POINCIANA, Fla., (UPI) – An elementary school teacher in Florida who she said she and her father were terminally ill has admitted she lied so she could skip class.
Ashley Barker, a first grade teacher at Laurel Elementary School in Polk County, kept up the story that she and her father were sick and dying for about a year before she finally admitted that she was lying, WFTV-TV, Orlando, reported Thursday.
Polk County school district officials didn’t say how many school days Barker missed, but her termination letter said she sent the school principal 120 letters in the course of a year saying she was either at the hospital or the doctor’s office.
Barker is fighting her termination and has scheduled a formal hearing in front of a judge.
