Afghan Reporter’s Death Raises Questions

KABUL, Afghanistan, Aug. 1 (UPI) — The BBC is seeking an inquiry into the killing of one of its reporters in Afghanistan last week.

Ahmed Omed Khpulwak, 25, of the broadcaster’s Pashto language service, was among the dead when a TV and radio station was attacked in the town of Tarin Kowt in Uruzgan province Thursday.

Reports conflict on who killed him and the BBC has asked NATO’s International Security Assistance Force to investigate.

Heavy fighting broke out around the town’s market after three suicide bombings. Residents said both sides used machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles.

The Taliban said they attacked the town but did kill the reporter. A local news agency said he may have been killed by U.S. troops.

Khpulwak’s brother said he received two text messages: “I am hiding. Death has come,” and then, “Pray for me if I die.”
