As details about the Republican and Democratic negotiations over the impending fiscal cliff continue to come out, some prominent conservatives are saying that they will shun the GOP if Republican lawmakers sign a deal that raises taxes.

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, it became evident that many of the self-proclaimed fiscal conservatives are far more willing to raise taxes than they allowed supporters to believe. Led by neocon standard-bearer Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.), at least six top Republicans renounced previous pledges to never raise taxes. Some of those lawmakers, like Senator Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), Senator-elect Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) and Representative Peter King (R-N.Y.), actually restated their no-tax promises as recently as last month while campaigning for re-election.

Now, as other Republicans consider bending to Democratic wishes with regard to taxes since members of neither party are willing to consider real reforms in the way of social welfare and military spending, some conservative backers are upset.

Conservative activist and Media Research Center founder Brent Bozell says he will steer donors away from the GOP if Republican lawmakers agree to raise taxes. In a letter to Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, Bozell urged the Party to do everything in its power to avoid new taxes.

From the letter: “Reince, it pains me to say this, but if the Republican Party breaks its word to the American people and goes along with President Obama with tax increases, it will have betrayed conservatives for the final time.

“I will make it my mission to ensure that every conservative donor to the Republican Party that I have worked with for the last three decades — and there are many and they have given tens of millions to Republican causes — gives not one penny more to the Republican Party or any member of Congress that votes for tax increases.”

    Reagan Admin gave the word that 30% tax rate drop over three years would balance the budget in seven years and that the 10/10/5 rate drops that congress approved would balance the budget in thirteen years. Then Herbert Walker Bush signed into law a tax increase after pledging “no new taxes.” Then Clinton signed into law a tax increase and then after admitting he thought he raised tax rates on us working-stiffs “too much” he never even suggest fixing it. It is no wonder that it took until 1999 to balance the budget. Then came the snafus in our economy, Enron, Madoff, Housing finance committee forcing Sub-prime lending on Fanny and Freddie further forcing private lenders to foolishly follow suite or risk going out of business making government lenders practically the only game in town with Wall Street betting on the losers behind closed doors and two decade+ long wars that probably shouldn’t have lasted more a year, all of this thanks to voting the same morons into office time and again. I.E. Polosies’ “You have to hurry up and pass this Bill (ObamaCare) so you can see what’s in it.” and all the idiots who voted for it sight unseen. Carries’ “Well, I didn’t think he was really gonna do it” after voting to let Bush declare war against Iraq), Carries’ lie “The memory of spending Christmas in Cambodia above the 38th Parallel when I was in Viet Nam is seared in my mind” and Carries’ lie “They weren’t really MY war medals I threw over the fence at the White House lawn.” after previously admitting many times that they WERE his medals. Not to mention the many other idiots and liars who have been voted into office again, again and again. And the most common denominator of all, the moronic idiots who keep voting these same people into office. It is no wonder they all think they are above the law, our constitution and even the voters’ them selves. Do everyone a favor the next you vote, THINK!

    As long as we do not return to the conservative times we experienced during the Bush years, spending was up, two wars which did not get paid for and to offset the extra spending taxes was cut. A plan for disaster which came to pass. What will be required to pay the Bush spending and debt will require taxes to return to pre Bush rates and cut out lots of loop holes. Do we have a Congress in place to govern, time will tell, in a letter from my representative I don’t think he is up to the task, pitiful. To think we are paying wages to this bunch to mess this country up, what a shame.

    It is becoming increasingly difficult for those with truly conservative/constitutional values to work with Republicans. The reason for this is that the Republicans continue to demonstrate that they are but one face of a coin called “politician”. They are more interested in furthering a career than furthering the “general welfare”.
    We have to start electing truly conservative minded people at the local and state levels. This is the only pathway open to us to obtain a footing on the national political landscape.
    It is hard work but must be done, otherwise we are all just another group of loudmouths with an agenda and no plan.

The problem I see is that the extremists in the GOP have dragged the party over to a position that does not work “towards promoting the general welfare” but instead promotes the welfare of the plutocracy and the corporations. And the “career” is more and more keeping one eye always on the lobbying job that awaits them after their term—–where they can get really rich.

      The GOP at the local and state level is gerrymandering to lock in their control, passing voter suppression laws, and being led around by the nose by groups like ALEC. All allegedly in the name of conservative values but really anti-conservative in that they will destroy the country if they succeed. Things may have to get worse before they get better The “loudmouths” have been coopted into thinking they are fighting the good fight but they are not. The founders of the Tea Party have come to that realization—let’s hope enough others do the same to save the GOP and return it to the hands of those with the “truly conservative/constitutional values”.

