The War On Drugs Claims Another Victim

Plant drugs on a school kid and turn a drug-sniffing dog loose. What could go wrong?
In Brazil, Ind., during a drug awareness event at the local courthouse, police wanted to demonstrate a K-9 unit’s effectiveness at finding even traces of “illegal substances.” Unfortunately, despite the fact that the drill was performed “under exclusive control and supervision of members of the court and law enforcement,” things didn’t go as planned.
Police had a 5th grader hold a small amount of marijuana and then turned their K-9 unit loose to find the hidden drugs. The K-9 unit bit the 11-year-old on the leg, causing puncture wounds that had to be treated at the local hospital.
“It was an unfortunate accident,” said Brazil Police Chief Clint McQueen to the Brazil Times. “Wish it hadn’t happened like that but it did. We are trying to evaluate (the incident) to make sure nothing like this happens again.”
Of course, police blamed the kid. What did he do wrong, besides submit to authoritarian figures as he’s being trained to do in the public indoctrination center that passes for a school? He moved his legs as the dog approached.
It seems a lot of “unfortunate accident[s]” occur when police and their war on drugs are around. Like when SWAT teams kick in doors in the middle of the night and fire a fusillade of bullets at residents jolted from their slumber. Or when they flashbang the wrong house and hold innocent children at gunpoint. Or when they shoot peoples’ fenced dogs. Or any of the myriad other unfortunate encounters people have endured at the hands of “peace officers.” And always, when these events end badly, it’s never the LEOs (legally entitled to oppress) who are held at fault.
The K-9 unit has been temporarily taken out of service, McQueen said. But not quarantined or executed, as would have happened had it been owned by a citizen.
Remember there are double standards when it comes to interactions with uniformed LEOs. Under the imprimatur of the state, they can plant drugs on school kids, let their dogs bite innocents, shoot unfortunates and/or beat them senseless or taser them to death without reprisal.
But let a citizen push back at the totalitarian behavior and, well…
