Clothing For The Surveillance State

In an apparent sign of our surveillance state times, one New York-based artist is designing the fashion-forward equivalent of tinfoil hats.
Artist Adam Harvey has created a line of high-tech clothing that helps wearers avoid the prying eyes of facial-recognition technology and unmanned aerial vehicles. Another of his garments has pockets that prohibit a wearer’s cellphone from being tracked. Harvey also has created an “XX-Shirt” which he claims is made of material to protect the heart in the event you are forced to walk through an X-ray machine.
“Military technology is coming home from the war,” Harvey told Slate. “These pieces are designed to live with it, to cope with it–to live in a world where surveillance is happening all the time.”
One example of Harvey’s attempt to use fashion to thwart the surveillance state the anti-drone hoodie and anti-drone scarf he has designed. The garments designed to thwart thermal imaging, a technology used widely by UAVs.
Harvey has worked in the past to come up with ways to obscure facial features and hairstyles so that they are not picked up by facial recognition cameras, which are becoming more common in cities throughout the world.
