Allergies threaten overweight kids more, researchers say

Allergies threaten overweight kids more, researchers say The list of reasons why parents may want to turn off the computer and send their kids outdoors has just grown longer, as a new study found obese youngsters are at a greater risk for developing allergies than their leaner peers.

The research conducted by experts from the National Institutes of Health examined data on more than 4,000 children aged 2 to 19 and analyzed their allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) or antibody levels developed in response to a range of indoor, outdoor and food allergens.

Overweight children, they found, were about 26 percent more likely to have high IgE levels and therefore develop allergies than those with normal weight.

Dr. Linda Birnbaum, NIEHS director, says the possible link between obesity and allergies should provide additional motivation for parents and teachers to undertake the challenge of reducing childhood obesity.

There are many natural approaches to losing weight, including physical exercise and a diet low in refined sugars and rich in fish, fresh fruit and vegetables as well as nutritional supplements with vitamin D that has been shown to help prevent obesity.

Kids who have allergies probably have a challenged immune system. If they’re overweight, the odds are high that their parents let them load up on sweets and junk food [don't be surprised if the government uses this to claim that parents are guilty of child abuse].
Get those kids outside. Throw away the TV sets. If you can find an MD who’s interested in keeping kids healthy, make that advice work for you. Parents have been allowed to slide on this issue for far too long. Quality fruit, good veggies, fresh air, exercise and common sense keep kids healthy. Be a parent. At least act like you care.

No where, from Doctors, health people or our Congress has anyone covered the Dangers of High Fructose Corn Syrup which responsible for dangerous epidemic of obesity and diabetes. Our government has been bought and sold by ADM’s corn sweeterner operation with 41.8 billion dollars in subsidies, which by the way could be send to Medicare instead of making the our nation sick. Diabetes coste the USA $92 billion in medical costs and $40 billon in indirect costs. High Fructose Corn Syrup is in almost every food sold in this country. Just how many cups of Surgar (HI Test) can one absorb a day and not become sick? Being a retired Chef, I vounteer to teach cooking of healthy foods, read labels, even down to make one own breakfast sausage with the Cancer Awareness people. We are the fattest people on earth thank to Coke, Pepsi and AFM (Archer Daniels Midland) and our government. Hope people take heed. Chef Robert Morrow, Member of Personal and Private Chef Assoc.
