A Benjamin Franklin Resolution

December 29, 2011 by

As we approach the beginning of another New Year, it’s common practice for many of us to make New Year’s resolutions. Unfortunately, we often break them before the first day of the New Year is done.

Instead of making one you know will be impossible to keep, how about this one from Benjamin Franklin?

In the 1738 Poor Richard’s Almanack (writing under his alias Richard Saunders), Franklin wrote:

Each year one vicious habit rooted out,
In time might make the worst Man good throughout.

Here’s wishing you a healthy, prosperous and one-bad-habit-less New Year!

I make the same resolution every year. I will not make another resolution. That is one that I can always keep.

I may have an idea or insight that might be able to arouse a liberal out of the muck and mire that must occur from reading or listening to the liberal hate filled dribble I occasionally put myself thru just to see what kind of malarkey stands for reason on the other side or reality! Well, I’m always disapointed needless to say.

I dare say I’m still one of those who has hope?(the last time I checked the deffintions still the same. Hope that the liberal hate filled retorick will lose its pazazz(spell check)something about hate filled blame game to them. for thats all it is a game of blame (whose got the ball? where should I direct it today?who who who although it mite seem they want to take over for woodsy the owl? Its still just a game and people just want to play all day play play play. No one wants to do any work. (Fact check) and decipher? no no no play play pl

Anonymous American quit drinking the liberal kool aid and take off your socialist sun glasses.
Public welfare has to be cut back , we can no longer keep people that cant or will not work. They expect to have a place to live, health insurance, food stamp debit card, monthly check, cell phones, free meals at school three times a day, clothing allowances and free gas for their autos.Women and their husbands, boyfriends, live in buddies bilk the tax payer year after year with no end in sight. With some it’s passed on from one generation to the next generation it has to end.
They have made this their job!!!! This is the group that broke the social security fund thanks to L.B.J and brought down the housing market thanks to Barney Frank and Chris Dodd.

Have a Happy and Prosperous New Year Mr. Livingston and all of the other commenters on the site. May the good Lord bless you and keep you safe throughout the New Year.

As a long-time fiscal conservative/ social libertarian, I’m always saddened to read the emails from polarized haters. Based on the contents of my bulging Inbox, more lie-filled hate-mail comes from the GOP side than from the Dem side. Just sayin’….

So I hope the New Year brings us more thoughtful discussion of complicated issues and much less knee-jerk hate-speech.

  • LowlyWise

Amen, ditto, and me too to Greg Brown!

  • Wil

I resolve not to make any resolutions. It’s one I can usually keep…

  • s c

I hereby resolve never to call myself a White House ‘Savior,’ demand that a would-be follower worship me, live for the next bribe from a lobbyist, pretend that I’m related to Queen Nancy Pelosi and expect to fly on an Air Force jet (with family along) and have access to booze, and I further resolve that no one should look at me as though I am self-anointed so I can make stupid people seem even more stupid so I can feed my ever-growing ego.