        Both parties work towards the same end, and that; through the “Hegelian Dialectic Process”. I’m sure you’re familiar with such?         I most certainly would not say that—-you have interwoven among your more “frenzied” (for want of a better word) comments a theme that we can agree on, that nearly ALL of them are SOB’s that have sold out. We differ mainly on who has sold out more—right or left, and exactly how they have sold out.

        I have recommended “Winner Take All Politics” to all on PLD—-it indicts ALL of them—left and right. Another book by a liberal, “The Death of the Liberal Class”, indicts the Democrats for selling out and becoming like the Republicans that led the “sell out” to the plutocracy and corporate oligarchs. Good reads both.

        I favor the Socratic dialectic rather than the Hegelian myself, as should be evident by my many comments on various threads of PLD. I focus not on the “process”, but on the search for “rationality and truth”. We can go both ways in our “dialectics” and still come to some agreement on certain truths about the parties in the end.

        I don’t want to jeopardize our new “relationship”, but I must point out that the Socratic dialectic has led to many “truths” that I have pointed out on the threads and been attacked over, often by you. We unfortunately have had very little functioning “process” on this site—the “craziness” seems to smother it.

        Again, it was good talking to what I hope is the “real” Jay.

      True grass-roots movements begin at home ( and I mean ACTUALLY at home, with the family), and grow from there. I’ve said in other discussions that we all need to become more familiar and more involved with our local, county, and state governments, in order to make ANY inroads. The communist party in the U.S. has been doing this for decades (don’t scoff,………it’s true) and we have A LOT of catching up to do.

    Taxation is theft. Taxes are what is wrong with this country. No taxation ensures a truly limited government. Now, the beast is out of control and starving for more meals to be Larger and LARGER. All while we stand to lose life, liberty and property just to keep alive the false oppressed ego that “you can’t do it on your own”. This great nation was founded on the understanding that we all deserve whatever we are willing to work for and that burdening our fellow man with our troubles is in hinderance of their liberty. Philanthropy is compassion. Taxation is theft.

        Fox News’ bias isn’t greater than any of the ‘lib’ media… it only seems that way when you compare it to the bulk of the media that have leaned liberal for a long long time.

        When you have a lot of media that lean liberal, and a small portion that lean conservative, when you compare any of them against the media as a whole, of course the media that lean conservative, is going to stick out more.

        Name calling with “Faux News” and other insults are pointless. Every media outlet has its own bias and perspective, and having that diversity in opinion is _extremely_ important.

        It lets us get a more rounded picture of the issues at hand. Gives us something to compare different viewpoints against.

        All throwing out “Faux News” does, along with the ‘greater bias’ accusations do to accomplish, is label the one throwing those terms out there, as one who doesn’t need to be taken seriously, as they are a sign, that he himself, doesn’t take his own knowledge seriously in the first place.

        Disagree with Fox News all you want to. Challenge their positions and opinions. Take on the issues you disagree with, debate your position. We need that.

        We have more than enough stupid name callers who are unable to grow up and be rational adults.

    We need to replace the Supreme Court and Congress, with good honest men in office. (that should keep the president in check) then we have a chance.

    Follow the money trail and it will lead you to the truth. (Which congress men own property off shore?)

    Make it law that NO government official EVER profits in ANY way from there time in office, then you can watch the rats run from the ship. There is a reason for term limits so if someone tries to change it…… follow the money trail.

    We already have gotten the largest tax increase of any civilization know to man. Welcome Obama care.
    The Budget?
    Could some one tell me when borrowing money ever got someone out of debt? If one of your kids can’t control their budget do you keep giving them money or do you tell them to stop spending money? The US is should not think it’s the watchdog of the world.
    Stop the insane wars and get the kids home. Save money, save lives, foreign and domestic.

Rather than dedicate itself to the preservation of traditional ideas and the ideals expressed in the Declaration and Constitution, it has sold out to the plutocracy and the corporations, who have perverted the concepts of free markets, capitalism, and representative government in their greedy pursuit of riches. And now the GOP is tearing itself apart from within—real smart.

      The GOP endorses Corporatism and the anything goes policies on Wall Street and in the marketplace. So we end up with these up and down cycles and financial bubbles bursting. Even the Democrats are following that pattern and its more about instant gratification within both parties. They both allow Insider Trading to flourish as an entitlement to their prowess. They both allow the Elite bankers to control the election cycles and the whole economy. Some Conservatives allowed Citizens United and ALEC to actually write statehouse laws and pass legislation through intense lobbying efforts.Yes everyone seems to do it but are they any better?

