on the ground to be accused of illegal entry and spying. North Korea, for one, used to be very good at this sort of thing until an actual, physical boundary was set up that can not be crossed “accidentally.”

  • Kim

Morons indeed ! and also those who support them..
Who in their right mind would undertake “sightseeing” near
Iran, North Korea..next we may hear of a similar act on the Afghanistan/Packston border…dumb azzes………..let them rot..

    • mark

let them rot. Ah yes, I can tell this is a Christian site. That sweet ambience of Christianity so present at all those lynchings in the South.

      • 45caliber

        mark:

You aren’t a Christian so how did you become an expert on them?

      • http://none Bill Cook

Mark should volunteer to take there place and save us the million.

      • http://?? Joe H.

        Mark,
what the heck would you know about those southern doings?? I can tell by the way you post that you are still dripping wet behind the earsand more than likely weren’t around to see desegregation come into being!! Oh, I know, you read it in a BOOK!!! Wow! Forgive me!!

      • http://naver samurai

You are no Christian, so stop with the pretending nonsense. Second, the ones that performed the lynchings were Christians? How do you know that? Cite a factusl source to back up that load of crap. If someone lynched another person, then they are not Christian. Tisk, tisk, tisk, such moronic thinking. FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

  • s c

It’s obvious from some of the above comments that stupidity is a religion and that we won’t soon run out of more ‘hikers’ (in other countries and/or on this website). OK, class, someone tell me what’s right or wrong about having border security that is at least as good as that found in Iran?
Can anyone tell me why we need to keep out certain types of people? Why do we allow some people in Washington to ignore America’s laws and keep their jobs?
Is there any difference between leaving your doors and windows open and expecting no one to come into your house without your permission? Did you know that we have laws on that topic? Now, think hard boys and girls.
There is a big test coming, and some of you may not ‘survive.’ Make your family proud, and show that you are capable of learning from your mistakes. Remember that the sixth grade is harder than the 5th.

    • mark

Can anyone tell me why we need to keep out “certain types” of people? I’m actually more concerned with the people who are already living here whose families have been citizens for generations. Many of them are a lot more frightening than the people who are trying to get in.

      • Karolyn

        Good one, Mark!

      • http://naver samurai

Why don’t you go to Mexico and figure it out for yourself. FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

  • CC

I saw a clip of their comments after deplaning. “…release the political prisoners in our country and abroad.” We are holding political prisoners? My PC dictionary still has the term ENEMY COMBATENT in it. Who are the political prisoners in American jails? Some tea party granny I extremist, maybe?

    • 45caliber

      CC:

Reminds me of a line in a movie I saw once. A prisoner claimed to be a political prisoner. He was arrested during a bank robbery – which he said was a political protest.

  • Dale

First of all this was a “bribe” which everyone is calling “bail” to get these two guys released. Bail is paid to get out of jail while awaiting trial, and the bail is to assure that they will show up for trial. These two were already convicted and sentenced to prison, so it was a “bribe” to get out of jail. Plain and simple, a bribe was paid to Iran to get these two out of jail (a half million was paid as “bail” to get the girl out a couple of months ago, but she had not yet been tried and convicted, so it was bail which was going to be forfeited because she had no intention of returning for a trial. It was blackmail paid to the Iranian government. If there was a power struggle in Iran, it was about how to split up the million dollars.

My belief is the “we the people” (the government of the USA) paid it. If we did, then they were either spies or we should not have paid.

If I am wrong and the families paid, then it is their money, and I have no problem with it, but they should also reimburse “we the people” for the money we spent helping them get out, and the cost of transporting them through the Swiss Embassy back to the USA. Our citizens have no business hiking along the Iranian border with Iraq. None.

    • 45caliber

I would like to know who really did pay it because it has always been firm that the US would not pay kidnapping costs or bribes for American citizens. It insured that there would be fewer Americans taken for that reason. Now we do. Who made that decision and where did the money come from?

  • No fool

The Iranians got their $1 million in extortion money (likely US tax payers money). The two morons will never return there. It’s a done deal. Now we’re all just waiting for the Israelis to level Iran.

    • mark

Yes the levelling of Iran probably is the next Israeli move. They are very good at murder.

      • 45caliber

And the Iranians are even better at it. Are you trying to say that people have no right to resist if someone is trying to kill them?

      • http://naver samurai

Anti-Israel and pro-muslim. I’ll bet the Taliban, Al Queda, the Muslim Brotherhood, and Hamas really like you. Knock off the nonsense and post some facts. FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

  • Mirage

Any American’s hiking near the Iranian border, who happen to get arrested for illegally crossing that border, shouldn’t be rescued. Ditto for all the world’s dangerous places that seem to attrack thrill seekers. Being that stupid, and getting caught, is an example that natural selection still exists … let nature take its course.
Unfortunately there isn’t a pill to correct stupid, and if you mess with a bull, sometimes you get the horns!
Well, now that the hikers have been saved and kissed by their mammas, they can ALL write their auto-biographies, make the talk show circuit, and collect at least $100K for being stupid, or perhaps, entrepreneurs.
Justice might be, a bill from Uncle Sam for saving them.

  • Jack Kinch(1uncle)

A stupid, childish thing to do. Don’t waste taxes to free them.

  • Joe Berger

These “hikers” look Jewish and have jewish names.
Can you really blame the Iranians for being suspicous given the hostility between these two groups.
Were they gathering information (spying) for America or Israel.???
HIKING sounds like a pretty lame excuse to me.
What would Israel do if they caught a couple of Iranians “hikig” inside their country????

  • Karolyn

Why do so many feel that they have to make a conspiracy case out of a simple story. This is not the first time people have stupidly ventured where they shouldn’t and won’t be the last, end of story. I am very happy for them. I’m sure 2 years in an Iranian prison is no piece of cake.

  • wisdom

Haven’t been following the story. Seems any Americans hiking near Iran have to be CIA. What’s up with the uniform reference to stupid kids???

  • Freedom

I didn’t read all the replies so I hope I’m not repeating someone else reply: 1.) who paid for the $1,000,000.00 for there release? 2.) One of the hikers said we should get ALL Americans(or captives) being held captive out!! AGAIN, who is paying for this?? The TAXPAYERS?? If they were STUPID enough to be hiking in Turkey near the Iranian border then they get what they deserve!! What’s wrong with hiking in the GOOD OLE U.S.A.!!??

  • http://gunner689 gunner689

What kind of moron says ” Hey, I’ve got a good idea. Let’s go hiking around in the Middle East ! ” and what kind of morons follow him ?

  • Trevor Simmonds

If these were one of your children would you still make the same comments about them or would you like i would thank GOD for there safe return?????

  • les johnson

Yes,YES…Lets hold all the illegals for $500.000 Ransom for the Mexican govt.& families to pay to get’em back. Psychologically flip the situation in peoples minds…peoples minds are like jello anyway now-days in all flavors and weaknesses to be molded.
