As the deadline for filing income tax returns approaches, an organization dedicated to promoting a fairer tax system has said the present tax law confuses taxpayers and damages the economy.
According to Ken Hoagland, national communications director of FairTax.org, taxpayers nationwide become victims of the complex and "indecipherable" rules and regulations each year resulting in millions of dollars spent on tax expert services.
However, the impact on the economy is far greater, he suggests.
"American job growth has all but disappeared, [yet] we continue to tax every hiring decision by requiring employers to pay half of Social Security and Medicare taxes," he wrote in a statement, adding, "Our tax system drives American jobs offshore and undermines American competitiveness."
To remedy the situation, FairTax.org proposes a shift in federal taxation from earnings to consumption and giving the middle class significant relief.
It also blasts the "billion dollar a year, recession-proof lobbying business in Washington" that pushes for special interests loopholes as well as the "industry" of advocates, scholars and specialized publications that has grown around them.
FairTax.org is a grassroots campaign to win a progressive national retail sales tax to replace the income tax system.
