Accused Conn. Killer Says He’s Not Evil

NEW HAVEN, Conn., Aug. 1 (UPI) — Accused Connecticut home-invasion killer Joshua Komisarjevsky is objecting to harsh attacks from the man whose wife and daughters were slain.

In a motion filed in a New Haven court Friday and unsealed Monday, Komisarjevsky says comments made in interviews by Dr. William Petit calling him “evil” and an “animal” are part of “an ongoing public relations campaign” that threatens his chance of a fair trial, The Hartford Courant reports.

“Komisarjevsky is a damaged human being [rather than the embodiment of evil] and has, in fact, displayed remorse,” his motion asserts.

Komisarjevsky, 30, is charged with torturing and killing Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her daughters, Hayley and Michaela, during an invasion robbery of their Cheshire home on July 23, 2007. William Petit was badly beaten but survived.

Steven Hayes was convicted last year and sentenced to death. Komisarjevsky, who also could face execution, goes on trial in September.

Defense attorneys say Komisarjevsky accepts responsibility, and “execution would not advance the ends of justice.”

“All Josh desires in terms of his case is a sentence of incarceration for the remainder of his natural life in a maximum-security prison, the best he can hope for notwithstanding the lack of intent,” the motion states.
