America In Danger Of Downward Mobile Status

Due to a growing number of Americans opting to forgo advanced education degrees because of skyrocketing college costs and diminishing job markets, some education experts say the Nation is in danger of becoming a place where downward mobility is the social norm.

Andreas Schleicher, special adviser on education at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), said in a recent BBC interview that there is a growing trend of younger Americans being less educated than their parents. At the current rate, he said, the United States will soon be the only major economy on Earth where most members of younger generations are less educated than their parents.

This could lead to the Nation falling behind significantly in its ability to compete in an international economy.

“It’s something of great significance because much of today’s economic power of the United States rests on a very high degree of adult skills — and that is now at risk,” Schleicher said. “These skills are the engine of the US economy and the engine is stuttering.”

The education expert’s remarks come on the heels of OECD reports that show the balance of global economic dominance shifting heavily in the next half century. The report shows the United States dropping from 23 percent of total global gross domestic product to just 16 percent by the year 2060. Conversely, China is expected to make gains from 17 percent to 28 percent in the same timeframe.

And the wisdom displayed in this country today compared to about 235 years ago is more astounding. Can you say “death spiral”?

    • Steve E

They were much smarter and had more common sense in the days of old than they are now.

That is why a constitutional convention is so dangerous. Just imagine what kind of constitution would come out from a people who don’t even know that this is a republic and not a democracy.

or from those who don’t understand that it is not 1776, or 1787 or 1789……
and don’t understand what the words meant then or now??????

      Warrior –
True, which is doubly dismaying because knowledge is expanding so fast…but…not wisdom. This has set up a situation prone to madness and chaos, I think.
How many people could tell you the primary theme of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes? The Hebrews classed them as Wisdom literature. Did you ever wonder about why two of the three “knowing” or “informational” manifestations of the Spirit are Word of Knowledge and Word of Wisdom? But, in the listing of manifestations in I Corinthians 12:7 – 11 Wisdom comes first, like it’s primary to God. Ever wonder why?
Well, the answer seems to be that if you have a pound of knowledge there may be a thousand ways to apply that knowledge – but…only one wise way. Every other way may be quite unwise, foolish or even catastrophic in application.
God can help a person sort out which way is that way of wisdom and how to proceed. Of course, who thinks they really need God for anything anymore, anyway? Silly old ideas…Right? Yah, right, like man’s boundless self appraisal of his own omniscience and abilities could ever bring him to a set of desirable conditions when we have run out our string.

It occurs to me that our kids backing away from being formally educated in the commonly known way may be a good thing… especially if they take a more contemplative and wise approach. BUT, I doubt it, because to do so would require that they first conclude they’ve got to acknowledge God as first and include Him in the transactions.
“Wisdom is the Principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all your getting get understanding.” – Proverbs 4: 7
There’s some evidence that that would be genetically influenced. So before that could happen there would probably have to be a lot of dieing. But then, it has already been shown quite conclusively that those who have the type of optimism and hopeful attitude that believing God’s Word engenders are far more resourceful, resilient and adversity resistant than God rejecters – ‘course that’s an unwise decision on the face of it.

For many young people, college is not the right choice. Other than technical professions like engineer, programmer, doctor, architect, and lawyer, most people leave college dumber and more messed up than when they first arrived because they were indoctrinated instead of being taught how to think for themselves. For many people a tech school or an internship might be better. People can make good money as a plumber, electrician, mechanic, etc. They don’t start their careers in serious debt and can be much better off than if they had gone to college. Many 20 year olds with only a highschool education can make over $100,000 working in the oil fields and they don’t need debt to do it. Most liberal arts degrees are worse than useless and are definitely not worth the debt that most students leave college with. College isn’t the end-all. All avenues of learning should be considered including self-education. If you know how to think for yourself, you don’t need a teacher to be continually learning and improving yourself.

      • Kinetic1

        Mike,
Listen to what you and others are saying here. Your first inclination is to ask
“How many people could tell you the primary theme of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes?”
Well I have to ask you, how many bio-chemical labs care about your knowledge of religious texts?
        ChristyK responds,
“… most people leave college dumber and more messed up than when they first arrived because they were indoctrinated instead of being taught how to think for themselves.”
And then there’s Republican politician Rick Santorum opining,
“”President Obama once said he wants everybody in America to go to college.” “What a snob.”

These attitudes, combined with the Christian Right’s attempts to marginalize science and the Conservative drive to cut spending in education and privatize anything and everything related, do nothing but weaken our nation’s schools. Why would you expect our youth to attend college when their parents, many of them on this very site say,
“College degrees have become practically worthless”!
Communists plan to “Use them (schools) as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda.”
It’s all part of an elitist plan, “the ‘dumbing down’ of America.”

