‘A sugar-coated Satan sandwich’: Washington Democrats react to the debt deal

In announcing that a bipartisan deal had been reached to both raise the debt limit and reduce the national deficit, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) acknowledged that, because the deal was unlikely to please every member of both parties, the deal would desperately need votes on both sides of the aisle. He quoted the late President Lyndon Johnson: “There are no problems we cannot solve together, and very few that we can solve by ourselves.”

What quickly became clear after the deal’s announcement, though, was that perhaps Reid had underestimated Congressional members’ skepticism of the deal, especially in his own party.

“We all may not be able to support it, or none [of] us may be able to support it,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said, according to The Washington Post. Later she added, “I look forward to reviewing the legislation with my caucus to see what level of support we can provide.”

“This deal trades people’s livelihoods for the votes of a few unappeasable right-wing radicals, and I will not support it,” said Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.), co-chairman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, according to POLITICO. “The Democratic Party, no less than the Republican Party, is at a very serious crossroads at this moment. This deal weakens the Democratic Party as badly as it weakens the country.”

But while many Democrats in Washington have been critical of the debt limit deal, Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.), the chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, has given perhaps the most colorful assessment, calling the deal a “sugar-coated Satan sandwich,” according to an interview on MSNBC’s Roll Call.

“What you see is antithetical to everything the religions of the world teach: take care of the poor, take care of the aged,” Cleaver added. “Look at the phone calls I’ve gotten. They are seven-to-one in favor of a balanced deal, and also preserving Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security. And I’m concerned about this because we don’t know the details. And until we see the details, we are going to be extremely non-committed.”

It’s unfortunate that we are still stuck with this extreme leftist Dirty Harry Reid for at least 5 ½ more years. Hopefully next year we can at least win back control of the senate, and thus fire Dirty Harry as majority leader. And of course I have reasons to suspect that Dirty Harry Reid’s re-election 9 months ago was rigged, and that his supporters stole the election from Sharon Angle. ….. “There ought to be a law. If it saves one life, it’s worth it!!” says the mentality of do-gooders, liberals and progressives. LOL!! If government catered to all of these morons, we’d have no freedom to decide which personal risks to take or not take, and it would soon be illegal to get out of bed in the morning!! Why won’t these same morons instead advocate Voter ID laws, or call for enforcement of existing laws against voter fraud or tampering with the polls?? Well, to all these do-gooder morons, I say: “There ought to be a new voting law. If it means one less vote for the leftwing socialist Democrap Party, it’s worth it!!”

—“What you see is antithetical to everything the religions of the world teach: take care of the poor, take care of the aged,” Cleaver added. “Look at the phone calls I’ve gotten”—

      I ask this:

To go as we are will produce a catastophic failure of the current system, or do we make informed decisions to preserve the system for the long term for we have reached this point now.

Not all can be saved, not all should be or need to be saved. Its amazing how fast they get a job when the freebies dry up. Its jobs,
      always has been:

      Jobs jobs jobs jobs.

“This deal trades people’s livelihoods for the votes of a few unappeasable right-wing radicals, and I will not support it,” said Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.)

I wonder what he means by “people’s livelihoods”? Hmmm…Could he possibly mean that there are free-born American citizens that have actually opted to live their lives by taking from the fruits of others to subsist? Are there actually people out there that cannot understand that they are free to make a choice, but not guaranteed an outcome?

Gosh, I thought this was the land of opportunity. When did this become the land of “don’t worry about it, we’ll raise taxes on the rich and take care of you. No really, we have the IRS, they are very good at collecting money to pay for rent, health care, crack rocks and you will not have to worry. We’re from the govt, we are here to help.”

Geepers, there’s a new breed of ‘Christian’ in Congress (he does admit to being a ‘Christian,’ doesn’t he?). His view will go down like ice cream in the media, while the same remark made by a conservative would be seen as psychotic or in need of an investigation.
Score one point for hypocrisy. While the basic issue is a little more complex than meets the eye [deficit/budget], Cleaver probably doesn’t know it, but he told the truth, and at the same time he’s a willing participant in the destruction of America.
Like it or not, Mr. Cleaver, this legislation has OBUMMER’s name all over it. Whether it passed or not, he OWNS it, Mr. Cleaver. And since you two are ‘on the same side,’ that distinction will NEVER go away.
So will anything change? Or, can we look forward to more bailouts, jobs that get talked about but NOT created, will we be in foreign wars across the world and will America become just another forgotten episode in government theory?
Mr. Cleaver, you had a chance to make a difference, and you opted for rhetoric over substance. For my money, you and every progressive who ever lived was worthless in America. Was it really that hard to move to another country?