        I would also recommend ” The Engineering of Consent”, published in 1955 -written by Bernays. It details the propaganda campaign that led to a US-engineered coup in Guatemala. This reference book became the Tavistock blueprint to overthrow any country that would not align with their long term goal of a one-world-government.

    Gee, are you just figuring that out? The GOP hasn’t been a conservative party for years. These days, at best, they are left leaning moderates. Most, I’d say, are liberals. Look at the presidential candidates they’ve been fielding lately. Liberals, mostly. The last consevative was Reagan. It’s a major reason I quit the GOP several years ago and became an Independent. You call McCain a neocon. I’m not sure what a neocon is. I interpret that term as a new conservative. McCain is no kind of conservative. He’s a liberal. If he pledges not to raise taxes then I expect him to do just the opposite and support tax increases. It’s what liberals do. They can’t be trusted I hope he keeps his word and retires when his current term ends. Hopefully, whoever runs for his seat will be a true conservative. I suspect that’s why Sarah Palin bought a house in Arizona. I think, and hope, she plans on replacing him.

      Never happen! Any tax increase will be accompanied by an increase in spending, probably the five times you indicate spending should be cut. All liberals do is tax, tax, tax and spend, spend, spend. Usually, what they spend money on are programs they know will not work. If they even think a program will work, they won’t spend a single penny on it. I’ve come to the conclusion that those morons in Washington have some idiot rule that requires them to waste our tax money.

        Although, Clinton is a smart guy, unlike Obama. He saw the writing on the wall and even agreed to a 40% reduction in capital gains tax. Because that is what works, not raising taxes.

        So, here you are talking all high and mighty about how we ought to raise taxes and that Clinton had a surplus when it was lowering taxes and spending less that made Clinton look so good

        The roaring economy during the Clinton years would have happened whether there were high taxes or not. The fact that the Tech bubble burst would have happened whether there were high taxes or not.There was a surplus because of the massive sales within the Tech market which brought in billions in more tax revenue. The USA was in an abnormal buying frenzy which eventually came to a halt. The reckless gambling on Wall Street made them billions but also caused eventual ruin. Not much different than in 2007-08.

      Didn’t Reagan make a deal similar to that with the democratic Congress? They increased taxes on the middle class but then the dems reneged on their agreement and spent more. You can’t trust these leftists. It’s like dealing with spoiled children, they’ll say anything to get their way, then they’re going to do what they want when given the opportunity.

        Remember, it was a GOP-controlled Congress that produced and PASSED that budget, which Clinton signed.

        Why hasn’t obama gotten a single budget passed since taking office (even in his first two years with a total lock on congress)?? It’s because he’s so far left, that even many in his own party (not the Communist party, I’m referring to the Democrats here) are often unwilling to give him what he wants. Compared to obama, Clinton was a moderate, and people on both sides of the aisle were willing to work with him, because HE was willing to work with THEM. Obama presents a radical leftist agenda, and then whines and points his finger when others refuse to dance for him like little puppets.

        Frankly, any talk about raising taxes or cutting spending, should be a non-starter until there is a duly-passed budget to work from.

        Any negotiation on the fiscal issues of the Federal government is merely entertainment until that happens.

        How can you negotiate and plan future finances, if you don’t even have a budget to work from as a starting point?

        And, how is it, that we’ve gone 4 years without a budget, and haven’t had a shutdown yet? The government should have been shut down the first time we didn’t have a budget, until we had one passed.

        Government has been shut down for less, before.

        No negotiation, compromise, or agreement, on anything, until we have a budget to start with.

      I like beating a dead horse but I told all of you that Romney could not win this election because of his past and Ron Paul would have destroyed him with the TRUTH. I have been reading your blogs across the board and everything you wish you had but will not get Ron Paul had in his Plan to turn this Coutry around. His only flaw and a big one was the Muslims they need to be Destroyed but as far as this Country is concerned he would have gotten rid of 5 Government Agencies, I.R.S. with Flat TAX, Balanced the Budget, kept Medicair and Social Security and Medicaid in tact and Audited the Federal Reserve and slowly closed it down our biggest problem. He was going to cut spending (Abominations $1.6 Trillion over spending bill for 2013) by $1 Trillion and he probably would have cut out the Abomination Quantum Easement Stupidity 3 of $40 Billion a month for bad Real Estate Loans this Lunatic Abomination ordered when he entered the Semi White House in 2008 further burdening the Middle Class TAX PAYERS with even more DEBT.