With so much contempt for our educators and the educational system being spread about, why should this story come as a surprise?

      • Mike in MI

        Kinetic1 -
Gee, is that what I said? Did I say that the search for knowledge and investigation of this beautiful universe we’ve been blessed to live in is wrong? Did I say that the use of knowledge is inherently corrupt, degrading and despicable in the extreme because it has perverted the world, cultures and people that use it?
Or, is that YOUR perspective on what I wrote because I included a scriptural perspective on the USE of knowledge acceptable to you because it is available to scientific scrutiny?
Perhaps I should have also posted that knowledge, whether from a scientific source or a spiritual source, is only that: knowledge. Bare knowledge carries no value judgments on it – unless it can be proven faulty.
For instance, somebody conceived and designed the axe, right? That’s knowledge.
Wisdom? That’s what you do with the tool. You can use it to cleave wood or pull a Lizzy Borden with it.
The same is true of most knowledge. Also, why WISDOM is the PRINCIPAL thing.

The only other question that follows is where does one get his/her wisdom? The source that inspires one to cleave wood or split hairs on Mom and Dad?

Like it or not, believe it or not, you live in a spiritual world – and neither one of them wants (or will permit) you to do experiments to perceive them with your paltry five senses. Both demand you to first “believe”. God asks that you believe His Word. The other wants you to believe anything else.

It’s up to you and the heart of your mind’s desire to learn.

Bob, you sent out a The Tea Party.net page today. I was in the tea party in 2006-07,and after a few years became disgusted with its members being Hi-jacked by the gop. I am a life long Republican and a supporter of Reagan. But after what Bush did to this country under his own words Neo-Conservative party I,m now a Constitutionist. Both parties are cowards and they proved that obeying Paulson, that we will have martial Law and troops on the streets after the 2007 crash.Every and I use the word loosely politician is voting to take this country down to 3th world status in one way or another[except Paul]. Now, The Tea Party, if it is legite or packed with NWO people or masons has to re-organize to remove both parties from office. America is organized not to have freeloothers as politicians, just citizens going to dc to serve 2 terms and go the ^&#@ home. A true Tea Party or different org. has to introduce new candidates for evey office in this countryor they should stop blowing their steam. The Tea Party has to have a 5 million man an women march on dc to stop all wars and bring ALL US Troops home from ALL Countries around the globe. Pentagon budget should be cut to operate asa defense only, and all Offense duties and spending END. Cut Budget in HALF, America,s DC is BK. We have enough defense weapons to defend our shore. I don,t care what some veterans say who are Brainwashed or brain dead that they are boogey men waiting 4 us or the Cold War is still going on. The Cold War was all make believe anyways, thats why they shot Kennedy, because he was going to tell the truth. The DEM and GOP are in bed together, and are against everything this country is about and stands for. Communist must leave Washinton, ALL of them. We need a new party and it should be called The American First Party, all are welcome to join as long as you love FREEDOM and LIBERTY. Dan

Is this post supposed to be an example of how our educational system is failing?

  • RivahMitch

“Downward Mobility” for “education experts” could be a good thing for America as a whole.Their “expertise” hasn’t improved our education any and is unlikely to do better for our society.

    • Kim

I agree! I have a 29 year old that graduated with masters degree a few years back and a younger daughter fixing to graduate. Tuition has more than doubled. The debt they owe is really the debt spiral too

      • Mike in MI

“Downward Mobility ” is merely added evidence that Obama is succeeding in his efforts to expand the “middle class” to which the “poor” seek admission. If the “middle class” is defined by the amount of wealth one is able to build and maintain by work, frugality and service to one’s community – well, voila – before long all but the government (party) workers and elite leaders will qualify as “middle class”. So, !quick! get an Obama pin and any available federal position (But first, like, “touch your toes for us”).
The lowest class will inhabit the gulags and CCC (that’s Conservative Concentration Camp) corps.
Just another step toward his “Transformation of America”.

  • Right Brain Thinker

Yes, Sam, you point out a disturbing trend. Of course, it is going exactly in the direction that the plutocracy and corporate oligarchy want it to go. No one will need a higher education in the corporate feudal stat that they are preparing us for. The continued upward redistribution of the incomes and wealth of the 99% will make it even harder for the country to support education at all levels, not just the highest.

So the !% will continue to push for a “dumber” populace and the corporate oligarchs will continue to send jobs overseas because it is better for “the bottom line” to do so, and the economy will “stutter”. Of course, that matters not to to the greedy rich and the corporate oligarchs—they don’t participate all that much in our economy anyway, and hide much of their wealth and profits beyond the reach of our tax collectors.

