AKC: Beagles Spike In Popularity

NEW YORK (UPI) — The New York-based American Kennel Club said Labrador retrievers topped its list of the most popular U.S. breeds, followed by German shepherds and beagles.

The AKC said Labs and German shepherds also topped the list last year, while beagles rose from fourth to third this year and golden retrievers moved up to fourth from fifth place.

Last year’s third most popular breed, Yorkshire terriers, moved down to fifth place.

“While the Labrador retriever has proven once again to be a family favorite, this year clearly belongs to the beagle,” AKC spokeswoman Lisa Peterson said. “The beagle’s merry personality combined with his love of outdoor activities make him such a wonderful family pet that I wouldn’t be surprised to see this spunky breed sniff his way to the top of the list next year.”

Rounding out the top 10 this year were bulldogs, boxers, poodles, dachshunds and rottweilers.