Wow – Really? “We all may not be able to support it, or none [of] us may be able to support it,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said, according to The Washington Post. Later she added, “I look forward to reviewing the legislation with my caucus to see what level of support we can provide.”

Old Nancy girl is finally reading things before she signs it? Now, this is flip-flop politics if I ever saw it! This is the same political POS that said “We have to sign it to know what’s in it!” The Left-coast has jumped over the cliff and is trying to drag the rest of the Nation down with them! Can we just eject California from the Union and get it over with? I know, I know, some might say – “Why doesn’t your State ceceed?” If only my State could, more than 70% would support cecession today. I know I do! These types of politicians are an embarrassment to the US!

      Alan,
      Almost every expert agrees that this bill is a win for Republicans with only minor concessions for Democrats, but here you are attacking Pelosi with the same old out of context line. Here, let me educate you a bit;
““You’ve heard about the controversies within the bill, the process about the bill, one or the other. But I don’t know if you have heard that it is legislation for the future, not just about health care for America, but about a healthier America, where preventive care is not something that you have to pay a deductible for or out of pocket. Prevention, prevention, prevention—it’s about diet, not diabetes. It’s going to be very, very exciting.

“But we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it, away from the fog of the controversy.”

In context it makes a lot of sense. As with almost everything President Obama has tried to pass since he took office this bill was mired in Republican BS. Lie after lie, exaggeration upon exaggeration coming from the conservative talking heads making it almost impossible for the average American to get a clear view of what the actual bill would do. It has become true for almost every bill that has come up in the last 2 years that, until it is passed and implemented we will not know exactly what we have. It’s sad when partisan posturing reaches the point where the leader of the Republicans in the Senate says that “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.” That’s the kind of mentality that creates this level of controversy and it is the sort of politicking that will ruin this country.

        kinetic,
Are you sure? what about the fact that a group of 12 takes away the rights of the rest to debate or discuss the cuts that these twelve come up with? This group of twelve has the power to demand a yes or no vote as soon as they present the cuts to them! Totally unconstitutional!! Judge Napalonitano said this and even a small group of your loonie libbies said the very same thing!! The very first time they try this tactic, we will be right back to square one as a rep or congressperson will challenge it in court as it cuts their authority!

    “Right-wing radicals”= Hate Speech….

    • Stan Smith

      Libtard Radicals= Hate Speech…..

      • Kinetic1

        Stan,
Listen to yourself. “Libtards”. Is that supposed to help make a point? Do you expect anyone to listen to or respect your opinion when you resort to childish name calling? This goes for both sides, enough of the juvenile insults. If you have a point make it. If it has any value it will stand on it’s own and may even give your “opponent” reason to think. Keep throwing around insulting names and one must question the value of everything else you have to say.

        • Stan Smith

So What Kinetic! When a Libtard makes a statement right wing = Hate speech so I give a libtard a dose of his own medicine! I see you attack right wingers and Independents when a Libtard makes a juvenile insults and they respond to the radical libtards by giving them their own medicine! I don’t see you attacking your fellow Libtard pete with his juvenile insults! Sorry to break it to you I’m not a right winger/repube! Just a independent! When a Libtard attack with his commie/socialist insult views I will attack a libtard troll I made the libtard troll run with his tail between his legs!

  • http://deleted Claire

This hate crap is why the U.S. is in such a bind. It is disgusting on both sides of the aisle. I am fed up with it all.

    • http://?? Joe H.

      Claire,
I agree partly, but it IS very understandable. People are watching the things they have worked so hard for all their life go down the drain. they are watching the very food their children are eating being taken away. While Nobummer should be concentrating on the budget and bringing more jobs to the US, as well as keeping the ones we have already he doesn’t offer anything but insults and threats to both houses! what does he concentrate on? A fiftieth birthday party!!! Where is his plan on PAPER? THIS is supposed to be what he is supposed to do!!