    Sic Semper Patriae

    • Paul Wells

Gee, and here I thought it was all the dumbed down ne’er-do-wells clamoring for more free phones, WIC, welfare of every kind. These are the individuals who can’t string a coherent sentence together, even if their lives depended on it. But no, it’s the corporate oligarchy, yep, that’s what it is, alright. What a load of crap!

      • Vicki

What he also forgot to point out is that corporations have not the power to do these things. Only by the force of government can an oligarchy exist. Thus it is as it was in the begining and articulated by many, including George Washington and Ronald Reagan.

(Big) Government is not the solution.
        (Big) Government is the problem

      • GALT

        Still missing it, huh, Vicki?

The government must be serving someone, after all they are only whores…..very highly
paid ones…….so maybe they are the “courtesans”…….but whores none the less…..

And they don’t appear to be serving you or anyone else in the bottom 80% and the
19% above that, are only “accidental beneficiaries”………

So you need to add an adjective before the noun……as in “cxxxxxxxd government” IS
        your problem.

Of course,I don’t want to put words in your mouth……..

      • Deerinwater

Well, it is true . only an accurate descriptive “language” will serve us and get us to where we “want and attempt” to go. Notions of “Big” needs to be expanded upon if we expect to be clearly understood.

Government is only a “tool” ~ it can be used poorly or used well.

We can drive a nail with a hammer or hit our thumb. Little nail, small hammer, big nail, large hammer and watch out for collateral damage.

Government has the potential for much good and bad.

    • http://gravatar.com/bychoosing WTS/JAY

      Absolutely right on point, RBT!!!

  • eddie47d

Like all of America especially Corporate CEOs they demand exhorbant salaries and even bigger benefits. They overprice themselves and the company. The same within the halls of college education where high salaries are demand or they won’t teach. Who pays for that? Those seeking an education and the parents. Its like any affordable product and if its reasonable more people will buy into it. People will buy a $35,000 car but not so much that $55,000 BMW. Our colleges have become greedy and some like the Phoenix program have been accused of ponzi schemes. They have become profit oriented not educational oriented where THEY make buckets of money while producing uneducated workers.

  • GALT

There is no danger, people’s choices are simply reflecting reality…….and the
main one is…….those pieces of paper are not worth the cost to obtain them……..or
haven’t you been paying attention, Sam ……..( and the recent instruction that has been offered to you………so that you may correctly evaluate the “actual valuation” of the
paper you claim to hold and the “experience” you have had thus far. )

    Those that can ………DO!

and that goes for billionaires too………

so the only thing that matters………if you are going to choose something that “requires” a piece of paper……..is to be real sure there is a job on the other side……..and that you
    don’t get over charged………

Other than that….you might want to take to heart the examples of Bill Gates or better
yet ” Frank Abegnale “……..in understanding that “actual intelligence and ability” is far more important than having a “piece of paper” that says “you might have them”…….

    “Do you concur?”

    • http://gravatar.com/bychoosing WTS/JAY

Well, i dare say; “hell must have frozen over”, because i concur! Head spinning…hyper-vantilating…and in support, a short paraphrase; College degrees have become practically worthless while the expense has increased at an astounding rate. Statistics are skewed regarding employment and is something to consider.

  • AZ-Ike

Of course younger Americans are less educated than their parents (no matter how much formal education they participate in). That is the goal of the ‘dumbing down’ of America.

  • alpha-lemming

Don’t know if they’re symptoms, root causes, or something in between but you can’t discount pop-culture effects such as “The Bart Simpson Syndrome”… whose T-shirt in his early years infamously proclaimed “Underachiever & proud of it”…. or gangsta/thug life which is openly hostile to all education… (that’s a white thang y’know).

  • AZ-Ike

Communist infiltration, indoctrination and disinformation have been extremely effective in America and worldwide.

    List of Communist goals
The following is the list of Communist goals contained in The Naked Communist:[3]

(The list of communist goals contained in the book was read into the Congressional Record by U.S. Congressman Albert S. Herlong, Jr. of Florida, on January 10, 1963.[3] )

    ……
    11. Promote the U.N. as the only hope for mankind. If its charter is rewritten, demand that it be set up as a one-world government with its own independent armed forces.
    ……
    14. Continue giving Russia access to the U.S. Patent Office.
    15. Capture one or both of the political parties in the United States.
    16. Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic American institutions by claiming their activities violate civil rights.

    17. GET CONTROL OF THE SCHOOLS. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers’ associations. Put the party line in textbooks.
    18. Gain control of all student newspapers. (Obama-president of Harvard Law Review-articles SEALED.)
    19. Use student riots to foment public protests against programs or organizations which are under Communist attack. (2011-12 – They are now accomplishing same with class warfare and OWS protests.)
    20. INFILTRATE THE PRESS. Get control of book-review assignments, editorial writing, policymaking positions.
    21. Gain CONTROL of KEY POSITIONS in radio, TV, and motion pictures.
    22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression.
    ……
    24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them “censorship” and a violation of free speech and free press.
    25. BREAK DOWN CULTURAL STANDARDS OF MORALITY by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV.
    26. PRESENT HOMOSEXUALITY, degeneracy and promiscuity AS “NORMAL, NATURAL, HEALTHY.”

    27. Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with “social” religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize the need for intellectual maturity which does not need a “religious crutch.” (Secularism – Moral Relativism)
    28. ELIMINAGTE PRAYER OR ANY PHASE OF RELIGIOUS EXPRESSION in the schools on the ground that it violates the principle of “separation of church and state.”

    29. DISCREDIT THE AMERICAN CONSTITUTION by calling it inadequate, old-fashioned, out of step with modern needs, a hindrance to cooperation between nations on a worldwide basis.
    30. Discredit the American Founding Fathers. Present them as selfish aristocrats who had no concern for the “common man.”
    ……
    31. BELITTLE ALL FORMS OF AMERICAN CULTURE and discourage the teaching of American history on the ground that it was only a minor part of the “big picture.” Give more emphasis to Russian history since the Communists took over.
    32. Support any socialist movement to give CENTRTALIZED CONTROL over any part of the CULTURE—EDUCATION, S0CIAL AGENCIES, WELFARE PROGRAMS, mental health clinics, etc.
    ……
    35. Discredit and eventually dismantle the FBI.
    36. Infiltrate and gain control of more unions.
    37. Infiltrate and gain control of big business.

    38. TRANSFER some of the POWERS OF ARREST powers of arrest FROM POLICE TO SOCIAL AGENCIES (DHS, EPA, ETC.). Treat all behavioral problems as psychiatric disorders which no one but psychiatrists can understand or treat.
    39. Dominate the psychiatric profession and use mental health laws as a means of gaining coercive control over those who oppose Communist goals. (psychiatrics/psychology used to damage the family structure.)

    40. DISCREDIT THE FAMILY as an institution. Encourage promiscuity, masturbation and easy divorce.
    41. Emphasize the need to RAISE CHILDREN AWAY FROM THE NEGATIVE INFLUENCE OF PARENTS.
    42. Attribute prejudices, mental blocks and retarding of children to suppressive influence of parents.
    43. Create the impression that violence and insurrection are legitimate aspects of the American tradition; that STUDENDS AND SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS should rise up and use “united force” to solve economic, political or social problems.

    46. Repeal the Connally reservation so the United States cannot prevent the World Court from seizing jurisdiction over domestic problems. Give the World Court jurisdiction over nations and individuals alike.

    • Right Brain Thinker

And exactly how does a list extracted from a book written in 1958 by an FBI agent have any bearing on the topic under discussion here? Or are you just grinding an old tired ax because you feel some need to do so?

How come you left 14 of the “goals” off the list? Here are some of them and they’re no more meaningless 54 years after they were written than the ones you included.

      7. Grant recognition of Red China. Admission of Red China to the U.N.
      8. Set up East and West Germany as separate states in spite of Khrushchev’s promise in 1955 to settle the German question by free elections under supervision of the U.N.
      9. Prolong the conferences to ban atomic tests because the United States has agreed to suspend tests as long as negotiations are in progress.
      10. Allow all Soviet satellites individual representation in the U.N.
      34. Eliminate the House Committee on Un-American Activities.

  • Deerinwater

America has been in “downward mobility” since the mid 70′s for Christ sakes ~ I guess people that have “came of age” in the big middle of this downturn have a different perspective then I.

We had our problems in 74″, inflation and fuel shortages but nothing compared to today smogusboard of corrupted dysfunctional systems .

74″ was the earlier years of lobby activities, they were just getting started into the destruct our government. At one time we once had a government lead by people that heard the calling to public service , now we have the best government money can buy!

  • USN retired

Education, knowledge and wisdom are often used synonymously but have very different meanings. Wisdom is used to educate our young with the most favorable subjects of knowledge. Unfortunately wisdom seem to be a past trait that has died off several generations ago. We often want lawyers and doctors when all we have is ditch-diggers. We need to educate our children by determining what they want to do and what they are capable of doing. D+ students don’t make good A+ doctors. Knowledge is a fabulous commodity if within the right individuals capabilities. Good truck drivers do not always make good astronauts. We need to rediscover the apprenticeship programs, trade schools and well taught high school so our children and young adults have an idea what is available and meet their interest. We have a lot of college graduates on the streets with knowledge that is inadequate or not of interest to the individual. We can’t all be doctors lawyers, CEO’s or politicians. Somebody has to able to do the work and get paid for it and not lay around on welfare. Mine was the military which I enjoyed and did well in.
